    Abstract [en]

In July 2006 archaeologists from the University of Bristol and Atkins Heritage embarked oil a contemporary archaeology project with a difference. We 'excavated' ail old (1991) Ford Transit van, used by archaeologists and later by works and maintenance teams at the Ironbridge Museum The object: to see what can be learnt from a very particular, common and characteristic type of contemporary place; to establish what archaeologists and archaeology can contribute to understanding the way society, and specifically we as archaeologists, use and inhabit these places; and to challenge and critique archaeologies of the contemporary past. In this report we describe our excavation and situate it within a wider debate about research practice in contemporary archaeology.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this essay is to assess the concept of Lifecycle analysis (LCA) usually used in environmental impact assessments as a tool to study archaeological remains over time, to test the concept on the 17th warship Vasa and to study the potential of the concept in heritage management. The lifecycle approach, even called biography or life-history in the literature, shows the interaction between the, in this case, the Vasa ship, and the surrounding society prevail over time, acquiring different meanings depending of a multitude of context and stakeholders in different time periods since the conception of the ship to today's ship at a museum. It also shows that Vasa had and have many possible biographies. The concept earlier used on i.e. monuments, is well applicable on ships not visible in the landscape and displays other aspects not visible in a traditional archaeological study. The use of the concept can both enrich the archaeological interpretation, the discipline it self and the heritage management.

Tradition och praxis i högre utbildning: Tolv ämnesdidaktiska studier2010Collection (editor) (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Arkeologi i förorten: Berättelser från norra Botkyrka2008Collection (editor) (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Half-carvels are vessels on which the lowest part of the hull is built with overlapping strakes of planking, referred to as clinker

construction, and the uppermost parts of the hull are constructed with the planks laid side by side, in the carvel fashion. These

mixed planking constructions occurred in the 16th century (as far as we know), but became very common in later centuries.

The aim of this article is to highlight the existence of different versions of clinker construction, and to discuss some reasons

behind the selection of the technique.

    Abstract [en]

In 2009 the well-preserved wreck of a 17th-century merchant ship was found at a depth of 50 m in the Stockholm Archipelago. On the top of the ship's rudder is a carved lion, inspiring the working name ‘Lion Wreck’. The state of preservation provides a rare opportunity to study the conditions on board a typical 17th-century Dutch merchant ship trading in the Baltic. The aim of this text is to describe and summarize the first thorough survey of the site, carried out in spring 2010.

'The Ghost Ship': An Intact Fluyt from c.1650 in the Middle of the Baltic Sea2012In: International Journal of Nautical Archaeology, ISSN 1057-2414, E-ISSN 1095-9270, Vol. 41, no 2, p. 350-361Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

We report an exceptionally well preserved 17th-century shipwreck in the Baltic Sea. The investigation of the intact 3-dimensional hull at 130 m depth in the cold dark water has demanded new methods of documentation. Field investigation of ‘The Ghost Ship’ has been done in co-operation with a nautical survey company, combining archaeological skills with advanced technology and filming for a television documentary. The discovery offers detailed knowledge about Dutch shipbuilding and the construction of fluyts. We also believe that study of the social organisation aboard this small trading ship can give insights into the mentality and ideology of the period.

Discovering Harbours?: Reflection on the State and Development of Landing Site Studies in the Baltic Sea Region2009In: Journal of Maritime Archaeology, ISSN 1557-2285, E-ISSN 1557-2293, Vol. 4, no 2, p. 149-163Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

For the study and understanding of the structure and use of the ancient landscape and the maritime aspects of society, landing sites are one of the most sought after and discussed antiquities in the cultural landscape. Methodologically, in locating the places for landing, looking at their context, such as the prehistoric landscape, has been given a high priority throughout the history of research and landing sites are presumed to have existed in the vicinity of several material and non-material indicators of maritime presence. However, as the category of landing sites and their nature have not been properly defined, such indiscriminate designation based purely on circumstantial evidence poses serious problems. This paper evaluates research into landing sites in the Baltic Sea region, scrutinising terminological and methodological approaches used and suggests a way forward.
