Abstract [en]
The aim of this study is to get a deeper understanding regarding the construction and portrayal of the concept cultural diversity in Swedish media during the Almedalsveckan 2008 and 2012.
The study aims to find and categorize different discourses regarding the concept of cultural diversity, and more specifically how they have changed from 2008 to 2012. The empirical base consists of seven Swedish nationwide newspapers. The theoretical framework consists of a combination of social constructivism, postcolonial theory and discourse. The method chosen for the study is discourse analysis, which also will be used as a base for the theoretical framework since the study is focusing on discourses.
My main founding is three discourses that are prominent in the media regarding cultural diversity. The first one is promoting for cultural diversity, the second one discusses integration policy and the third one is promoting for xenophobic thoughts. I found that the postcolonial concept of “us” and “them” is prominent in the overall medial discourse on cultural diversity.
The study highlights and demonstrates a part of a larger and more complex reality. It helps to illuminate the power relations, conceptions and discourses that exist in Swedish newspapers regarding cultural diversity.
