Abstract [sv]
Abstract [en]
Agreements of trade are signed in order to stimulate development and growth according to trade theory. The aim of this thesis is to study whether the countries that signed the trade agreements and founded the South-American customs union Mercosur have experienced growth. The thesis also analyzes and discusses trade creation and trade diversion, institutional structures of which the financial sector is one, knowledge transfer and innovations, as well as the balance between production sectors.
The study finds that the Mercosur-countries have benefited from the customs union in the transfer of knowledge and the formation of new industries. During the first years Mercosur did not have a great trade creation effect but rather a trade diversion effect. Ten years after the customs union came into force a strong trade creation effect towards countries outside of the union is observable. The regression results show statistical significance in the agricultural and the manufacturing sector which contribute to growth; however, none of the other variables show significance.
The regression-analysis is based on panel data on all the Latin-American countries on the continent except Guyana and Surinam. Further there is made a difference in the regression as to if the country belongs to Mercosur or not and whether it is the time before or after the implementation of the union, in order to study the progress of growth for the Mercosur-countries.
