Abstract [en]
This study examines the relationship between institutional factors and the number of reported money laundering cases in European countries. Focusing on three key variables – corruption levels (CPI), financial market efficiency, and AML risk (Basel AML Index) – the research analyzes data from 19 European nations to identify patterns and possible explanations for variations in money laundering reports. Using quantitative secondary data and descriptive statistics, the study compares countries with varying degrees of institutional strength. The findings indicate that countries with higher levels of corruption and weaker financial institutions tend to report fewer money laundering cases, which may reflect deficiencies in detection and reporting mechanisms. The study concludes that institutional quality plays a significant role in how effectively money laundering is identified and addressed across Europe.
