Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Purpose: The study aims to explore cultural differences and similarities between Sweden and Germany that are present in the workplace from the perspective of expatriate managers. The study also aims to understand how cultural aspects shape expatriate managers' leadership and adaptation in the new host country.

Theory: The theoretical framework on which this study is based is The Globe Studies of 62 societies. Scientific articles in culture, leadership, cultural intelligence and emotional intelligence have been used to gain a better understanding of expatriation.

Method: The study has used a qualitative research method and conducted semi-structured interviews. The selection is purposive where the participants were chosen for their knowledge, can represent the subject and provide the research with valuable insight. The participants are both Swedish expatriates and German expatriates working in multinational organizations.

Conclusion: The study has found that expatriates have experienced more cultural differences than similarities between Sweden and Germany. The differences stem from these noticeable cultural phenomena within these two countries; consensus (Sweden) and the culture of efficiency (Germany). The shaping of leadership is based on the individual's (1) personal characteristics and (2) acceptance of other cultures. The study's expatriate managers have taken these two aspects as their starting point during their time in the host country.
