Abstract [en]

This text takes its point of departure in two teaching situations where students formulated racist views. The teaching took place in an international master’s program. During the seminar and lecture where this happened, we discussed the relative tolerance of the Muslim Ottoman Empire during the 16th and 17th centuries. Two students objected and claimed that Islam has never represented anything other but oppression and “filth”. My reactions and my own inability to deal with the situation are presented. The text discusses how the importance of emotional reactions in seminar teaching is central and that teachers’ ability to treat politically incorrect and emotional reactions has become of increasing importance in recent decades. Different student reactions in teaching contexts with students of different nationalities can be understood in the emotional collective communities where the students are situated. The text concludes with a discussion of Michalinos Zembyla’s concepts of strategic empathy and reconciliatory perspective. Although this constitutes a difficult-to-navigate pedagogical methodology, the concepts can function as tools to tackle difficult and emotionally invested seminar situations.
