This research presents local objections in the villages Hyby and Börringe located in southern Sweden. The people in the villages are concerned about new Muslim burial sites at their cemeteries. The purpose of this study is to find out and present the arguments in favor of- and against the new burial sites in the villages. The purpose is also to see if the opinions and arguments can be understood in terms of the phenomenon “othering”. The method of choice is a qualitative document analysis of Swedish newspaper articles and letters to the editor regarding the objections of the Muslim burial sites. The articles and letters present arguments and opinions in favor of the new Muslim burial sites but also against them. In conclusion, the most recurring opinions against a new Muslim burial site revolves around the villages being of Christian heritages and people living there being Christians. Some things that also recur is environment problems, traffic and a risk of contaminated water and big crowds of people during the funerals. The vicars and the Swedish church have also been blamed for choosing the location of the new Muslim burial sites poorly. The people in the villages creates “othering” by applying stereotypes and creating boundaries between “us” (the people in the villages) and “them” (Muslims) and by showing how different the Muslims are from the people in the villages. The articles and letters to the editors doesn’t present any data about how many people the events involve or how many people who takes a stand in favor of- or against the new Muslim burial sites. There isn’t much research done in this area before this article but if a similar study was to be made using the same articles and letters the study would yield similar results.
