To meet as equals : Reflections on equality and authority in the after-school program (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

In this scientific essay, two leisure-time center teachers reflect on their perceptions of students' needs and their own professional scope of action in situations where they encounter students' opinions on justice. The reflections problematize the power asymmetry between teacher and student, as well as among the students, while also addressing the leisure-time teacher's aspiration to teach according to the principles of equality and democracy. Educational theories from Jacques Rancière, Paulo Freire, and Hannah Arendt provide various perspectives. The aim is to deepen the understanding of democratic approaches in leisure-time centers by examining how the relationship between teachers and students is balanced and how this balance can be understood in terms of equality and authority. The essay's findings affirm the central dilemma faced by leisure-time teachers in teaching democracy from a position of power, as well as the necessity of being aware of this challenge. At the same time, the possibility of reconciling equality and authority is emphasized, where the teacher's resistance can be interpreted as a way of treating the student as an equal. Allowing the other to speak while also being open to being addressed is seen as essential for a democratic relationship.
