Sterilization as a societal solution : A qualitative content analysis of the sterilization issue in Dagens Nyheter, Svenska Dagbladet and Arbetet 1933-1934 (English)
Abstract [en]
In 1934 the first sterilization law was established in Sweden. A law which would be further strengthened in 1941 and operated until its abolishment in 1975, with the exception of transgender people, who could be subjected to forced sterilization until 2013. This thesis examines in which ways 30 articles from three Swedish daily newspapers reported on the sterilization issue, during the year in which the proposal for a sterilization law was put forward in 1933, and the year the legislation was passed in 1934. The purpose of this research is to identify which current issues were connected to sterilization as one of or the only solution. Furthermore, the study employs a power perspective, specifically focusing on power through subjectivity and representation, utilizing the medium of the daily press. The analyzed articles illustrate how influential figures, such as high-ranking doctors and professors, played a crucial role in shaping the discourse around sterilization. This discourse interconnects sterilization with broader societal concerns, including crime, alcoholism, overcrowding, abortion and contraceptive use. The impact on this discourse is observed in the construction of individuals’ subjectivity concerning reproduction and their place in society. Furthermore, the language employed in these articles is scrutinized as a tool for producing and disseminating specific representations of those targeted for sterilization. Terms such as “mentally deficient”, “mentally ill”, “mentally abnormal”, and “antisocial” are highlighted as examples of the descriptors used to categorize and stigmatize individuals in the discourse surrounding sterilization. In conclusion, this research shows how the media influence the individual's thinking and understanding through the construction and production of discourses about sterilization.
