Abstract [en]
The school-age educare plays a vital role in pupils' development by balancing free play and guided activities. Free play fosters exploration, independence, and collaboration, while guided activities provide knowledge and support curriculum goals. As the role of School-age educare increasingly aligns with school objectives, teachers face the challenge of balancing children’s autonomy with structured activities. This study, based on interviews with six teachers and analyzed using curriculum and frame factor theories, highlights the importance of free play for creativity and social skills, alongside structured activities for achieving curriculum goals. Challenges such as time and staff shortages make this balance difficult, but planning, child involvement, and teacher presence during play ensure inclusivity and meaningful experiences. The study underscores the need for more resources and support while emphasizing the vital role of School-age educare in combining care, play, and learning for children’s development.
