Abstract [en]

The work analyzes image memes criticizing President Bolsonaro during the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil. It starts with memes that circulated on WhatsApp in 2020, but there are also associations with other contexts and timeframes. Theoretical concepts of internet memes, considerations about humor and comedy, power dynamics, endurance, and the communication processes of mediatization and circulation all contribute to the framework. In the analyzed memes, four factors of contestation and resistance against the president's policy in relation to the pandemic stand out: neglect of care; incentive to return to normality; disease testing; and defense of chloroquine. The semiological reading observes that the production and circulation of these memes act as an activity of resistance by the crowd to the actions of the Bolsonaro government in the face of the pandemic, a resistance that is discursively built from the characteristic derisive humor.
