Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Football has undergone significant changes over the past decades, transitioning from amateur ideals to being dominated by professional and commercial forces. In a Swedish context, this development began later and has been slowed by strong association democracy. Nevertheless, we now observe similar patterns in Swedish football clubs as seen in the rest of the football world. This transformation has substantially impacted the clubs, therefore a careful balance between sporting and financial results is required. Additionally, an increasing number of stakeholders affect and are affected by the clubs, making stakeholder management more complex than before. Consequently, new and higher demands are being placed on football clubs.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine the significance of the various stakeholders that Swedish elite football clubs must relate to. Furthermore, the study aims to investigate how Swedish elite football clubs work to meet the needs and demands of these stakeholders.

Method: To address the purpose of this study, a qualitative research strategy was chosen. Data was collected through eight semi-structured interviews. Furthermore, a thematic analysis was applied.

Conclusion: The study concludes that Swedish elite football clubs rely on good relationships with their stakeholders to achieve their goals. By identifying the most significant stakeholders, clubs can prioritize where to allocate the most time and resources. It can also be concluded that the stakeholders deemed most important are those who contribute significant revenue to the football clubs. This is explained by the need for football clubs to generate income, both for their survival and to optimize long-term sporting success. Therefore, effective stakeholder management is crucial for the clubs to implement.
