Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This study intends to examine how social capital affects individuals' life destinies and life situations. Using data collected by the International Social Survey Program (ISSP), Pierre Bourdieu and Robert Putnam's theories of social capital have been applied to quantitatively study how different factors have shaped individuals' lives. Bourdieu defines social capital based on the number of relationships and its convertibility to an actual resource, while Putnam places the emphasis on trust and participation in social activities as the components of his definition of social capital. By applying both definitions of social capital, we intend to capture the concept from a broad perspective. The theories have been tested through multiple and logistic regression analysis and have since been discussed based on previous research in the field. The results indicate a positive relationship between parts of Putnam's definition of social capital and the lives of individuals, while the significance is completely absent from Bourdieu's definition.
