In religious education, film mediation can have varying effects on the conversational dynamics within ethical discussions. In some cases, pupils find that the film serves as a mediator, bringing silence and chatter into meaningful conversation. For others, however, group discussions are crucial to bringing about this transformation. This study aims to investigate how the film Tjalla (Ur Play 2012) influences ethical discussions within the framework of religious studies for 10 fifth-grade students. Data was collected from a school in Stockholm using two qualitative methods—semi-structured interviews with five students and observations of two small groups. The study reveals that the discussions before and after viewing Tjalla shifted in group 1, moving from silence, chatter, and limited dialogue to solely chatter.

In contrast, group 2 demonstrated a reduction in chatter as the dominant conversational pattern. Conversation models were influenced by both film and group discussions, according to pupils interviewed. The findings from group discussions and pupil interviews partially align with previous research. In this study, it was concluded that fifth-grade pupils partially altered their conversational model through film.
