Abstract [en]

This study investigates how preschool educators view reading aloud in preschool teaching. We investigate how they perceive the purpose of reading aloud, how they interact together with the children in book conversations, and the importance of the environment. By using aqualitative survey, we interviewed seven people working in preschool. The study uses a sociocultural perspective where communicative interaction between individuals is the core. The preschool is part of a social context and the preschool's teaching is based on interaction between preschool educators and children. Therefore, the choice of the perspective goes hand in hand with our purpose and the interaction between child-educator-books. The results of the interviews show that the respondents believe that reading aloud is very important in the children’s everyday life, although it can be difficult to carry out if there is shortage of time and large groups of children. Therefore, the purpose of reading aloud may vary, but an awareness among educators shows that there is always a purpose regardless of the form of reading aloud. The main purpose is to promote children’s language development and this is easiest at times with a small group of children. The respondents believe small groups are a necessary condition for having meaningful book conversations about critical literacy like diversity, gender and values. Therefore, the respondent’s ambition to have meaningful book conversations do not seem to be as frequent as they might wish
