Abstract [en]
This essay, The Poetics of White Noise - A Conceptual Remembrance of Avant-garde Practice, explores the possibility of a postmodern avant-garde through the critical practice of conceptual writing. By engaging this poetic impulse in a dialogue with two previous avant-garde tendencies, concrete poetry and situationism, I attempt to trace an expansion of the critical potential of poetry in the contemporary spectacle of late capitalism. This prospect is defined as a form of double criticism consisting of the externalization of poetic subjectivity and its simultaneous institutionalization as a part of the social fabric of society. In opposition to the notion of postmodern theorist Fredric Jameson, this study argues for the possibility of an avant-garde practice in postmodernity through the anti-aesthetics of conceptual writing. Thus, an understanding of the avant-garde as a position in history, rather than an aesthetic movement limited to a specific place in time, is realized.
