Two docunents exist that describe massacres of Syriac Christians in 1895 inside the Ottoman Empire. These massacres are usually described as targetting only Armenians, so they give new information about the extent of the killing, plundering and impoverishment of the Christian population of Diyarbekir province. One is a description wrtitten by Habib Jarwe a Syriac Catholic priest living in Mardin, the other is a notebook compiled by American missionary Alpheus Andrus who was responsible for administering charity funds to the survivors of the massacres. Together both show how the Syriac community was greatly affected by the massacres.
