Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Climate change poses both physical and transition risks for businesses, highlighting the need for climate-related risk information in external corporate reports. Concurrently, the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS) have established a more structured regulatory context for sustainability reporting in the European Union. This research aims to explore how Swedish listed industrial companies report climate-related risks in their annual reports for the 2024 financial year, during the preparatory year before the application of CSRD, placing special emphasis on the kinds of risks reported and how concretely this information is presented. The study employs a qualitative content analysis of annual reports from 15 Swedish listed industrial companies for the 2024 financial year. This analysis primarily utilized a deductive approach. Climaterelated risks were classified into physical risks and transition risks, using four analytical categories linked to business: regulatory risks, energy-related risks, market risks, and operational risks. The degree of concreteness in risk reporting was assessed on a three-level scale consisting of low, medium, and high concreteness. Findings indicate that all the companies analyzed report both physical climate-related risks and risks linked to the climate transition. Physical risks encompass flooding, drought, water stress, extreme heat, and other severe weather events, while transition risks involve climate regulations, energy prices, technological changes, raw materials, and shifts in market dynamics and consumer demand. These risks are closely tied to various business aspects such as production, facilities, supply chains, costs, investments, and competitive conditions. The research reveals notable variations in the degree of concreteness of the information reported. NIBE, ASSA ABLOY and SKF are assessed as having a high degree of concreteness because their reporting includes specific quantitative or financial company-specific information combined with clear links to business operations. In contrast, the other twelve companies are generally assessed as having a medium degree of concreteness, and none are assessed as having a low degree of concreteness at the overall reporting level. This research offers a structured overview of how climate-related risks are presented in the reports of Swedish listed industrial companies, showing how the degree of concreteness differs among them. The results also emphasize the need to separate general climate and sustainability information from specific information describing a company's exposure to climate-related risks. CSRD and ESRS constitute the regulatory context of this study. The study examines reporting for the preparatory year before the application of CSRD for the companies included in the sample. The findings should therefore not be interpreted as effects of CSRD.
