Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to evaluate whether household consumption has a temporal relationship with GDP-growth in Sweden. The study is based on Keynes (1936) theory about how aggregate demand plays a vital role in economic growth. The study performs a time series data analysis based on quarterly data from 1982 to 2025. All the data the study has used is originally from the Swedish governmental agency Statistiska centralbyrån. An OLS-regression with robust standard errors is performed with the purpose to prevent heteroskedasticity. Household consumption is the main independent variable and GDP is the dependent variable. The study uses income, savings and employment as control variables. The results from the regression shows that there is a temporal positive significant and economically significant relationship between household consumption and Sweden’s GDP growth over time. The results from the regression should be interpreted with some caution due to the fact that the reverse relationship between GDP and household consumption also shows economical and statistical significance. This could indicate that household consumption and GDP as variables could be endogenous, which could result in the coefficients from the results being misleading. The Granger-causality test shows that household consumption does create a cause in Granger terms to GDP, which indicates that household consumption can predict future GDP values.
