Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to investigate how Swedish travelers' perceptions of Thailand, shaped through Instagram before the trip, relate to their experiences after the trip. The study is based on a qualitative method. The empirical data was collected through semi-structured interviews with twelve Swedish travelers and a netnographic survey of the respondents' Instagram posts. The material was analyzed through thematic analysis. The theoretical framework of the study is based on destination image, pre-visit image and post-visit image as well as theories about social media, Instagramism and the insta gaze. The results show that Instagram contributes to creating a selective and aestheticized image of Thailand where visually appealing environments and experiences are highlighted. At the same time, the study shows that the respondents were aware of the selective nature of the platform. After the trip, the respondents' image of Thailand was nuanced through experiences of aspects that are rarely made visible on Instagram, such as the environment, touristification, congestion and everyday life. The study also shows that the respondents themselves contribute to the reproduction of these idealized images through their own publications. Finally, the study shows how the destination image is shaped through an interaction between social media, visual representations and individual experiences.
