Abstract [sv]
Abstract [en]
The start of the 2000s saw a shift in how goodwill is accounted for, as the annual amortization was replaced with impairment tests. This gave rise to a still ongoing debate amongst researchers regarding how relevant the information conveyed through impairment tests actually is. Impairment tests rely on the management's assessment of future economic benefits. Therefore, the information value may be affected by the context surrounding the impairment decision. In this study, this context is operationalised through two factors: group size as an internal firm-specific factor and industry competition as an external market-related factor.
This study aims to contribute to the discourse on the implications of this transition by examining how both the internal and the external information environments affect the market’s valuation of goodwill impairments. The internal environment is linked to the size of the group, and the external to the level of competition within its industry. The study is done in a Swedish context and is based on a quantitative research approach where a regression model is used to study the relationships. The study also controls for the correlation between the studied factors through Pearson’s correlation coefficient and tests for multicollinearity through a VIF-test. The research draws data from 268 observations of Swedish groups during the years 2022-2024.
Results show that both competition and size are value relevant for the impairment of goodwill in Swedish groups. In contrast to previous research, the study finds that competitiveness inhibits the value relevance of impairments. The results also contribute to the mixed evidence on how size affects accounting information, providing support for the notion that larger groups produce more value relevant impairments. The primary conclusion of this research is that the market’s valuation of goodwill impairments is affected by the context surrounding goodwill and the impairment decision. In this study, this context is captured through group size and industry competition. It is suggested that competitiveness may limit groups’ willingness to impair goodwill, while group size might be connected to their ability to carry out reliable goodwill impairments.
