This essay tries to investigate the views held by Marquis de Sade and the film director Pier PaoloPasolini on the consumption of bodies and the relation to mass consumerism pertaining to neoliberalcapitalism. For this end, the text 120 Days in Sodom and the films Salò and Porcile have been studied.The bodies of others, turned into goods, is according to de Sade a right of the libertines. The productionof these 'goods' are dependent on the poor, as a social class, and the availability of pecuniary assets arenecessary for the procurement, as is violence. Pasolini stresses the transformation of bodies intoconsumer goods as a consequence of the industrialisation of Italy and the mass consumerism driven bythe neoliberal forces in power. The fact that the bodies of boys, girls and women always have beenbought and sold is discussed, and also in relation to the present, mass consumption of pornography.Also, the difference between the female and the male body is discussed in this regard. The analysis alsoshows that Pasolini succeeded in his effort to make the film Salò not fit for consumption and antipornographicby seeing the bodies as fragments of reality, non-interchangeable and irreplaceable.
