This study is a qualitative examination of public library support towards adult students in Sweden. The academic interest derives from adult students enrolled in basic education not having an appointed agent for library resources. Adult education institutions don’t need to provide a library, and public libraries don’t have an explicit directive to provide support for adult students. This study focuses on practices and conditions of public library work. The purpose is to describe the forms of support provided in relation to the public library’s directives and organizational framework. The empirical material consists of interviews with five informants from public libraries and additional relevant texts such as work policies and local library directives. The theoretical analysis aims at providing an understanding for the relationship between practice and institutional objective by examining the forms and conditions of the support through the framework of Institutional ethnography and Border pedagogy. The findings reveal that all libraries actively considered adult students and provided them with some support. In practice the support mainly consisted of lending textbooks and course literature. The perceptions of the target audience, their needs and relevance for public library work varies. Overall, the work is shaped by establishing lines between library and education support, in which the examined libraries take on different strategies. The conflict of responsibility and the lack of explicit directives appear to make the work complex, especially regarding pedagogic resources. The public libraries’ legal and local directives are in focus throughout. All work strategies relate to the public libraries’ democracy and bildung supporting role. 

Uppsatsen är en kvalitativ undersökning av folkbibliotekens stödarbete gentemot målgruppen vuxenstudenter. Forskningsintresset är sprungen ur att vuxenstudenter på grund- och gymnasienivå saknar en tilldelad aktör för biblioteksstöd. Vuxenutbildningar måste inte ha egna bibliotek och folkbiblioteken har inget explicit stöduppdrag till målgruppen. Undersökningen fokuserar på folkbibliotekens praktiska arbete och dess villkor. Syftet är att beskriva stödarbetets former i relation till folkbibliotekens uppdrag och organisatoriska ramverk. Det empiriska materialet består av intervjuer med informanter från fem folkbiblioteksverksamheter och tillhörande relevant text så som arbetspolicys eller biblioteksplaner. Den teoretiska analysen erbjuder förståelseingångar för relationen mellan arbetspraktik och institutionellt uppdrag genom att granska stödarbetets former och villkor efter de teoretiska ramverken Institutionell etnografi och Gränspedagogik. Uppsatsen visar att samtliga verksamheter förhöll sig aktivt till målgruppen vuxenstudenter och erbjöd visst stöd. I praktiken består stödet främst av läromedels- och kurslitteraturförmedling. Synen på målgruppen, dess behov och relevans för folkbiblioteken varierar. Övergripande präglas arbetet av gränsdragningar mellan biblioteks- och utbildningsstöd där de undersökta verksamheterna intar olika strategier. Ansvarskonflikten och avsaknaden av ett explicit uppdrag förstås göra stödarbetet komplext, särskilt gällande pedagogiskt stöd. Folkbibliotekens lagstyrda och lokala uppdrag är genomgående i fokus. Samtliga arbetsstrategier relaterar till folkbibliotekens demokrati- och bildningsfrämjande uppdrag.
