Abstract [en]

Medieval people in Nordic countries experienced disability as much or more as we do today. However, this is not reflected in archaeological research for several reasons including lacking historical sources and as well as lacking osteological material, a result of the pre-Christian burial customs. In this paper, I will suggest that the bioarcheology of care index allows us to better understand the lives of people with disabilities in that period. A case study featuring twenty-five individuals from Skriðuklaustur, an Augustinian monastery operating from AD 1493 to 1554, is done to demonstrate the effectiveness of this method within a Nordic context. The study shows how the lifeways vary between the twenty-five individuals as well as how a network of care was utilized in medieval Iceland.
