Linguistic Deconstruction of the Katechon Ideology : Russian State Discourse in Swedish Translation Analysed Through Triangulation of SFG, DHA and Conceptual Metaphor Theory (English)
Abstract [sv]
Abstract [en]
This study investigates how the Katechon ideology, a central but often overlooked component of contemporary Russian state discourse, manifests grammatically in Vladimir Putin’s essay On the Historical Unity of Russians and Ukrainians (2021) and how its structure reshapes in Swedish machine translation. The Katechon concept, derived from Orthodox political theology, designates Russia’s self-ascribed role as a spiritual restrainer of moral decay.Through a triangulation of Systemic Functional Grammar (Holmberg & Karlsson 2006), the Discourse-Historical Approach (Reisigl & Wodak 2008) and Conceptual Metaphor Theory (Lakoff & Johnson 1980), ten key concepts are analysed across three Swedish translations produced through DeepL from Russian, Ukrainian and English source versions. Three analytically developed categories, hagiographic erasure, ecclesiological dilution and juridical substitution, are applied to the patterns the triangulation reveals. The results show that machine translation systematically attenuates the Katechon ideology’s sacral registers through juridical substitution, with implications for how Swedish readers interpret Russian political communication and for the broader question of ideological mediation in cross-cultural discourse.
