Abstract [en]

This thesis examines how food experiences on the island are shaped, how they are perceived today, and how these experiences relate to visitors’ expectations and the conditions that characterize a seasonal destination. Through qualitative interviews with local stakeholders, ethnographic observations during low and high season, and netnographic analysis of digital material, a picture emerges of how Fjäderholmarna is positioned as a culinary destination.

The results show that Fjäderholmarna largely carries narratives about Swedish tradition, nature, and simplicity, but that these narratives are often expressed through emotions, atmospheres, and visual storytelling rather than through clear connections to local production. Digital media plays a central role in creating a romanticized image of the island.

The thesis demonstrates that culinary tourism on Fjäderholmarna is shaped between the island’s actual offerings, tourism expectations, and the local businesses ability to create attractive experiences. Food functions as a carrier of identity and atmosphere rather than geographical authenticity, and culinary experiences appear as a key tool in the island’s place development and image.
