"Becoming a parent is a major life change" : An interpersonal text analysis of 1177's parent-oriented web texts. (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This study explores parenting-related informational web texts from the information portal of the Swedish Healthcare Guide 1177 using a qualitative text analysis. The aim is to analyze how the sender establishes a relationship with the reader and how closeness and distance are constructed in the texts. The analysis is based on Systemic Functional Grammar, with a focus on the interpersonal metafunction. The material consists of three parenting-related web texts from 1177.se. Together, the texts represent different aspects of parenthood that relate to the role of the new parent, the attachment to the child and practical advice in case of conflicts. The results of the analysis highlight how interpersonal resources such as informative statements, low modality, direct address through “you” and reference to the child characterize the communication. This contributes to constructing a supportive form of communication in which the parent is positioned in a reader role characterized by responsibility, with a focus on the child’s best interests.
