Growth and Indebtedness in the Wake of Covid-19 : A study of the capital structure of Swedish small and medium-sized retail enterprises (English)
Abstract [sv]
Abstract [en]
The purpose of this study is to examine how the World Pandemic Uncertainty Index, also known as WPUI, contributed to changes in the relationship between capital structure and sales growth among Swedish small and medium-sized retail enterprises. Using a quantitative regression analysis, data from 166 retail enterprises were analyzed. The study's analysis and discussion are based on the collected empirical data together with the identified theories Pecking Order Theory och Trade off Theory, and hypotheses presented in section 2.6.
The study's identified research questions are:
- What was the debt-to-equity ratio during the period 2014-2024 in relation to WPUI, with a focus on the Covid-19 period, in Swedish small and medium-sized retail enterprises?
- What type of relationship is there between debt-to-equity ratio and sales growth during the period 2014-2024, characterized by high economic uncertainty in terms of Covid-19, in Swedish small and medium-sized retail enterprises?
In an attempt to answer the study's research questions, based on the analysis of collected data as well as the study's theories and hypotheses, the debt ratio of Swedish retail companies is perceived as relatively stable over time. The results indicate that Swedish retail enterprises strive for a long-term stable debt ratio and avoid making rapid adjustments in response to external conditions such as Covid-19. The relationship between debt ratio and sales growth showed limited changes across the studied period.
