Abstract [sv]
Abstract [en]
IFRS was implemented to harmonise the international accounting, but at the same time, other research shows that national differences still persist despite implementing IFRS, which creates a paradox about whether IFRS has been harmonised or not. The purpose of this study was to examine whether IFRS has harmonised Swedish and British manufacturing companies’ accounting practices for property, plant and equipment within IAS 16 in groups or if national differences still remain. This study also examined whether the UK’s withdrawal from the EU has affected the UK’s application of IFRS when accounting for property, plant and equipment in accordance with IAS 16. This study has been conducted as a document study where ten manufacturing companies’ annual reports from the years 2018–2022 have been analysed with a mixed method to answer the research questions. Institutional theory and path dependency have been used to explain the accounting choices companies have made. The results show that there were differences in the Swedish and British companies’ categorisation of property, plant and equipment, useful lives and impairments. The result also shows that some of the British companies changed their useful lives in the year 2020 when the UK withdrew from the EU. The study concludes that there were not many major differences in Swedish and British accounting for property plant and equipment and that the UK’s accounting for property, plant and equipment has not been significantly affected after the UK’s withdrawal from the EU. The study's conclusion is that the accounting choices have not been harmonized by IFRS, but rather that the accounting choices have been chosen based on a path dependence.
