Abstract [en]

This Book of Abstracts accompanies the conference Rhetorical Citizenship and DemocraticEducation in the Baltic Sea Region, held at Södertörn University, Stockholm, in May 2026.The conference brought together researchers, teachers, and other participants interestedin rhetorical citizenship as an educational and civic practice. The conference took as its point of departure the civic potential of rhetoricaleducation: how rhetorical and deliberative competencies are cultivated in classrooms, howthey relate to schools' democratic mission, and how they may contribute to democraticresilience in the Baltic Sea region. Particular attention was given to language education, curriculum, and classroom practice, as well as to public reason and the epistemicconditions of democratic judgement in an age marked by polarization, disinformation, andAI-mediated communication. This volume includes the abstracts of the contributions presented at the conference.Together, they reflect the conference's aim to create an interdisciplinary forum forresearch- and practice-based exchange on rhetorical education, argument literacy, deliberative agency, and civic participation.
