Implementing digital innovation in digitalized payment processes : A qualitative study of managers’ and employees’ experiences of institutional logics, digital Resources, and digital strategic initiatives in daily operations (English)
Abstract [en]

Along with the increased digitalization of economic processes, organizations face the challenge of not only implementing digital technology but also to realize the value of digital innovation in daily operations. This study aims to explore how digital innovation is implemented within digitized payment processes by examining the relations between institutional logics, digital resources and digital strategic initiatives.

The study is based on a qualitative methodology with semi-structured interviews conducted with six respondents from various organizations to gain an overview of different operations and perspectives. The theoretical concepts are based on institutional theory, digital resources, digital strategic initiatives and also a sociotechnical perspective. This allows for a multifaceted analysis of the organizational consequences of digitalization.

The results of the study show that digitized payment processes are mainly governed and shaped by institutional demands such as legitimacy, security and modernity. Digitalization is perceived as necessary to keep up with industry practices and stay current with developments. At the same time, it is evident that digital resources and digital strategic initiatives are very important for daily work, but their value is not realized until employees’ skills and workflows are coordinated together. It turns out that this adaptation occurs when employees compensate for technical limitations through individual experience and flexibility. Digital innovation in payment processes appears to be an institutionally framed process, where existing work structures are largely maintained rather than reshaped.

This thesis contributes to the research field by deepening the understanding of the implementation of digital innovation within digitized payment processes  by integrating institutional theory, digital resources and digital strategic initiatives, together with a sociotechnical perspective. It also contributes to understanding how demands for legitimacy, orchestration and human competencies interact in  everyday work, as well as how digital innovation develops as an institutionally anchored process.
