This study aims to examine the interaction between effective data driven decision making and knowledge mediation, with a specific focus on articulation and data storytelling, in the retail IT-reliant work system. Using a qualitative data collection method, seven in-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted in order to gain an understanding of the respondents' experiences, in relation to the purpose and research question. The data collection is also based on, in addition to the purpose and research question, four different theories, which are further explained in section 4. The theories describe how data and analyses both support the work with Business Intelligence but also the creation of knowledge within organizations. Knowledge is a context-specific process that is difficult to transfer and therefore needs to be translated and mediated via knowledge mediators.

The aim of the study is to gain a deeper understanding of how knowledge, with the help of articulation and data storytelling, is integrated into and supports the decision making processes of organizations. With the sociotechnical perspective as a starting point, the study also aims to create a deeper understanding of how Business Intelligence both enables and limits organizational learning in practice.

The study's identified research question is: How do employees experience the interaction between effective data driven decision making and knowledge mediators, with a specific focus on articulation and data storytelling, in the retail IT-reliant work system?

To answer the study's research question, based on analysis of collected data material and theories, the interaction between effective data driven decision making and knowledge mediation is experienced as an integrated process. With a focus on articulation, an understanding emerges of the importance of data being understandable for employees and where data storytelling has a mediating role in creating understanding. With an insufficient understanding of data and analysis and an overall picture of the available information, employees in the organization risk making poor or incorrect decisions. With data storytelling, employees can work towards a common direction and counteract fragmented knowledge in the organizations.

Denna studie syftar till att undersöka samspelet mellan effektivt datadrivet beslutsfattande och kunskapsförmedling, med specifikt fokus på artikulation och databerättande, i detaljhandelns IT-beroende arbetssystem. Med en kvalitativ datainsamlingsmetod genomfördes sju djupgående semistrukturerade intervjuer i syfte att få en förståelse för respondenternas upplevelser, kopplat till syftet och forskningsfrågan. Datainsamlingen grundar sig även i, utöver syftet och forskningsfrågan, fyra olika teorier, som förklaras djupgående i avsnitt 4. Teorierna beskriver att data och analyser både stödjer arbetet med Business Intelligence och skapandet av kunskap inom verksamheter. Kunskap är en kontextbunden process som är svår att överföra och behöver därmed översättas och förmedlas via kunskapsförmedlare.

Syftet med studien är att få en fördjupad förståelse för hur kunskap, med hjälp av artikulation och databerättande, integreras i, och stödjer verksamheters beslutsprocesser. Med det sociotekniska perspektivet som utgångspunkt, syftar studien även till att skapa en fördjupad förståelse för hur BI både möjliggör och begränsar organisatoriskt lärande i praktiken.

I försök att besvara studiens forskningsfråga, utifrån analys av insamlat datamaterial samt teorier, upplevs samspelet mellan effektivt datadrivet beslutsfattande och kunskapsförmedling som en integrerad process. Med fokus på artikulation, uppstår en förståelse i vikten av att data är begripligt för medarbetare och där databerättande har en medierande roll i skapande av förståelse. Med en bristande förståelse i vad data och analysen säger samt en bristande helhetsbild av den tillgängliga information riskerar medarbetare i verksamheten att ta sämre alternativt felaktiga beslut. Med databerättande kan medarbetare arbeta mot en gemensam riktning och motverka en fragmenterad kunskap i verksamheten.
