The aim of this qualitative interview study is to examine how school librarians understand their professional role in a time where the conditions that govern the role are changing. As the legislative reform regarding school libraries went into effect in July of 2025 it is of interest to understand how these changes are perceived by the profession. The empirical material was collected through semi structured interviews with four school librarians active within the greater Stockholm area. The data has been thematized and later analyzed using discourse analysis through the conceptual framework of Chantal Mouffes's theory of agonistic pluralism. Mouffe's understanding of the terms conflict, consensus, power and hegemony were used as analytical tools. The key findings of this study show that on top of legislature, policy documents and local expectations from administrative staff, there are three primary discoursesof the that affect the school librarians in their professional lives. These are: the discourse of visibility, or lack thereof, the discourse of the library as a safe space and the discourse of professional agency and demarcation. Thus, this study concludes that the role of the school librarian, as it is, cannot be presupposed and needs to be negotiated locally. Advocating for the profession is therefore often deemed a necessity, rather than a coincidence. The inclusion of school librarians in the school organizations is currently not guaranteed, and the professional role is often characterized by loneliness and organizational exclusion. In this study the role is portrayed as an odd bird in the school hierarchy, where hegemony affects the professions visibility, angency, as well as legitimacy. 

Syftet med denna studie är att genom semistrukturerade intervjuer undersöka hur skolbibliotekariers profesionella roll formas och omförhandlas i en tid av förändring. Skollagens reform om bemannade skolbibliotek gick i kraft i juli 2025 och därför är det av intresse att förstå hur detta uppfattas av skolbibliotekarieprofessionen. Det empiriska materialet samlades in genom semistrukturerade intervjuer med fyra skolbibliotekarier verksamma inom Stockholmsområdet. Insamlade data tematiseras och analyseras sedan genom diskursanalys där det teoretiska ramverk som använts är Chantal Mouffes teori om agonistisk pluralism och fyra av de begrepp som är nära sammankopplade. De fyra begreppen som används som analytiska verktyg är: konflik, konsensus, makt och hegemoni. Undersökningen visar att utöver lagformulering, styrdokument och förväntningar från ledning kan vi genom analysen se tre diskurser som påverkar skolbibliotekariens professionella roll: diskursen om skolbibliotekariens synlighet, diskursen om biblioteket som ett tryggt och socialt forum och diskursen om professionell positionering och gränsdragning. Studiens centrala slutsats är således att skolbibliotekariernas professionella roll inte ses som självklar utan ofta måste förhandlas fram lokalt. Skolbibliotekariernas arbete för att synliggöra sin professionella roll och potential visar sig därför ofta vara en nödvändighet, snarare än en tillfällighet. Skolbibliotekariens inkludering i skolans organisation är i nuläget inte en självklarhet. Sammantaget tecknas en bild av skolbibliotekarien som en professionell aktör vars roll ofta präglas av ensamhet och organisatoriskt utanförskap. I materialet framträder skolbibliotekarien i flera avseenden som en "udda fågel" i skolans verksamhet, där etablerade hegemoniska ordningar påverkar synlighet, handlingsutrymme och professionell legitimitet.
