För många blir hanteringen och navigeringen av den digitala vardagen en utmaning. Idag rapporteras det att 93% av den svenska befolkningen använder sig av internet dagligen. Med denna användning medföljer även ökade krav på digitala kompetenser och förmågor. Genom att utgå från personal på folkbibliotek ämnar denna studie belysa arbetet som personalen bedriver för digital inkludering. Och hur deras arbete kan ha en inverkan på lokalbefolkningens digitala behov och digitala kompetenser.

Genom att utgå från en kvalitativ ansats får personal på folkbibliotek få berätta om sina upplevelser och vilka utmaningar, eller möjligheter, de stöter på när någon söker digitalt stöd. För att söka ut olika uppfattningar och för att få en större geografisk spridning på respondenterna så kontaktades folkbibliotekspersonal utifrån Sveriges tre landindelningar, Norrland, Svealand och Götaland. I resultatkapitlet presenteras respondenternas svar utifrån tematiseringar, för att visa på hur deras reflektioner och upplevelser ter sig i verkligheten. Det empiriska materialet analyseras utifrån Henry Girouxs teori om kritisk pedagogik, med gränspedagogik och transformativt lärande som teoretiska verktyg. Valet av Girouxs teorier är att analysera personalens arbete för lokalbefolkningens utveckling av digitala kompetenser genom utmaning, uppmaning och stöd genom problemlösning. Studiens centrala slutsatser är att personalen är medvetna om att det finns ett behov av digitalt stöd, och att samarbeten med utomstående aktörer och personalens kompetenser kan vara avgörande för många. Samt att det finns en tydligt traditionell uppfattning av vad folkbibliotek har att erbjuda, och denna bild kan stoppa många från att söka sig till dem. Därav blir arbetet utanför biblioteksrummet betydande för att nå de som verkligen behöver digitalt stöd.

For many, navigating the digital daily life is becoming a challenge. Today it is estimated that 93% of the Swedish population uses the internet daily. With this use comes increased requirements of digital competencies and abilities. By focusing on the perspectives of public library staff, this study aims to highlight the work the staff is conducting for digital inclusion. And how their work can have an impact on local citizens digital needs and digital competencies. 

By using a qualitative approach for this study, the aim is to highlight the staffs own experiences and the challenges, or possibilities, they encounter when someone need digital support. To seek out and find different lived experiences and to have a broader geographical spread, public library staff was contacted throughout the three Swedish land divisions, Norrland, Svealand and Götaland. The empirical results have been compiled and thematized, in order to showcase the respondents reflections, experiences and how those manifests in their work. The empirical result is analyzed by using Henry Girouxs theory about critical pedagogy, alongside with border pedagogy and transformative learning as analytical tools. The choice of using Girouxs theories is to analyze the staffs work to challenge, encourage and support local citizens through digital problem-solving. And see how their digital competencies develop. The study’s central conclusions are that the library staff are aware that there is a need of digital support, and working with external sources and relying on their own knowledge the staffs work can be crucial for those experiencing digital difficulties. Moreover, the respondents describe a general preconceived notion of what the public library has to offer, and thereby citizens won’t look to the library for support. Therefore, the work outside the library, to reach those who are in need of support becomes even more crucial.
