The peripheral film : a case study on the position of film within Stockholms stadsbibliotek (English)
Abstract [sv]

I denna diskursanalytiska fallstudie undersöks synen på film som ett problem inom organisationen SSB utifrån Carol Bacchis (2009) diskursanalytiska ”what’s the problem represented to be” (WPR)-ansats, vilken också utgör studiens teori.

Abstract [en]

The film collection and the access to film through the public library is decreasing within the public library organisation Stockholms stadsbibliotek (SSB). In this discourse analytic case study the view on film as a problem in the organisation SSB is investigated through the lens of Carol Bacchi’s (2009) discourse analytic tool ”what’s the problem represented to be” (WPR), which is also the theory of the essay. Since this essay is a case study the study’s empirical data is public statistics, interviews and organisational documents that in turn has been analyzed through WPR. The conclusions shows that there is no common explanation to the films disappearance from SSB, the problem is instead put aside and not problematized from the organisational perspective. How the film’s position is presented differently in policies, statistics and the informants’ statements adds to the the challenges for justification for existence which prevails for the film’s position within SSB. Due to the democratic and cultural aspects of the represented problem the view on film may be affected negatively, both in it’s own right as a library media and as a cultural form.
