When interruptions become commonplace : Users’ experiences of digital notifications and the impact of design (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This study explores how users experience and manage digital notifications in daily life, focusing on productivity, stress, social interaction, and design perceptions. Semi-structured interviews with four adult smartphone users were analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis. Findings indicate that notifications are often perceived as direct interruptions affecting focus and generating stress, with impacts varying by individual strategies and context. Indirect effects from others’ notifications also fragment collective attention. Participants’ relationships are marked by ambivalence and mistrust, seeing notifications as both necessary and burdensome. Using a sociomaterial perspective (Orlikowski, 2007), the study shows that notifications are part of everyday practices shaped by technology, social norms, and structures, highlighting the need for design approaches that address both individual and collective consequences.
