Abstract [en]

This study exames the significance of social networks for unaccompaied young Afghan individuals educational and career choses in Sweden. The focus is on how these individuals navigate a new society and mobilize social resorces to overcome structural and institutional barriers. The study is based om qualitative semi-structured interviews with four unaccompained young men aged 20-30, allowing for an in-depth analysis of  thier experiences and perspectives. The interviews  are complemented by theoritical framework based on Pierre Bourdieus concepts of social capital, habitus, and fild as well as theories on discrimination and gender. The reults show that social networks serve as central resource for them through both informal and formal contact. At the same time barriers like language, cultural differences and structural discrimination limits thier access to resources and ability to build a stronger social capital.
