Digitalization and increased access to data have made Business Intelligence (BI) a central tool for decision-making in organizations. BI is used to collect, analyze, and visualize data in order to support data-driven decisions. At the same time, previous research shows that BI systems do not automatically lead to improved decision-making, their value largely depends on how they are used, understood, and implemented within the organization. Particularly significant are users’ levels of knowledge and the organization’s capacity for reflection and learning.

The purpose of this study is to examine how Business Intelligence is used as a decision support system in organizations and to analyze how lack of knowledge affects the use and implementation of BI. The study also aims to highlight the ethical consequences that may arise when BI is used without sufficient understanding of system functionality and the information underlying decision-making. The study adopts a qualitative research approach and is based on semi-structured interviews with respondents who use BI in their professional roles.

The results indicate that lack of knowledge, particularly during the implementation phase, contributes to BI systems being established as tools for control and reporting rather than as reflective decision support, where system output is accepted as objective truth. This contributes to superficial problem-solving, limited organizational learning, and a shift of responsibility from human actors to technical systems. The study also indicates that these conditions may give rise to ethical challenges related to responsibility, transparency, and decision legitimacy. The conclusion is that BI should be understood as a sociotechnical system in which knowledge, learning, and ethical responsibility are essential for sustainable and responsible decision-making.

Digitalisering och ökad datatillgång har medfört att Business Intelligence (BI) blivit ett centralt verktyg för beslutsfattande hos verksamheter. BI används för att samla in, analysera och visualisera data i syfte att stödja faktabaserade beslut. Samtidigt visar tidigare forskning att BI-system inte automatiskt leder till bättre beslutsfattande, utan att värdet i hög grad beror på hur systemet används, förstås och implementeras i verksamheten. Särskilt betydelsefull är användarnas kunskapsnivå samt verksamhetens förmåga till reflektion och lärande.

I denna studie undersöks hur BI används som beslutsstöd hos verksamheter samt hur kunskapsbrist påverkar användning och införandet av BI. Studien syftar även till att belysa vilka etiska konsekvenser som kan uppstå när BI används utan tillräcklig förståelse för systemets funktioner och den information som ligger till grund för beslutsfattandet. Studien genomförs med en kvalitativ forskningsansats och baseras på semistrukturerade intervjuer med respondenter som använder BI i sitt arbete.

Resultatet visar att kunskapsbrist, särskilt i samband med införandet, bidrar till att systemet etableras som ett styr- och rapporteringsverktyg snarare än som ett reflekterande beslutsstödofta, där systemets output accepteras som objektiv sanning. Detta bidrar till ytlig problemlösning, begränsat organisatoriskt lärande samt en förskjutning av ansvar från mänskliga aktörer till tekniska system. Studien visar även att dessa förhållanden kan ge upphov till etiska utmaningar kopplade till ansvar, transparens och beslutslegitimitet. Slutsatsen är att BI bör förstås som ett sociotekniskt system där kunskap, lärande och etiskt ansvar är avgörande för ett hållbart och ansvarsfullt beslutsfattande.
