Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study is to investigate whether pupils' use of concept cards can promote understanding in nature oriented subjects, especially biology, and whether it can promote discussion around subject specific concepts. The focus is on analyzing the impact of concept cards on learning and promoting collaborative learning.

The questions that will be answered are:

- Can concept cards promote pupils use of concepts and understanding of the nature oriented subject of biology?

- In what way can teaching with concept cards and collaborative learning promote discussion around subjectnspecific concepts?

- Do the pupils feel that working with concept cards is more educational than teaching without them?

The results from the pre and post tests, the interviews and the recordings show that concept cards can promote pupils use of concepts and understanding of the nature oriented subject of biology. The working method with concept definition cards also promotes the discussion around subject specific concepts as the pupils have the opportunity to discuss and analyze the subject specific concepts together in an interactive way. Which contributes to the pupils sharing each other's knowledge and experiences and at the same time learning from each other. The pupils also mention how the working method promotes their conceptual understanding as they have not worked with conceptual understanding before.
