Abstract [sv]
Projektet syftar till att undersöka hierarkier och skapandet av åtskillnad mellan grupper i det tidigmoderna svenska samhället. Vi ämnar göra detta genom att ta reda på hur ståndssamhället såg ut ‚Äì hur stånd synliggjordes, hur människor uppträdde och hur ståndssamhället fungerade i vardagen. Ståndssamhället kommer att tolkas i förhållande till kön och de andra kategorier för skillnadsskapande som genomskar social status. Genom att föra samman seniora och juniora forskare, studenter, fyra svenska museer och internationell expertis kommer projektet att skapa en miljö som befrämjar studiet av den sociala ordningen i Sverige. Därtill kommer det även att ha vidare effekt eftersom det ska involvera betydligt fler än universitetsforskare.Inom projektet kommer vi att: 1) utveckla och förändra den syn på sociala strukturer som dominerar historieskrivningen om det tidigmoderna Sverige. Detta för att öka intresset för området bland professionella forskare, studenter och allmänhet; 2) presentera en mer komplex bild av ståndssamhället än den gängse och argumentera för vår ståndpunkt bland etablerade historiker och studenter; 3) överbrygga den klyfta som finns mellan historisk forskning på universiteten och museer; 4) använda nya tvärvetenskapliga forskningsmetoder i universitetsundervisningen; 5) presentera det svenska ståndssamhället som ett system som är jämförbart med, och har relevans för studiet av, andra tidigmoderna samhällen.
Abstract [en]
The purpose of this project is to understand hierarchy and difference in early modern Sweden in a new, richer way. We propose to do this by emphasizing enactments, visuality and the everyday practices of difference, and by incorporating new issues to do with gender and other categories of difference that cross-cut those of status and estate. The project is generative to its nature as it brings together multidisciplinary senior and junior scholarship, teaching, museum and international partners, thereby fostering a conducive environment for the study of social order in early modern Sweden.The project will 1) elaborate the view of social structure that dominates the historiography of early modern Sweden, partly so as to attract more people (academic as well as non-academic) to take an interest in it; 2) present a more complex understanding of the ‚`society of estates’, and to have this accepted among established historians as well as rising graduate students; 3) to bridge the gap between academic historians and museum professionals; 4) to bring multidisciplinary methods of research, into the classroom; and 5) to present early modern Swedish social order as a system which is comparable with, and has relevance for the study of, other early modern societies, but also bring forth its unique traits and singular developments.
