Title [sv]
The Ideological Construction of German Romanticism/red. Mattias Pirholt; författare: Anna Cullhed, Todd Kontje, Andreas Kubik, Roland Lysell, Gernot Müller, Mattias Pirholt
Abstract [sv]
The anthology The Ideological Construction of German Romanticism, edited by Mattias Pirholt, contains six essays written in English and German by Swedish, German and American scholars: Doc. Anna Cullhed (Uppsala), Prof. Todd Kontje (San Diego), Prof. Andreas Kubik (Rostock), Prof. Roland Lysell (Stockholm), Prof. em. Gernot Müller (Uppsala) and Dr. Mattias Pirholt (Uppsala, also Introduction). All essays deal with the ideologically biased construction of the Romantic Movement since the late 18th and early 19th century. For more than two hundred years, beginning with the romantics themselves, critics have attempted to define the essence of German Romanticism, and it often boils down to statements regarding the ideological and political views of the romantics. The six contributions address the problem of the ideological construction of German Romanticism at different stages in the history of the reception of the period in question. They all underscore the difficulties associated with defining Romanticism as either progressive or reactionary; rather, the two extremes seem to exist simultaneously within the movement. As a result, the anthology as a whole succeeds in refuting the sometimes simplistic interpretations of Romanticism, which we find in literary history.
