Östersjön är en av de bästa platserna i världen för skeppsarkeologer. En anledning till detta är att flertalet av de organismer som vanligtvis bryter ned trä i haven saknas i det bräckta kalla vattnet. Trävrak kan därför bevaras skrovhela och med stående master i hundratals år nere i mörkret på bottnen. Ett annat viktigt skäl till de goda möjligheterna för skeppsarkeologiska studier i Östersjön är att innanhavet sedan mycket lång tid tillbaks varit livligt trafikerat och antalet förlisningar är många. Intensiv kommunikation och mer eller mindre fredliga maritima kontakter kan spåras tillbaks i förhistorisk tid. Sjöfart, och dess praktiska materiella förutsättning i form av båtar och skepp, är en central del av regionens och alla Östersjöländers historia. Projektets övergripande syfte är att utifrån konkreta skeppsarkeologiska exempel diskutera olika aspekter av samhällsutvecklingen i Östersjöområdet i ett långtidsperspektiv. Sjunkna skepp antas att i ett sådant perspektiv ha en stor potential att belysa såväl Östersjöhistoria som mer generella frågor om samhällsförändring på ett nytt och tidigare i princip ej utnyttjat sätt. Arkeologisk analys och tolkning av olika skeppsvrak är ett sätt att fördjupa förståelsen av och pedagogiskt närma sig de tidigare samhällsförhållanden som fortfarande påverkar oss som bor runt Östersjön idag. Källmaterialförankring är en förutsättning för såväl en trovärdig som intressant arkeologi. Projektet ämnar därför ta avstamp i såväl metodiska som teoretiska nya analyser av ett urval skeppsvrak. Fokus i forskningsarbetet kommer dock vara tolkning och historisk syntes i en mer övergripande mångdisciplinär form. Det är skeppens och sjöfartens samhälleliga roll i vid mening som står i centrum för studien. Ett sådant perspektiv berör då såväl frågor om ekonomiskt utbyte och militära strategier som olika interkulturella aspekter på sjöfart och kommunikation inom en region med stor kulturell och etniskmångfald. Projektet avses utföras i samarbete och samråd med Statens maritima museer, Southamptons universitet och med ett flertal olika marinarkeologiska kollegor i Östersjöområdet. Södertörns högskola har som enda akademiska institution i landet med marinarkeologisk utbildning och forskning ett speciellt ansvar att driva och utveckla teoretiska och forskningsrelaterade frågor i anknytning till de unika Östersjövraken.
