Hågkomstens politik: Omstridda kulturarvsprocesser vid Ignalina och Barsebäcks kärnkraftverk

Politics of remembering: Contested heritage processes at Ignalina and Barsebäck nuclear power plants
Abstract [sv]
Is it possible to understand a nuclear power plant as a heritage site? Is it a fabric that can carry important knowledge and meaning, relevant to individuals and societies also after it has been closed down? And if so, who is entitled to define its significance; be it as a symbol of national independence, an emblem for technical progress, a solution to the climate threat, or a silhouette of potential disaster, an object devastating the landscape and an irresponsible answer to a continuously increasing energy consumption? The aim of this project is to develop deeper insights into the politics of remembering, by studying heritage processes at two nuclear power plants: Barsebäck in Sweden and Ignalina in Lithuania. Theoretically, the study will explore ways to analyse and describe heritage as a process, that is, negotiations about significance, in a generally valid manner, from a hermeneutic interpretative perspective. Empirically, the project intends to investigate the changing perceptions of two contested sites in different political settings, covering four decades from their establishment up to today. The project will comprise field work and interviews, and make use of newspaper archives, nuclear power authorities archives, city planning archives and heritage institution archives.
