Abstract [sv]

Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

These days, an archivist must be well-versed in information technology. What, though, ought an archivist to know? The answer to this question is crucial for those who organize archival science courses now and will continue to be a question we must address on multiple occasions in the future.

In my poster, I'll outline some potential approaches to the information technology-focused portion of an archivist's training. From a beginning computing course that might not be appropriate for a university education in other respects to an extreme notion I created dubbed "Timeless fullstack," which is difficult to teach within the confines of a university education.

The poster is a part of a continuous research project, a presentation of forthcoming studies, and will present and discuss a number of concepts that could be used in defining what the student in archival science actually needs to know about IT.

The poster will show and explore some notions that might be used to define what an archival science student actually needs to know about IT. It is part of an ongoing research effort and a presentation of upcoming investigations.

Abstract [en]

In September 2016, the journalist Ola Wong wrote an op-ed in the newspaper Svenska Dagbladet, “The Government Is Turning the Museums into Propaganda Centers.” Wong claimed to have seen the change at the Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities in Stockholm, arguing that it had shifted from intellectual position to “sensitiveness to shallow opinions in the media and politics.” The text started the debate that would continue for several years. The purpose of the article is to deconstruct the debate regarding the Swedish museums over the last eight years, paying a special attention to the debate between Wong and various representatives from Swedish museums. The analysis focuses on claims regarding the purpose of a museum made in the debate, using previous theoretical discussions on the topic. The study showed that the participants in the discussion were unable to agree on the nature of issue. This reminds of what Frida Beckman and Nora Hämäläinen call kultursidesmissförstånd, or a “feuilletonistic misunderstanding,” where the participants never agree on common ground, misinterpret and misunderstand each other. Moreover, they disagree on situation in question and hold incompatible views.

Abstract [en]

The communications from the source "Q" are regarded by the QAnon movement, a political and conspiracy theory group that rose to prominence in the early months of 2021 after storming the Capitol in Washington, D.C., as their primary information source. Between November 2017 and November 2022, "Q" posted brief remarks on many message boards, including 4Chan, 8Chan, and others. The messages make predictions about future political developments and offer commentary on current political happenings (OperationQ 2025).

The Q-drop corpus—the 4,966 posts made by the poster Q—is full of rhetorical questions with the purpose of inciting the reader to "Do your own research." Relating to earlier research, I have made a collection of all Q-drops in .txt format, which makes it possible to search through all posts using the program Grep (Grep 2025). In this poster I will map and analyse the use of rhetorical questions in the corpus; Especially such rhetorical questions that invite the reader to do their own research using a search engine.

Purpose

“Do your own research” or DYOR has been trending in social media for a couple of years. It is often used in connection to the spread of conspiracy theories and by authors on the subject described as: “The basic idea behind DYOR is that laypeople should not follow the conclusions of experts but instead seek out information on their own to arrive at their own conclusions.” (Ballatyne et al 2022). Using a known corpus of conspiracy theory as the Q-drops to investigate the use of DYOR-inciting will put new light on the reciprocative nature of conspiracy theory.

Method

The investigation is performed in two phases. First a mapping phase, in which the material is reviewed through a hermeneutic method and categories of injunction towards “do your own research” are created. Then an analytical phase in which a search for these different categories in the material is performed. This will form the basis of an analysis of how the Q-drops urges the followers to “Do their own research.” The research process and the results are presented in the form of a poster.

Results

There will be two types of results. First, a variety of categories that describe the settings in which DYOR is employed are the outcomes of the mapping process. The second is the frequency of occurrence of each category in the corpus.

Abstract [en]

In 1963, the artist Friedrich Jürgenson announced to the Swedish press that he had established contact with the deceased through messages delivered via radio or tape recorder. This proclamation sparked a debate regarding the authenticity of his recordings. Were the voices truly those of the dead? Jürgenson attracted both critics and supporters, initiating a movement that would reach its peak in the 1970s. This paper focuses on the technical and theological aspects of the electronic voice phenomenon (EVP). How did the movement explain the technique used to transmit messages from the realm of the dead to our world? What did the dead wish to communicate—what kinds of messages were conveyed? Who were the transmitting spirits, and how did they describe their realm? This investigation is conducted through an analysis of the texts written by practitioners of the electronic voice phenomenon regarding their encounters with these spirits.

Abstract [en]

The mysticism of the 19th and 20th centuries has often been perceived as a reaction towards the new fast, dense, and modern world. But is it not so that it thrives on the same material foundations, globalism, networks, and mass production of text, that built our contemporary global information society? In this article, thoughts found in the writings of the Swedish mystic and translator Baron Eric Hermelin are analyzed. Hermelin was born into a Swedish noble aristocratic family in 1860. After traveling through the British Empire as a soldier in his youth, he returned to Sweden with books and knowledge. Unfortunately, he spent most of his remaining life incarcerated in the mental hospital St. Lars in the university town of Lund in the south of Sweden. But from the hospital, he released translations of Rumi, Khayyam, and other Persian mystics as well as reflections on Böhme and Swedenborg. The analysis will use Eric Hermelin’s work and focus on the process of creating and delivering the texts of the Persian Sufis to a Swedish audience.

Abstract [en]

From November 2017 and forwards the mystical anonymous poster ”Q” filled their followers with messages regarding American politics acting like the person behind the Q was someone who had insight into both the intelligence community and the important political surroundings. Q posted on different image boards but as the amount of followers grew different web pages were created where canonical Q-posts (usually called ”drops” or Q-drops”) was preserved, numbered, tagged and interlinked. The QAnons – the movement formed around the messages from Q – were fierce discussants on the Internet occupying almost every possible social media platform. The movement reached it’s peak when the QAnons spearheaded the attack against the Capitol on the 6th of January 2021. During the autumn of 2020 almost all big social media platforms had started to purge QAnons, kickbanning them and thus removing their accounts and created content.

In January 2021 I started to preserve all Q-posts downloading them in raw text format and saving them as individual files and also saving them in picture format. It is a very interesting material, full of dog whistling, echo-chamber-like links to supporters social media and memes whose messages are very internal. Downloading the posts as text has given me a possibility to use different text processing tools to investigate the corpus. It has also given me an insight into what happens with preserved internet content when links suddenly are broken and the movement surrounding the content is banned. How do we preserve the content of a deplatformed movement? What are the limits of digital preservation of interlinked content created by a community?

Abstract [en]

In Sweden where my research is performed, most if not all schools on all levels use a digital platform to communicate with children and their parents. It could be any type of communication, from personal communication regarding a child to information regarding homework for a class, what you need to bring to the field trip, and so on. In Sweden, having a law regarding compulsory school attendance between the age of 6 and 15, and also having a rather strict law regarding who could access the information regarding, the information transferred through these platforms are both important and under restricted access.

The problem I investigate is when this system meets a child with special needs. Especially if that child and its parents are supported through different services. Having a support family that the child lives with during periods of time or an institution that the child stays at temporarily. Because of the restricted access to the digital platforms they are unavailable within such arrangements, forcing schools to choose other forms of communication – mostly in the form of analog “contact books”. There are also information security issues when communicating information regarding the child's medical needs through digital platforms.

These problems with the use of digital platforms have led to some ad hoc solutions in Uppsala municipality, which is the focus of my investigation. In this poster, I will explain the process of communication and the consequences regarding information security and preservation of archives when a system forces users to use analog communication where digital communication is the norm.
