Abstract [en]

Globalization has become one of the most prominent signs of our current era. Today, globalization affects everyone and is visible everywhere. We see it in the morning at home when we set the table for breakfast and look at the products we consume, during the day at work when we handle tasks with advanced technologies no matter what field we are in, and in the evening when we listen to the daily news from around the world, informing us about global political and social issues. Globalization awakens thoughts and feelings, and due to its profound impact on our lives, it means different things to different social and political actors. Not surprisingly, since the 1990s, globalization has also had a significant impact on the social sciences, leading to some major breakthroughs due to the holistic nature of these studies. However, regardless of the global issue we address, we only examine specific processes related to our research questions, which is why case studies are essential in this field. Consequently, the contributions provide some current examples of the evolving dynamics of interconnectedness, analyzing its political and social ramifications, such as the historical dimension of the “conservative revolution” and the criticism of liberal ideas, depiction of social hardship and the struggle of the powerless in neoliberal democracies in new popular forms of global outreach, or the new concept of “bridge citizens” as a response to the challenge of migration linked to personal heritage of tradition in a new environment.

Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Globalization is often used in research as an empirical lens to examine ongoing developments over time, a process that integrates people and nations into larger structures and communities while dissolving traditional barriers. Historians argue that innovations in technology, transportation, and communication have driven globalization over the long term. However, a significant shift occurred with the end of the Cold War, which notably accelerated European political and economic integration. This study examines Europe’s integration processes from a historical perspective and explores the differing development trajectories in Western and Eastern Europe before the collapse of the Soviet Union in terms of their political and economic progress toward the neoliberal democratic framework of the twentieth century. The central hypothesis of this contribution is that the divergent development paths of Eastern and Western Europe are primarily attributable to the Soviet Union’s influence on international relations during the Cold War. However, some common development paths that extend beyond the political and ideological division of Europe can be recognized with respect to the shared need for welfare. This chapter explores the causes, challenges, and effects of European globalization, focusing on the key economic, political, and social factors that have influenced this process.

Abstract [en]

This article explores the tensions within inclusive education and emphasises the research community’s responsibility to enhance the understanding and practical application of inclusive practices. It highlights the challenges the researchers face when navigating diverse scientific disciplines, often leading to entrenched policies that overlook varied epistemologies. We aim to display and open up for scrutiny current and ongoing social epistemologies in research on inclusive education that can be achieved through a diverse research environment in the field of inclusive education, and its attempt to recognise and accommodate diverse epistemologies within research on inclusive education. Utilising Bacchi’s comparative policy analysis, we analyse researchers’ interpretations of inclusion and its implications. The article concludes by advocating for a broader embrace of theoretical diversity and a more nuanced, lived understanding of inclusion, challenging prevailing monocultural interpretations.

Abstract [en]

Supervision of graduate and postgraduate students is an intriguing experience that often involves a highly individualized teaching and learning processes, frequently occuring on a person-to-person basis. While all forms of student supervision present their own challenges, intercultural differences add an additional layer of complexity to the situation. Moreover, the supervisory task is sometimes shared by several people with different cultural and pedagogical backgrounds. Students are also influenced by the cultural settings of their previous university studies, such as different kinds of academic norms and hierarchies. Given these factors, we put forward our interest in questions such as: Shuld you adjust your supervision accordingly? If so, how? And if not, how can you enrich the learning process for the students with your different approaches and perspectives?

Abstract [en]

In times when global strategic power relations are being revised, security threats increase alongside social uncertainty and inequality. During these periods, contributions that explore the changing dynamics of global interconnectedness, analyzing their political and social ramifications, not least from a historical perspective, are essential to identify the issues, discuss their various aspects, present ongoing research reflecting these changes, and support potential solutions. These efforts are vital because they encourage looking both backward and forward in time.

The introductory chapter addresses the shift in popular understanding of globalization that fuels the current discussions on the topic. It provides an overview of the key findings in knowledge surrounding contemporary studies of global issues and advocates for interdisciplinary exchange involving multidisciplinary approaches to empirically exemplify global issues, thereby mobilizing academic discussions on the complex nature of global processes.
