    Abstract [en]

The purpose with this essay is to analyze teachers (in mother language and preparatory classes) perspective and see how they choose to work with different tools, and at the same time see how the teachers approach the pupils from an intercultural, mathematical and linguistical perspective. We also want to observe if there are any similarities and/or differences between the teachers in how they choose to work with the pupils with second language in the classroom.

Our keywords are intercultural approach, mathematical treatment and linguistical treatment. We study the working methods and tactics practiced by the teachers, which we find relevant to use in this essay. To get a wider perspective we decided to observe two different schools in different districts. We use a qualitative method as the basis in our research which provides a deeper view of the school environment.

Result: This essay shows that the teachers have similarities in their approach to students which contains an intercultural perspective. It was also shown in different ways in both schools how the teachers approached the pupils on the subjects of mathematic and linguistic. Regarding cooperation with teachers of mother language it is said to play a crucial role in how pupils with second language will develop their understanding and vocabulary.

Turkiet ser sin framtid i EU: En fallstudie av EU:s påverkan på turkisk demokrati2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The goal of this paper is to analyze the influence of the EU on Turkish democracy. In order to achieve this aim, the paper concentrates on three areas, as representative institutions, opposition parties and freedom of expression. The impact of the EU on Turkey has been more explicit during the last decades. In particular since 1999 when the country became a candidate for membership, and that will eventually lead to Turkey joining the European Union. Thereby this paper will examine the demands EU set up for the country and how Turkey accomplishes these criteria. The first part of the analysis focuses on the conditions EU set up for Turkish membership, while the second part explains Turkey’s progress in meeting those demands.  The theories are Europeanization and the institution of freedom of expression which is part of Polyarchy. These will be used to answer the question: Which demands EU set up for Turkey and to what extent the country applies to those demands? The paper is based on qualitative method as a case study. Turkey has in some areas made progress regard to freedom of expression and representative institutions, however the country must continue with political reforms in those areas.

    Abstract [en]

This thesis investigates how teachers in political science course A, all from municipal upper secondary schools work with planning their lessons. Due to nationwide regulations and goals set by the The Swedish National Agency for Education, the teachers have to plan their lessons basing on these regulations. However it is not defined how to concretely implement these regulations when planning for the lessons, which may lead to the fact that the teachers’ own interpretations of the regulations cannot be fully avoided in the process of planning for the lessons. The investigation consists of five interviews made with teachers in political science, all from municipal upper secondary schools. The teachers who have taken part in this report come from two different municipal upper secondary schools. The result in this report partly shows that although the basic reference topics set by The Swedish National Agency for Education is the same for each teacher in political science, the planning of the lessons structure can be very different. For example, when the five teachers plan how to make the pupils understand the concept of "democracy", they all planned their lessons having the regulations and goals in mind, but they all have a unique approach in how to prepare for their lessons and explain the concept of "democracy" for their pupils.

Att berätta historia: En studie om museers verksamhet2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 15 credits / 22,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay is to look at how museums design their activities as tourist destinations through the dissemination of history. In order to research this problem we have posed the following questions: How do museums act in order to animate and interpret history? What does the future hold for the museums? In order to find the answers to these questions we have made a deep-going analysis of the activities of four museums, Nordiska Museet, Etnografiska Museet, Historiska Museet and Naturhistoriska Museet. These museums have been analyzed by means of interviews, observations and the study of documents. Our theoretical perspective is informed by a hermeneutic perspective as well as Foucault´s definition of museums as institutions, and the concept of storytelling. Our conclusions are as follows: Museums have progressed from an Enlightenment ideal to a more post-modern approach, which means that they want to activate the visitors and make them reflect and form their own opinion by presenting different versions of the past that will stimulate imagination. Our belief is that this trend will continue and the museums will become even more oriented towards creative tourism at the same time as they will protect their position as vehicles and creators of knowledge and guardians of the Swedish cultural heritage. Unfortunately a growing centralization of the field is working in the direction of limiting the range of offers and restricting the museums´ potential to offer different versions of the past.

En analys av lärarhandledningar inom biologiämnet och Lpo 94: en fråga om begränsad undervisningsvariation?2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

During our education time, we have heard on several occasions how the high changing rate in the society also influences the education area. That changing process mainly originates from the transform that a school underwent, i.e. the decentralization meaning a delegation of responsibility from a national to local government and the particular school. The main idea that started a changing process goes under the slogan “a school for everyone”. The new school was created by the newest teaching plan where the individualization of each individual student is a main point on the agenda. A countless number of analyses of Lpo 94 during our education have given us a reason to reflect over how this individualization should take place. The ambition to find an answer on that question led us to start from a couple of questions at issues that foremost handles children’s different ways to learn as well as the design of the teaching supervision in contrast to today’s teaching plan and the newer research within the chosen subject area. The aim of this work is thus to analyze and understand the contents of four different teaching supervisions within biology as a subject area and to try to appoint whether requirements on varied education from Lpo 94 is obeyed. Our answer on how to achieve requirements on individualization from Lpo 94, during this work, is to apply a varied education with a number of senses and intelligences as a frame of reference. Our conclusion and thus the result of our analysis is that the teaching supervisions deficiently reach the requirements that involve varied education in Lpo 94. The degree deficiency varies between different teaching supervisions.

Lojalitet på en biografmarknad2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the essay is to study and create understanding to the bilingual students' perspective on their linguistic skills and the use of them as resources in a scholastic context. A qualitative method has been used to collect empirical data, based on the experiences and perspectives of the students. Bilingualism is defined and past research, which has shown how their bilingualism has influenced them, has been linked with this study. Definition of mother tongue and the meaning of mother tongue tuition for student immigrants' development have been discussed. This research has shown that the students feel their bilingualism is a natural occurrence. A feeling of importance for their mother tongue is expressed, considering the aspect to preserve their cultural fellowship. They look at bilingualism as an opportunity for development and learning and not as an obstacle. Despite the positive attitudes towards their linguistic situation they feel that they have been forced to overlook this competence in scholastic context. Another problem though, is that the mother tongue tuition is experienced as a separate occurrence outside the syllabus of the school, instead of being a part of it.

Bolagsstyrning: En kartläggning av styrelsers arbete med strategifrågori svenska börsnoterade bolag2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Corporate governance intensified due to the corporate scandals in the USA which led to a new law the so called Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX).

In 2005 the "Svensk kod för bolagsstyrning" (The Code) was introduced. The main purpose of The Code is to strengthen the confidence in Swedish companies quoted on the Stockholm Stock Exchange. The Code focuses on the working process of boards. The rules set by The Code places higher demands on the board.  Among many other duties the board has to establish long term operational goals and strategy. The introduction of The Code has increased the board's administrative workload and the natural question is if The Code has limited the board's ability to work with strategic issues.

The purpose of this study is to find out if the introduction of  The Code has had some limiting impact on boards ability to work with strategic issues. The study shall account for eventual divergences between different board members responses depending on the role they have on the board.

The study focuses on the 26 corporations registered in Sweden and listed on the OMXS30TM-index. A survey has been sent to the 270 board members of these companies. The response rate was 31 percent. The highest response rate was in the group Chairmen of The Board which was as high as 70 percent. The study is based on general theories of corporate governance and the role of boards in regards to working with corporate strategy.

Strategic issues are generally handled both as an integral part of each board meeting and also dealt with at annual strategy board meeting. Most boards hold six board meetings per year and five of them include strategic issues. Board members prefer to maintain the way they handle strategic issues. Representatives of the employees and directors operatively employed in the company prefer yearly strategy meetings.

The study does not confirm that the administrative workload is an obstacle for the board to work with strategic issues.

The board members believe they have access to the information needed and believe they have competent board members. Two chairmen do not agree to have access to the information needed to enable them to work with strategic issues.

The majority of chairmen of the board of directors and of director employed operatively in the company agree that there needs to be more emphasis on specific industry and business competence when recruiting new board members. Representatives of the employees are more divided in respect to this issue.

To implement a strategy committee similar to remuneration or audit committees in order to improve the board's strategic work is not a solution the board members find suitable.

The claim that the introduction of the code with its many rules should have had a negative impact on the board's possibilities to focus on strategic issues cannot be confirmed by the survey.

    Abstract [en]

I have been using qualitative interviews to explore music's influence in school from a learning perspective, community perspective and identity-building perspective. I have visited two classes at two different schools to do these interviews with ten informants, both students and teachers. My interview questions were almost the same for both students and teachers, but differed in wording. My research is based on the informants’ answers and relevant sources such as literary books, curricula and the Internet.

After fieldwork was completed, I transcribed the interviews to further analyze them according to relevant theories, such as Bergman (2009) and Antal Lundström (1996). I am satisfied with the results of the research and I am glad that the sources I have found verify my own theories about music's understated value in schools and that music is really a necessary tool to help learning, community and identity creation. Regrettably I have not found any theories that take an opposite stance to my views.

Through my research I have found that music can benefit most students, not all because everyone has different needs - but many, in their learning process. Music, for example, helps with a new means of expression for students. I have also found that music increases the cohesion and creates community in groups where the participants reveals new sides to each other - something that creates a strong and secure group. The music gives students the opportunity to try different roles - it strengthens the students' personalities and helps them in their identity formation.

Gender in schoolbooks: A text analysis of Swedish schoolbooks on religion2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The intention of this essay is to critically analyze which perspective on gender that is conveyed in schoolbooks on religion in contemporary Sweden. The main question is: what gender perspective is conveyed in schoolbooks on religion? The sub questions are: what does the writer emphasize and what has the writer excluded from the text? Are the historical and discursive aspects of gender presented in the schoolbooks? What remains to be developed regarding the gender perspective in the schoolbooks?Earlier research has shown that men are overrepresented in the schoolbooks and that women and men are shown in stereotypical ways. This study highlights whether two books, written for the A-course in the upper secondary school and printed in 2007 and 2008, have been influenced by the recent requirements on equality in teaching material. The method used is a text analysis built on critical theory and Yvonne Hirdman’s theory of the gender system. The analysis is based on gender theory. The result shows that gender issues mainly are not regarded as important for religion in schoolbooks, when women are visible it is mostly their social role within religions that is represented and explained. The gender system of the religions is excluded from the text. The main conclusion from this study is that the schoolbooks need a more profound gender perspective, where masculinity and femininity are dealt with as human-created concepts.

Historielärobokens användning: En studie om gymnasielärares användning av historieläroboken.2009Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis is to examine how secondary teachers in the subject of history are using the textbook in their teaching. Four questions are being dealt with in this thesis. What importance is being placed on the use of history textbooks by the secondary teachers? What priorities do the secondary teachers have? How do they deal with student interests? And what is the importance of the secondary teachers’ work experience?

I have interviewed four secondary teachers with different work experience to complete this thesis. A Dictaphone has been used in all the interviews.

Research has shown that textbooks now have a central role in teaching and the lack of alternative materials and reduction of teaching hours has made it difficult to replace.

The main conclusions of the thesis are that the history textbook has a dual role depending on the teacher you ask, and that the history book is used differently by the teachers. The priorities vary depending on the students that are currently enrolled and their interests are. Teachers with less work experience have a rather negative attitude to the textbook and believe that it can be rigid, while teachers with more experience see it as a tool for engaging the weaker students. However, the history textbook is required, and even the teachers who are not using the history textbook can all confirm that: because even a teacher who is not using it has the history textbook for the students to have something to refer to if needed.

Eco-labelling of houses and the concept of sustainable housing: A comparative study of the UK and Sweden2008Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim with this study is to evaluate if standardization of sustainable housing is a practical solution to address the objectives/reach the goals of sustainable housing. The point of departure is that eco-labelling of houses is a way to put sustainable housing into practice. The Nordic Swan criteria for small houses and the UK Code for Sustainable Homes are two recently developed schemes for sustainable construction and design. These two labelling systems are chosen as case studies in order to compare and examine the practice of sustainable housing. How can the goals of sustainable housing be met in the form of eco- labelling? What are the benefits and obstacles/limitations for the cases to be effective and sustainable?  What can explain differences between the two cases? And is the function and organisation of the cases best explained by sustainable development ideas or ecological modernization?  It is suggested in the view of path dependency theory that the UK’s and Sweden’s decisions based on their expectations concerning development of the EU flower has made their respective eco-labelling of houses to have different organisational structure. The Code as a sector-specific label has the advantage, compared to the Swan, of being able to change its structure depending on the needs of pressure in the network of government, business and consumers.  The Code has several criteria concerning sustainable living besides criteria concerning environmental construction of the house and can therefore be considered as part of the sustainable development discourse.

Dubai - en hållbar idé?: En inblick i hållbar utveckling och en unik region.2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Abstract [en]

Cover Story is a project, which students at Lillholms - and Ekholms School worked in during spring and fall of 2009. Several school subjects were integrated in project; social studies, art and Swedish, to empower the students to create, implement and design a magazine. The purpose of the project was to give the students the opportunity to fantasize about the future and their dreams by creating their very own Cover Story. During the project I realized that the student’s selection of magazine genre had a direct relation to the gender of the students themselves. The boys mostly chose motor and car sports magazines as their Cover Story. The girls on the other hand preferred to choose dog and fashion magazines.

Today there are an endless number of magazines in different interests, genres and professions. For instance, the magazine called Frida, which is directed to young girls, writes about various music groups, trends and gossip. The magazine called Autobilsport, which is mostly directed to men, covers news about upcoming cars and the latest audio equipment. In other words, there is a notion of masculinity and femininity even in the selection of magazines.

My natural interest of this behaviour drove me to further study the subject and to get closure to this already started work. This study is written in order to analyze students' and teachers' thoughts about the gender aspect in relation to the project. The method used to collect data and information has been through interviews, questionnaire surveys and field observations. All materials have been developed in order to give deeper answers to the questions sought. The answers that emerged have then been analyzed in relation to selected theories.

Whether the gender has been a significant factor in the students' choice of a Cover Story is difficult to answer. During the investigation it was discovered that the students themselves led their choice not only according to their interests and dreams, but also according to the selection of magazines that were at hand. The teachers argued that ideas are everywhere in society and not only in newspapers. However, the teachers have not been allowed to challenge or encourage students' choice of Cover Story.

"En inställd spelning är en spelning det också...": Ulf Lundells olika realiteter och identiteter i romanerna Jack, En varg söker sin flock och Värmen2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Ulf Lundell is one of the most famous songwriters and authors in Sweden. He has written fifteen works of fiction and they’ve all same theme – a lonely man trying to look into his own past life. They are all built on a character, writing from an I-perspective, having a bit of Lundells own biography in there’s personality.

The aim of his thesis is to find out how Ulf Lundell presents him self in his fictive characters, and will trace the authors development from a psychological point of view. The theoretic starting points are Lacans Freudian concepts “idealego”, “egoideal” and “the superego”, describing the psychological alteration at the author.

The examination contains an analysis of Lundells novels Jack, En varg söker sin flock and Värmen, and throws light on the relationship between the author and his characters, and how it developes and changes with Lundells literary development. In this consideration are narrative theories a basic factor.

This work will also try to illustrate what has inspired Lundell in creating his fiction figures, and finally how he creates his own lived life on these literary characters.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this examination paper is to get an understanding as an upcoming teacher about how friends make an important impact on children’s identity development in school, their choice of friends circle and what kind of groups there can occur among them. With a deeper comprehension of these circumstances should an educationalist be more considerate and adapt his or hers education to prevent negative group formations and to be an outsider. To achieve my results I used a qualitative research method where I through observation handpicked eight students from upper level of compulsory school with different friend circles from two classes for further interviews. Beside this I observed students in their school environment for three days. My conclusion by this research is that, the society, the school and the home are three very important factors that make big impact on children’s identity development. Even friendship has an important role on their development. Children choose their friends though common interest which can lead to group formations where negative group formations can occur.

    Abstract [en]

In this Survey the author discusses teachers interpretation of the documents formulated by the government. Because of difficulties with knowing what the politicians mean, the author claims that teachers through collegial reflections are the ones who best knows what should be done in school. The survey discusses different ideals about implementation of policies. Through interviews with headmaster and teachers the author tries to answer weather or not the school that is in focus can be understood so that it has a legible work ethics. Something that the teachers could rely on when it comes to knowing what it means to fulfill documents formulated by politicians.

Ungdomars informationssökning på Internet: Vad ungdomar tycker om sina egna kompetenser och erfarenheter2009Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The study aims to investigate student’s attitudes and experiences of information retrieval on the Internet, as tools for learning. I have been interested of their own views about their own knowledge and experience in the subject, information seeking on the Internet. The focus is on what they perceive as problematic, what skills they consider they have and what needs they have in terms of teaching. Data were collected via questionnaires. About 200 students at the second year in high school have been asked about the problems and difficulties they have within seeking on the Internet. The study is especially framed within a sociocultural perspective of learning. The study aims to answer following questions:

Do the students think that they, in a concentrated way, can orient themselves and seek information on the Internet? Do the students think that they had received education in information seeking on the Internet? Do the students think that they need more skills in information seeking on the Internet?

The result shows that this millennial generation see themselves as competent users of the Internet, the World Wide Web (www). Young people are attracted by working with the computer as tool for learning, while teachers may feel that the boundary between school and leisure time is small. The students have a sense of success in every moment of internet seeking. Pupils and teachers have different skills on the Internet. This applies to teachers gain knowledge of it and how to teach the skills students need. Since the computer is a common tool in our workplaces in the community, is it important for the school to prepare the students for the future. It is important for all educators in the school, individually and jointly to reflect on the information that will contribute to the student's own knowledge creation and in what way.

Etableringsförutsättningar i en övergångsekonomi: Svenska tjänsteföretag i Ryssland2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The survey aims to highlight and describe how the schools' teaching strategies look like in the work of pupils from the neuropsychiatric disability AD/HD (Attention Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder). The pedagogical strategies have been investigated in an integrated and segregated teaching method. The study is qualitative in nature where the interviews conducted, first with a student who has been diagnosed AD/HD but also with teachers from each school who is well versed in student teaching and work. The results of the study show that knowledge and commitment about AD/HD is crucial to students' role and function in school. If knowledge and commitment is sufficient for the student teaching tailored to student needs and the risk of misunderstandings occur decreases. Security is a key factor for students who have been diagnosed AD/HD and learning form in itself is no guarantee that students will feel safe. Students have in the two teaching methods stressed that they feel safe at school and with their education and therefore has no teaching method preferred. It's more about building relationships, which in turn is essential for the students to embrace the teaching strategies at all. Building relationships with students also need their pedagogical strategies. They are determined in turn by the patience, time, reliability and solid understanding. The conclusion of the investigation, regardless of the type of instruction form the pupil is given, is that knowledge and the willingness of school personnel to understand the neuro-psychiatric disability AD/HD is necessary for the pupil needs to be able to satisfy.

"Språket är ett medel, inte ett mål...": Några lärares syn på språkutveckling i grundskolans senare år och på gymnasiet i den språksatsande kommunen Huddinge2009Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay is to examine how four of the teachers employed in Huddinge municipality look at the language developing aspects of their teaching, and how their views relate to the curriculum and the national and local syllabi of the subject Swedish within upper level of compulsory school and upper secondary school. The municipality's ambitions and aims with language development as a prioritized area functions as a background throughout the essay.

The main issues concern the teacher's views on language development, their opinions about the course syllabi, the teachers' roles in relation to language development, and their attitude towards the Huddinge municipality's ambition to prioritize language development. Information has been gathered through semi-structured interviews with working teachers, and through analysis of the syllabus documents using a modified level-analysis model. The empirical material is related to several theoretical perspectives, such as socio-cultural perspectives on learning, and curriculum theory.

The main results state that teachers very much emphasize the social and communicative functions of language, and also that reading is stressed as important for good language development. The curricula and syllabi are regarded as supportive tools; however they are not used very frequently in the everyday work. The municipality's ambitions regarding language development are known to the teachers, but they would like to see coordination on a municipal level when it comes to the various language development related projects within the municipality. The teachers also request more occasions for exchanging experiences and dialogue with others.

    Abstract [en]

I have statistically worked up a material from 228 graves from the late Iron Age in the area of Mälardalen.

In my material I have gathered the incidence of combs, knifes, beads, weapons whetstones and torshammarsrings.

I have found that beads are overrepresented in graves of women and whetstones in graves of men. I only found weapons in graves from male.

I found no indication from my statistic hypothesis (Z-test) that a grave that contains more than three beads should define the grave of a woman. A grave that contains a lot of beads, more than 20, consider I as a female gender.

Combs, knifes and torshammarsring are considered as gender neutral.

Speglingen av organisationers egenintresse i remissvar: En studie av yttranden över fyra av Statens Offentliga Utredningar2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 30 credits / 45 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Objective: In this thesis, we assume that the organizations' interests are governing their behavior/positions. It seems possible to draw conclusions about organizations'interests on the basis of the behavior / positions that will appear in the givenopinions on Swedish Public Investigations. The purpose of this thesis is toidentify self-interests of the studied organizations as they appear in their givenopinions.

Method: The authors have made a qualitative and quantitative study of the opinions.

Theoretical perspective: The basis of the study is the organization theories that focus the self-interest oforganizations.

Empiric: Information is taken from four Swedish Public Investigations: the New Company Act, International Accounting for Swedish companies, Abolition of the audit requirement for small and medium sized enterprise and Simplified accounting. Altogether 310 opinions have been given on these, out of which we have studied 59. Furthermore, we have collected information on tasks, activities and objectives from the websites of the opinion giving organizations.

Conclusions: In the literature, we found, as mentioned, that organizations havet hree self- interests which we define as general self-interests. They are the interest in survival, resources and power. We have found - what we believe – an additional general self-interest of organizations, namely the interest to avoid accountability and transparency. It was possible to divide the organizations intogroups with high community of interest within each group while the community between the groups was low. This provides an empirical support to Dimaggio’s and Powell’s theory which says that organizations in specific areas are similar. This means that it is possible to study the interest of organizations, without studying the individuals in an organization. We found that the owner's interests expressed in tasks, activities and objectives of the organization are important factors affecting the organization's interest structure. We also found indications - however unclear - that the public interest has an impact on the organizations' self interests. We also found an interest to protect its own market which can be related to the general interest of resource influx under Pfeffers and Salanciks theories of resource dependence.

    Abstract [en]

This study examines the way Swedish students in Upper Secondary School respond to two excerpts from a classic Swedish novel. The paper’s aim is both to give an overview over some of the theoretical concepts concerning the field of reader-response criticism, and to describe and analyse what the students experience in their first meeting with an older text. The background to my interest is the many studies showing that young readers regard reading of fiction in school as boring. By using the method of written reading responses I want to contribute to a deeper understanding of how an older text can be received, understood and engage its readers. The readers’ responses have been analysed using an analysis tool that categorises the responses under different aspects. The result shows that the older texts actually often do engage its readers in various ways, and indicates that it is the teaching method, rather than the classic text, that is viewed as “boring”. Another finding was that the specific reading response method used in this study and my own method of analysis could function as a pedagogical tool in order to understand the students’ reading act, with both its obstacles and possibilities.

Ett starkt varumärke: en otillbörlig konkurrensfördel vid privatisering?: En jämförande studie av Apoteket Shop och The Body Shop2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Purpose:  The purpose is to analyze and evaluate Apoteket Shop and The Body Shop as a brand.

Method:  This essay will have a holistic approach. The chosen theoretical approach is deductive. Qualitative methods will be used in the form of deep interviews as well as quantitative methods in the form a questionnaire survey.

Theories:  Involvement Theory, Brand, Brand Strategy, Business Concept, Planning Philosophies, Brand Service Value Chain, Total Communication

Empiric:  A total of six deep interviews with representatives from Apoteket Shop and The Body Shop. Questionnaire survey with 25 customers from each company.

Result:  The result shows that Apoteket Shop has a long–term thinking in their work but needs to work more with taking these thoughts into action. The Body Shop has also a long–term thinking which clearly shows in the way they work.

Conclusion:  The undue competitive advantages that Apoteket Shop has are the fact that they already belong to a strong and well established brand. If Apoteket Shop doesn’t work so that the structure of their organization is in tune with the strong business concept/brand, these undue advantages will only be short-term since the conditions for a long-term doesn´t exist in the organization.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to research what teachers at the leisure-time center think about the student influence and participation and how they facilitate this in the daily activities.  Previous research about influence and participation has been used to set the scene. To collect empirical data a qualitative method of interviews was used. Four interviews were made with teachers whose education and experience was quite different. The empirical findings were analyzed with the theories of children perspective, children’s perspective and Hart’s ladder of participation (1997). Children perspective and children’s perspective is used to understand if the teachers work is based on what they think is best for the students or on what the students want. The ladder of participation was used to analyze how the teachers facilitate opportunities for student to influence and participation. One finding is that the teachers think that influence and participation is important but that different factors prevent influence and participation from being a part of the everyday activities. One such factor is that group size and another is that teachers have other goals giving the students new experiences which might inhibit influence and participation. The results from the study are that the teachers think that it is important to look from the children´s perspective and to use the students’ thoughts and opinions but that the teachers more often are using the children perspective and therefore are using the teachers’ thoughts and opinions of what is right for the students rather than the students’ own opinions and feelings. Another finding is that the teachers know how to facilitate influence and participation and the positive effects from it, but that they have to work more with this perspective to fully reach its potential benefits.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose is to analyze if the students have any use of their computer education at a senior high school level or if there is a demand for them to proceed studying. Does the students background have any importance or is it their own motivation that makes the student advance to higher education.

In this report we ask ourselves the question, if the students have any use of the knowledge gained at senior high school in computer studies at a higher level. Do the students have any chance for employment based on their senior high school grades in computer studies after graduation?  Do the schools that follow the senior high school guidelines within programming and databases give these students an advantage towards those that have not received the same fundamental education?

The method used for the survey is a group questionnaire.  The questionnaire was distributed at one and the same time and then collected to examine the results. The survey results showed that students who seek work based only on their senior high school grades, received only a temporary position for different lengths of time. Computer education at a senior high school is a preparatory education for collage. Those students that have graduated from  senior high school and are keeping up to date with collage oriented subjects within the field of programming and databases, give their students an advantage when they begin reading at a more advanced level.

Vilka faktorer är viktiga för att företagens samhällsansvar ska ge långsiktig överlevnad?: En studie av tre svenska modeföretag2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to show in which way the intercultural conception is presented in schoolbooks for the Swedish senior high school used in the teaching of Swedish. My definition of the intercultural conception includes ethnicity, sexuality, class and gender. This is important to find out as the Swedish school has an important democratic commission to fulfill.

The method I used for this is a qualitative text analysis. The study covers two basic schoolbooks used in the teaching of Swedish.

The result of the study shows that the writers have good intention, for example to include people with other sexuality than heterosexuality and people with other ethnicity than Swedish. But even with the good intention there are still stereotype patterns present. The study also finds that the examined schoolbooks for the Swedish senior high school completely exclude some people from the books.

"Man får någonting från TV, liksom som en liten hjälp.": En kvalitativ forskningsstudie om Tv och barns lek2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study focuses on how the playing of children is being affected by watching TV, if it is being affected at all? Is TV consumption promoting or restraining the playing of children? Can children identify with a TV-character? The study was carried out at a school with children 6 to 8 years old. I have interviewed five children, two 6 year olds, one child of 7 and two children who are 8 years old. I recorded the interview so I could listen to it afterwards, and concentrate on the childrens body language during the interview. I observed children playing during the recess. I also gave questionnaires to the five children's parents. I wanted to know the parents opinion about the TV-habits of their children, but the questionnaires did not have any major effect on the study. I haved drawn on, and related my findings to older research, specially the work of the swedish media researcher Margareta Rönnberg.

Children's playing is a reflection of what they have experienced and what they've seen and heard both on TV and from people around them. Identity is something you have in yourself. It's who you are and how you will react in different situations. But the identity is not the same over your lifetime. It changes when you meet with new situations and encounter other people. My major conclusion is that children's playing get inspired from what they see. Children don´t only look on children's TV-shows, they look at many adult TV-shows as well, and their playing gets inspiration from it. They mix the things they found interesting on TV with things they have been through personally. Children can identify with characters from TV and recognize themselvs in them. The identification can be based on personality or on the outer likeness in special features as hair colour etc.

Notes Towards a Mental Breakdown: det teknologiska traumat i J.G. Ballards The Atrocity Exhibition2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study examinates technology's traumatic impact on the male subject in The Atrocity Exhibition by J.G. Ballard. In my analysis I show how the protagonist uses a fetischistic strategy in order to make sense of the trauma that technology embeds. Paradoxically it proves to be the agent of his trauma, but also functions as his shield. The machine is thus in a position of the hinge, the point in a structural system that both enables and deconstruct the system. In the same position we find the woman. She is the very epicentre of the novel and the violence directed towards her is part of a complex problem that I adress. The woman is divided into pieces and fetischized by the male gaze to serve as a solution for his trauma.

Hal Foster's notion ”the double logic of prosthesis” constitutes a theoretical base. The model shows how a fetischistic strategy is applied by avant-garde artists to solve the technological trauma that they experience. Both content and composition of The Atrocity Exhibition are inspired by avant-garde practices, I have therefore compared the text with Foster's theory on how the avant-garde problematized the interaction between man and machine. Marshall McLuhan's belief that the human body and technology are inseparable in the era of electronics further helps me to study technology's effect on perception.

    Abstract [en]

This study aims to investigate, describe and discuss the views of group new arrived pupils from the preparatory training to the compulsory school level. They all came to Sweden and started in the preparatory training there they also started studying Swedish as a second language. This study aims to investigate the creation of identities and how the pupils socialize in the Swedish school. The study has been conducted with respect to the pupil´s own perspectives and what they consider important.

The methods used are interviews together with an interpreter. Their voices are used and described in this paper. Their names and the school´s name have been used anonymous. One must take into consideration that there is no objective of being neutral or to generalize the results to any other group.

The pupils are convinced that second language acquisition is the key to success although their first language - the Arabic language is still symbolized as their identity. They are still working on their identities, their language acquisition and adaptation to expectations in different situations. They always will be seen as multidimensional personalities.

    Abstract [en]

Teachers' perception of equality should reflect the fiction they choose and what effect this will have in school teaching. The general aim is to investigate how reading literary text can be used as a means to influence and change students' perception of equality. Our school essay intends to answer the following questions,

    - What is the students' perception of equality?

    - How does the meeting with the fiction influence the students' perceptions of equality on the basis of culture and gender?

The method we have used in this study is a qualitative research method with group discussion as a tool. Through the impact study, we examine how students discuss and reflect about their thoughts from reading fiction. We have listened to and transcribed for the essay important details of the talks. Our theoretical connection consists of the Russian language philosopher and literary theorist, Mikhail Bakhtin, which assumes that human existence is fundamentally dialogic and argue that the individual exists and develops in communicating with other people.

Our results from group discussions show that fictions can usefully be used as an educational adjunct in school teaching to promote students' perception and understanding within a given topic. Fiction texts animate life situations and problems that make it possible for students to familiarize themselves in.

Our results of the impact study also indicates that students' perceptions can be changed through discussion around the reading. The individual reading arouses students' thoughts and understanding of both themselves as to the world that in the latter interaction with other team members demonstrate advanced abilities to highlight new knowledge. We also found examples where either explicitly confirm or deny the talks so as to develop students understanding and ability to reflect on the experience of reading in relation to reality. The results also show that talks about the reading helps students to develop an understanding of both the text's meaning as its content and purpose.

It therefore leads us into the knowledge of the text value and importance of the choice of lit erature. To allow such a practical purpose as possible with the reading of literature requires both experience and planning of the election in order to achieve the greatest possible knowledge for the students'.

Vilka känslor väcks under kulturmöten: En studie om känsloupplevelser hos invandrarelever på högstadiet2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of my study is using a narrative approach from a student perspective through the feelings that show the cultural encounters of immigrant students with the Swedish school. I want through my study have an understanding of how students are affected in their interaction with the Swedish culture. I also want to analyze and understand their feelings and experiences. Are emotions negative or positive? My theoretical framework includes the following concepts: Emotions, treatment, ethnicity, identity and code-switching.

An important element of my study is to understand students' emotional experiences. That is why i am using a qualitative research method in the form of a group discussion. The interview took place in a school in the south of Stockholm, and consisted of five students, which all had immigrated to Sweden from their previous country. Nobody was thus born in Sweden. The selection was thus based on where the students came from. The results of my study showed that students were "uncertain", "afraid" and "anxious" not to perform equally well as "Swedish”. I mean a student who has both parents with Sweden roots. Pupils' attitudes were so strong and determined that they didn’t not alter their identity. They knew where they came from and where they belong and they gave me the impression that they had a sense of "pride" at being immigrants. The students always used terms such as "we" against "them" and made permanent distinctions between "immigrant" and "Swedes”. This led the immigrant student to feel united and secure in their group and feel protected too.

My results showed that students were uncertain and didn’t dare to admit that they sometimes felt a "need" to speak good Swedish to succeed in the Swedish school. Students feel well received and no one feel different or leaving apart when the majority of the school students have a foreign descent, which means that students become one of "them" and feel integrated like one of "them.

Linjeutvidningens värde: Konsumenternas utvärdering av linjeutvidgade produkter och dess relation till prissättningen2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

A common assumption in marketing is the wider variety of product a corporation has, the better for the consumer: more product - more choices. Companies often develop a line extension to broaden consumer range through product attributes including quality, function and design. These developed attributes within the product are not always optimal for the consumer. As a result, companies often become entangled in having a price higher than the cost and benefit of the products. This essay aims to analyze the consumer value of line extension products and how these evaluations relate to extended line product pricing. A quantitative approach has been used, while data has been collected through structured questions with multiple-choice answers. Various theories concerning the products of different levels, consumer attitudes and pricing of line extension products have been assessed for this essay. The data used for survey purposes is from three different surveys in three different grocery stores. The results reveal a connection between the customer evaluation and pricing, although not as strong as initially thought. The price of organic coffee and whole meal pasta, in relation to its respective core, was relatively the same. Also, the customer evaluation of these products was equally related (See Figure 21). Generally a corporation prices products according to specific attributes. Lactose-free milk was an exception by being priced 157% higher than the other line extension products. This variation in price happens without correlation to consumers’ evaluation.

IAS 40: Värdering och redovisning av förvaltningsfastigheter2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This paper describes how teachers of media view and construct their subjects. Eight teachers have been interviewed about their views and opinions about the media environment, their goals for media education as well as their opinions about the different course plans used in media education. The term Media Literacy works as a theoretical starting point for the study, since Media Literacy is the goal for most media education. The teachers’ answers have been analyzed by using three different approaches to media education: protection, promotion and empowerment. These three approaches cannot be entirely separated from each other because they constantly interact. The results of the study show that the interviewed teachers use an empowering approach in their own goals for media education, but the protection approach dominates their reasons for educating pupils about media. However, each teacher had their own way to construct their subjects. Another conclusion drawn from the study is that more interaction between teachers and media education research would be a good way to improve the quality and development of the media education.

Effects of the copper-based antifouling paint "Fabi" on growth of the red alga Ceramium tenuicorne2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The antifouling paint Fabi 3959 is painted on the hulls of vessels to avoid fouling caused by marine organisms attached to surfaces. The paint is registered for use on pleasure boats and other vessels weighing over 200 kg which are mainly running on the Swedish west coast (www.kemi.se).

Fabi 3959 contains copper as its active component, which is highly toxic to marine organisms and thus classified as a biocide.

Fabi antifouling paint was tested under laboratory conditions on the red macro alga Ceramium tenuicorne, in natural brackish water taken from the Baltic Sea. The Ceramium growth inhibition-test was performed using cloned algae exposed to leakage water with and without sediment. The samples containing only water held concentrations in the range of 0.11% of volume-18% of volume per liter, while the samples using sediment held doses measuring between 0.11% of volume-36% of volume leakage water per liter.

The study showed a growth inhibiting effect on the Ceramium in both water and sediment samples down to the lowest concentration used in the test. There was a difference between the water series and the sediment series in the EC50 values of the leakage water. The mean EC50 value was almost 10 times lower within the sediment series compared to the water series (0.114±0.10 and 1.024±0.75, respectively). This indicates that the sediment series are more toxic to Ceramium than the water series. However, if the mean values of EC50 are expressed as copper-concentration, there is no clear difference between the two series (0.59 ± 0.13µg/l for the sediment series and 0.62 ± 0.12 µg/l for the water series). Apparently, the test did not indicate that the sediment was absorbing the copper. Instead it cannot be excluded that another substance involved could have a growth inhibiting impact on Ceramium.

Pest Management: A case study from Babati District, Tanzania2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The essay covers the subject of pest management in the developing world with focus on Africa. A small study was conducted in the Babati district in Tanzania. The division of labour is usually quite gender specific. Men have the main responsibility for cash crops while women often are responsible for the families food crops as well as household work and taking care of the children. Pest management often also falls on their lot. Yet women get very little information and education as well as gain access to important resources that could lighten their work load. Farmers generally use chemical pesticides as their main method. In the larger cash crops fields especially, farmers feel that it is too difficult to use other methods with exception for crop rotation and in some cases intercropping. In the smaller plots for family use it was however more common that other methods were used. However chemical pesticides were still used if they could be afforded. Tasks being so gender specific women have different needs than men but they are rarely asked what they need and how they perceive things. There seems to be a lot of bias and great misconceptions when it comes to the importance of women in agriculture.

"Om man vill studera och verkligen kämpar så finns det en väg för det här i Sverige": En intervjustudie om några unga nyanlända irakiers syn på möjligheter och hinder i en gymnasieskola i Södertälje kommun2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study is an investigation of newly arrived young Iraqis and their view on obstacles and opportunities available in a secondary school in Södertälje City. This is also a comparative study between the newly arrived Iraqis schooling in Iraq and in Sweden. We have used theoretical concepts such as culture, ethnicity, refugee, intercultural education, socialization and PTSD. These have helped us to provide distinct guidelines when we analyze newly arrived young Iraqis in Södertälje City. Our approach has been based on qualitative interviews with both students and teachers. We have concluded that the Iraqi students that we interviewed did not feel that there were opportunities in the Iraqi school, but obstacles did exist. However, we discovered that all students experienced a lot of opportunities and some obstacles in the Swedish school. In our final discussion, we concluded that the Swedish school should invest more time and resources for newly arrived refugees with traumatic backgrounds.

    Abstract [en]

Sweden needs a policy that stimulates economic growth. Year 1996 the Business Reorganization Act (1996:764) came into force. The goal with this law was to savebusiness, make it profitable and avoid unnecessary bankruptcies. Shortly afterwards itturned out that the law had no positive effect. A very few numbers of companies appliedfor reconstruction and the number of applications for bankruptcies continued to increase. In 2004, in order to stabilize the situation and bring about neutrality between twoproceedings, company reorganization and bankruptcy, the government proposed thereform of priority rules. The new proposition replaced the business mortgage. Accordingthe new priority rules the floating charge was limited from 100 per cent to 55 per cent. But the effect of the new reform was negative. This caused intense debates amongpoliticians and economists. The negative effects of the reform weighted more than the positive ones and in 2007 it was proposed to increase the percentage share from 55 percent to 75 percent.

On January 2009 this will be changed to 100 per cent again.Something went wrong. Why do so many companies choose to go into bankruptcy insteadof business reorganizing? Why didn’t the new priority rules work properly?

The focus of this study is to analyze the reasons why the law of business reorganization has so weak effect, why the reform of priority rules has failed.
