The Don Quixote of youth culture: media use and cultural preferences among students in Estonia and Sweden2005Book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

How should youth culture be understood in the globalised world of today? How do patterns of cultural taste develop in societies undergoing fundamental change? This book presents a comparative analysis of media use and cultural preferences among students at the University of Tartu in Estonia and at Södertörn University College in Sweden. In some respects, the patterns found in the two countries converge, in others they diverge. Explanations for this are to be found both in the present living conditions and in social norms from the past.

Use and Views of Media in Sweden & Russia: A Comparative Study in St. Petersburg & Stockholm2011Collection (editor) (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Russia’s political system has since the 1990s undergone a radical change, followed by economic and social crises in which the media system, too, has radically changed. This is in contrast to Sweden, where adaptation of media and society to global changes has taken place continuously in a context of relative economic and political stability.

This anthology presents a group of articles based on quantitative and qualitative research performed within the project “The Role of Media for Identity and Democracy”. The project involves interviews with media experts in St. Petersburg and Stockholm, analyses of the media structure and media contents, as well as comparative analyses of two age groups – 17-year-olds and middle-aged people– in the two cities.

The project aims at illustrating the interplay of society and media, on the one hand, and, on the other, people’s media use and preferences, their leisure, consumption and cultural identity, their work activities, social background and poverty-welfare, and their perceptions of societal institutions and democracy.

    Abstract [sv]

How do mainstream media communicate minority media?: A difference-theoretical study on Radio Islam and AYPA-TV2009 (ed. 1)Book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

What is necessary for minority media to be picked up on the radar of mainstream media? This report analyses Swedish media coverage of the Stockholm-based Radio Islam, and German media coverage of the Berlin-based AYPA-TV. Analysis is given from a difference-theoretical point of view, as developed by Niklas Luhmann. The case of Radio Islam, the repeatedly banned – for its broadcasts of hate – community radio station, takes its rightful place in Swedish history. It received intense media attention in the 1990s and provokes reaction even today. The second case, that of the local German-Turkish AYPA-TV, was not covered by the mainstream media to the same degree, but met the media’s criteria for being unusual. What caused these two cases to be taken on by the mainstream media?

    Abstract [sv]

Reading tabloids: tabloid newspapers and their readers2007 (ed. 1)Book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Widely read and highly controversial, tabloid newspapers are often criticized for sensationalizing, trivializing and simplifying journalism. At the heart of debates about media standards, they continue to cause concern about the impact of popular news formats on society at large. Yet, there is little research into how tabloid newspapers are viewed by their readers. Why are they popular? What do readers think about tabloid scandals and sensationalism? What is the attraction of celebrity stories? Do readers trust tabloid news coverage?

Reading Tabloids examines British tabloid newspapers from an audience perspective. Drawing on focus groups and interviews with readers of the popular tabloids the Sun and the Daily Mirror, as well as incorporating a textual analysis of the two papers, it explores how interpretations take place in an everyday inter-play between the newspapers and their readers. The book offers a new perspective on tabloid journalism, of value to those interested in the press, the news media and popular culture in contemporary society.

Mediatization of culture and everyday life2014Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The report Mediatization of Culture and Everyday Life commissioned by the sector committee Mediatization of culture and everyday life of the Riksbanken Jubileumsfond provides a comprehensive overview of current Swedish mediatization research focusing on culture and everyday life in and beyond the field of media and communication studies. Based on a broad mapping of research projects financed in Sweden that are tackling questions of media-related change, the report provides insight into a still evolving area of investigation. The two parts of the report firstly provide a discussion of the state of the art of mediatization research and a review of relevant Swedish research projects to secondly present a number of outstanding research environments engaging in research of mediatization of culture and everyday life. The report concludes with outlining topics that have been overlooked in the area so far. Especially the discussion of temporal aspects of media-related change is pointed out as a gap in current research efforts.

Symboliska platser i kunskapssamhället: internet, högre lärosäten och den gynnade geografin2008Book (Other academic)
