Sökes: lång man, liten kvinna: En studie om heterosexualitetens villkor i Gift vid första ögonkastet2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This bachelor thesis examines how terms of heterosexuality are negotiated within the Swedish reality show Gift vid första ögonkastet (Married at first sight), which is presented as a social experiment where strangers marry each other and go on to live together for four weeks. The couples are matched by four experts (two psychologists, one sexologist and one couple’s counsellor), and their roles as professionals and distributors of knowledge are the main focus of this study as it permeates how the terms are negotiated by the six participants. By applying queer theories such as the heterosexual matrix, performativity and temporality, the terms are identified as monogamy, height difference, desire, emotional labour, and equality. These are analysed using the three-dimensional model of critical discourse analysis, while also adopting its framework for ideological power to examine how the experts use their position to give way for their interpretations of relationships, love and gender.

The findings conclude that the programme works within a discourse of gender equality to support its own eligibility and does not challenge heterosexual ideals but rather furthers them by offering the heteronormative idea of monogamous love as a solution to a supposed increase of loneliness.

Kroppslig längtan: en intervjustudie om hur icke-binära kön materialiseras2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Through the concept of longing, this study aims to explore non-binary embodiment and becoming, with a focus on examining how non-binary embodiment makes and is made possible. The study takes it departure in Karen Barads theories and concepts such as intra-action, and it is also from Barad the concept of longing is inspired. Longing is understood as the drive that is and makes possible life and the livable life. Longing is not reserved for humans but is rather tangent a posthuman understanding of matters agency, where matter is understood as an active agent in its own creation. The study is based on a combination of go-along interviews and semistructured interviews with six non-binary people. The study can be understood as an effort to make possible new or other ways to understand sex/gender, embodiment and becoming. Ways that is not based on a framework of understanding that in its foundational structure reduces the non-binary as something unintelligible. In the study longing is used as a means to create order and direction in the analysis of the participants stories. Longing has the benefit of being in constant movement and change, as such it contributes as a way of understanding that do not limit the participants stories of sex/gender, embodiment and becoming.

Möjligheten att vara omöjlig: Hur 'kön' förstås och får mening i självdefinitionen hos fyra icke-binära personer2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this paper is to examine the possibility to be impossible, to examine how the socially intelligible can come to exist. This is done through the concept of sex/gender, as sex/gender has such a determining place in the production of what can be understood as human, it also has the properties to shed light on the possibility to be and exist beyond the socially intelligible. In this paper I will interview and analyze how four genderqueer people understand themselves and their identity in relation to the phenomenon sex/gender. Through Karen Barad’s concept of posthumanist performativity and her conceptualization of phenomena and intra-action I understand sex/gender, not as entities, but as phenomena of ever changing and ever intra-acting agents. The study suggests that the limitations of the concept of sex/gender can be addressed through an understanding of the body as itself a web of intra-actions, that is, the body as a phenomenon.

Speaking up, leaving or keeping silent: racialized employees in the Swedish elderly care sector2017Inngår i: Work, Employment and Society, ISSN 0950-0170, E-ISSN 1469-8722, Vol. 31, nr 6, s. 954-971Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

When encountering problems and dissatisfaction in the workplace, employees may choose between three strategies: voice; exit; or silence. Using survey data and interview material from a study of employees in an elderly care organization in Sweden, this article investigates the workers' perceptions of the eligibility and prospects of these strategies and which individual characteristics and situational factors might affect them. The focus is on racialized workers (operationalized through their region of birth) who, according to earlier studies, are less likely than other employees to choose voice behaviour. Contrary to some earlier studies, the results here attribute such a propensity to the importance of power differences across racial hierarchies' rather than to differences in cultural values. Individuals in this (racialized) category have a lower occupational status, earn less and experience less favourable relationships with their managers.

Vilken förståelse har ungdomar av våld, genus och makt?: En kvalitativ intervjustudie om elevers erfarenheter av Juventas Ungdomsjours våldsförebyggande arbete utifrån metodmaterialet ”Kärlek börjar aldrig med bråk”2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this essay is to examine students’ experiences of Juventas Ungdomsjours violence prevention work from the method material “Kärlek börjar aldrig med bråk”. This with the intention of studying students understanding of violence, gender and power and how masculinity and femininity are expressed in this understanding. The essay also intends to study how this understanding affects students view of Juventas Ungdomsjours educational strategies. My questions follow my aim. My theories are based on gender regimes in school, masculinity and femininity and change process, resistance and crisis. The method is focus group- and individual interviews and the empirical material is based on interviews with students and teachers from two schools who have taken part in Juventas Ungdomsjours violence prevention work. The results show that students understanding of violence, gender and power is based on maturity and that more perspectives should be taken because it was important to them that not only girls are subjected to violence. Masculinity and femininity are expressed in this understanding by boys’ responses are coming from a superior position and girls’ responses from a subordinate position. This understanding affects students view of Juventas Ungdomsjour educational strategies by they wish for more preparation, involvement and interaction.

Escaping the everyday: Young people's use of text messages and songs2013Inngår i: Youth Studies Australia, ISSN 1038-2569, Vol. 32, nr 2, s. 59-66Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The subject of this paper is research that explored how young people use text messages and songs stored on their mobiles and MP3 players to escape everyday life. Two separate research studies from Australia and Sweden were juxtaposed because of the similarities in findings as well as the similarity between these cultural objects. The various types of escape that were found were part of everyday routine and experienced in short bursts, such as the length of time it takes to re-read a text message or to listen to a song. However, there were also more extreme examples of these devices being used to temporarily retreat from everyday social interaction. The authors argue that these forms of escape seem to be necessary for young people to be able to maintain a “sense of being” (as defined by Heidegger in 1962) in their everyday life

Becoming fertile in the land of organic milk: Lesbian and queer reproductions of femininity and motherhood in Sweden2018Inngår i: Sexualities, ISSN 1363-4607, E-ISSN 1461-7382, Vol. 21, nr 7, s. 1021-1038Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This article draws on popular culture, ethnographic materials and mainstream commercials to discuss contemporary understandings of the relationship between fertility, pregnancy and parenthood among lesbians and other queer persons with uteruses. It argues that, on the one hand, same-sex lesbian motherhood is increasingly celebrated as evidence of Swedish gender and sexual exceptionalism and, on the other, queers who wish to challenge heteronormative gender disavow both the relationship between fertility and femininity, and that of pregnancy and parenthood. The author argues that in studying queer family formation, we must move beyond addressing heteronormativity and begin studying how gender, sexuality, race and class get reproduced in queer kinship stories.

The Geopolitics of Nordic and Russian Gender Research 1975–20052016 (oppl. 1)Bok (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This book examines how a geopolitical grammar works in Nordic and Russian academic feminism and how understandings of a joint feminist “we”, of “Nordicness” and ideas of an “East/West-Divide” shape the formation of gender research fields. In three distinct chapters, each with a different approach to theories, methods and source materials, the book explores the implications of language, translation, and situated knowledges in the development of gender research as a geopolitical area and particular academic space during the mid-1970s until 2005, and considers feminist knowledge production as a field of power relations.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this paper is to examine how women who mosh to hardcore music understand moshing as a meaning making activity and how they understand and negotiate body, gender and space in their relation to moshing. I have done a feminist phenomenological analysis on four deep interviews with women who mosh based on the theories of Sara Ahmed and Iris Young. I have found that my informants discuss moshing in terms of feelings of adrenaline, euphoria, strength and emotional ventilation. They break the norms of female bodily performance at the same time as they feel uncomfortable with how their bodies stand out in relation to the white and male bodies as a norm in hardcore spaces. The women then use how their own and other bodies that stand out as a way to access space and as a ground for resistance, both against the room as masculine and as white. The women show a clear feministic orientation and use a violent bodily performance as a feminist practice.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis is to examine how discourses on parenthood are articulated and negotiated by social workers in Sweden, in relation to handling legal parenthood after transnational surrogacy. The study is based on interviews with eight different social workers from different parts of Sweden. To interpret the material from the interviews, I use discourse theoretical framework – combined with an understanding of the social workers as street-level bureaucrats. Other particular theoretical perspectives that have been important in my research include theories on kinship, concepts of bodily and genetic citizenship and neo-liberal discourse. My study shows that different perceptions of certain key concepts (such as social-, bodily- or genetic family ties) underpin the discourses of parenthood, depending on context. In my research I have found that the process of deciding who is the legal parent of a child born through surrogacy, challenge the presumption of motherhood, and instead the genetic and intended father remains the certain parent of the child.

    Abstract [en]

This thesis explores embodied experiences of (physical and social) pain when seeking healthcare for birth injuries. This includes seeking to understand how gender, sexuality and normality can be constructed through health care for birth injuries, as well as how people with birth injuries are oriented by their pain towards getting health care. The theoretical framework is feminist phenomenological, while also incorporating the perspective of phenomenology and medicine, in order to analyze how the embodied experience of pain is conditioned by normative and cultural dimensions that structure different bodies in different ways. Different ways of understanding the emotional and sensory orientations of pain, both social and physical, are also theoretically informing the analysis. Through qualitative interviews with ten people who have been injured while giving birth within the last ten years, results show that the informants become disoriented when hearing from doctors and midwifes that their perineum, despite their experience of pain, is well. They are also disoriented when their injuries are acknowledged, but deemed untreatable. They can find their pain hard to describe, and experiences of feeling diminished difficult to react against. The embodied experience of seeking health care for birth pain can include feeling both confirmed as well as ignored in one’s injury, depending on what health care professional they happen to meet. I conclude that the frustration of seeking but not feeling like they are receiving health care for their birth injuries results in a breaking point where the patients go against feelings of shame, and (re)orient themselves towards health care by transforming into strong-willed, stubborn and un-ashamed subjects that in one way or another demand treatment and respect.

    Abstract [en]

This chapter introduces the readers to the theme of a broad range of parental movements that have emerged in contemporary Central-Eastern Europe and Russia over the past two decades. Examples of such movements include social mobilizations of conservative parental groups against legal and discursive changes that would affect gender equality in Ukraine and Russia, Czech parents opposing mandatory vaccination of children, and fathers’ groups in Poland and the Czech Republic focusing on custody rights. Parental activism is increasingly visible and influential, but it has been the subject of relatively little research to date. The aim is to rectify this by analyzing representative cases of parental movements in Central-Eastern Europe and Russia, with the hope to enrich and explain the current interpretations of social activism and civil society in the postcommunist region, which is often associated with a low level of social engagement and weak civil society, and to offer new conceptualization of mothers’ and fathers’ activism that may be applicable in other geographical contexts. The introduction to the collection of essays aims to fill a gap in the scholarship on civil society and social movements that is both empirical and theoretical, presenting an entirely new set of observations on the developments in contemporary parental activism in Central-Eastern Europe and Russia and proposing new conceptualizations of civic activism and civil society.

Rebellious parents: parental movements in central-eastern Europe and Russia2017Collection/Antologi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

Parental movements are strengthening around the world and often spark tense personal and political debate. With an emphasis on Russia and Central and Eastern Europe, this collection analyzes formal organizations as well as informal networks and online platforms which mobilize parents to advocate for change on a grassroots level. In doing so, the work collected here explores the interactions between the politics, everyday life, and social activism of mothers and fathers. From fathers’ rights movements to natural childbirth to vaccination debates, these essays provide new insight into the identities and strategies applied by these movements as they confront local ideals of gender and family with global ideologies. “This is an excellent collection with conceptual and methodological unity and high quality contributions that are thoroughly researched.... The work makes a real contribution to the field (both theoretically and empirically), challenges stereotypes, and presents new areas of valuable research.” — Nanette Funk, coeditor of Gender Politics and Post-Communism: Reflections from Eastern Europe and the Former Soviet Union “We see here evidence of engaged citizens, not directly challenging political leaders about broad economic or political policies, but seeking to change public atti¬tudes to vital issues facing people in their everyday lives as parents. ...This is very much a contribution to scholarship and knowledge. We just don’t know about this type of activism.” —David Ost, author of The Defeat of Solidarity: Anger and Politics in Postcommunist Europe

    Abstract [en]

This chapter examines the work of the Commission for the Improvement of the Work and Everyday Life of Women (KUTBZh), focusing on the intersection of Soviet policies on women’s emancipation with the politics of emancipation of nations, starting with those who were classified before 1917 as inorodtsy. The chapter examines in particular detail the work of KUTBZh in the Volga-Urals region. KUTBZh held a very unstable position, vacillating between the role of offering choices and new opportunities for women and serving as a state-directed vehicle for forced Sovietisation. As time went by, it was the latter role that dominated. © The Author(s) 2018.

Soviet politics of emancipation of ethnic minority woman: Natsionalka2018Bok (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

This book provides a new perspective through a closer look on "Other", i.e. ethnic minority women defined by the Soviet documents as natsionalka. Applying decolonial theory and critical race and whiteness studies, the book analyzes archive documents, early Soviet films and mass publications in order to explore how the "emancipation" and "culturalization" of women of "culturally backward nations" was practiced and presented for the mass Soviet audience. Whilst the special focus of the book lies in the region between the Volga and the Urals (and Muslim women of the Central Eurasia), the Soviet emancipation practices are presented in the broader context of gendered politics of modernization in the beginning of the 20th century. The analysis of the Soviet documents of the 1920s-1930s not only subverts the Soviet story on "generous help" with emancipation of natsionalka through uncovering its imperial/colonial aspects, but also makes an important contribution to the studies of imperial domination and colonial politics. Abstract [en]

Gender matters in global politics. After the US elections, we know this better than ever: the mass appeal of Trump’s blatant misogyny is just a part of the problem. Populism in the US and elsewhere feeds not only on economic instability and fear, but also on anxieties around gender relations, (homo)sexuality and reproduction. In country after country, critiques of what conservatives (especially Catholics) term “gender” or “genderism” – gender equality policies, sex education, LGBTQ and reproductive rights – have helped to mobilize men as well as women, paving the way for populist leaders. This article argues that while opposition to feminism and gender equality policies is not new, the current upsurge marks a departure from the previous neoconservative paradigm: social conservatism is now explicitly linked to hostility towards global capital.

Reproducing Politics: The politicisation of patients' identities and assisted reproduction in Poland and Sweden2016Inngår i: Sociology of Health and Illness, ISSN 0141-9889, E-ISSN 1467-9566, Vol. 38, nr 7, s. 1074-1091Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This article examines how discourses on assisted reproductive technologies are locally appropriated, translated or contested in the specific cultural and political contexts of Poland and Sweden. The aim is to investigate how two national patients' organisations, namely the Polish association Nasz Bocian and the Swedish organisation Barnlängtan, articulate rights claims in the context of reproductive technologies. To this end, we investigate how these organisations utilise specific context-dependent and affectively laden political vocabularies in order to mobilise politically, and discuss how each of these two groups gives rise to a different set of politicised reproductive identities. In order to trace which political vocabularies the respective organisations utilise to mobilise their respective rights claims, we draw primarily on political discourse theory and concepts of political grammars and empty signifiers. Lastly, we discuss which political reproductive identities emerge as a result of these different versions of political mobilisation around assisted reproductive technologies.

"När jag var liten identifierade jag mig alltid med Lilla My...": Femininitetsideal bland första och andra generationens sverigefinska kvinnor2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this paper is to explore femininity ideals associated with being Finnish and Swedish and what impact these ideals have on first and second generation Finnish immigrants residing in Sweden. Further it is explored how masculinity ideals associated with Finnishness and prejudice against the two nationalities shape the women’s identities. This is done with an intersectional perspective and understood through theories of respectability and critical femininity studies. Interviews conducted with four women, two born in Finland and two born in Sweden, are analyzed with the help of discursive psychology, focusing on how they perceive themselves and others. The results show that first and second generation Finnish women relate to these ideals differently. First generation Finnish women are more likely to idealize Finnish femininity ideals, whereas second generation Finnish women are more affected by Swedish femininity ideals. The analysis also shows that the women were more likely to discuss ideals associated with Finnishness during the interviews, the Finnish ideals being understood as differing from the Swedish norm.
