    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Internet has opened a whole new world when it comes to marketing. Because of this companies can reach out to a broader consumer audience. The idea to write this essay came to mind, when we were asked to design the website of a new registered company named Artoteket. The company’s purpose is to hire out and market art on the Internet to bigger companies such as banks, law firms and industrial company’s etc. We were curious if Artotekets potential clients were interested in using the service that Artoteket offers. For this study we have interviewed ten companies that Artoteket sees as potential clients. By examining Internet and finding information about how art has been marketed before, we can draw new conclusions about art and the positive and negative aspects with marketing art on the Internet.

The purpose with this essay was to explore what possibilities Artoteket has to hire out and market art on the Internet.

Our conclusion is that; Artoteket has potential clients among the interviewed companies. Artoteket has good possibilities to establish themselves as a well-known brand on the market, because the company has great knowledge in marketing. We believe that Artoteket will gain even more clients in the future if they also create a brochure/catalogue as a complement to the website.

    Abstract [en]

The goal of this bachelor thesis is to explain how computer game graphic artists at the game company Digital Illusions(Dice) has changed during the last six years. To give this question a background the essay describes how the computer game process works and it also describes the working roles for the peoples in the process. Further the thesis describes the changes for the computer game graphic artist and the reasons for this change. When it comes to Digital Illusions the thesis focus on the game Battlefield 1942. The work began with telephone interviews with game artists at the largest game company’s in Sweden, witch gave us indications of the fact that the status and the influence of the production of the game for the game artists had been ascending during the last six years. We therefore wanted to find out the reasons for this change, as well as finding one single game to study. We therefore interviewed three of the responsible computer game artists for the game Battlefield 1942. We also went to the computer game education Playground Squad in Falun for two days of interviews and observations. We concluded that the computer game graphic artists had increased during the last six years primarily caused by the fact that computer game graphics more and more had been used as means of marketing and the fact that the knowledge and the making use of editors among the artists has increased.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay has been to investigate what the characteristics are for the subject Mediatecnique (medieteknik) that is held by Södertörns högskola, by using the term högskolemässighet1. The purpose is also to work out a number of criterias, that will make it possible to analyse högskolemässigheten within the subject. Our questions has been: Is Mediatecnique högskolemässig according to our criterias? and How can högskolemässigheten be increased? We carried out this investigation by working out a number of criterias for högskolemässighet. These criterias are based on a report published by The National Agency for Higher Education; “Ribban på rätt nivå – sju inlägg om högskolemässighet” , an essay written by Ingrid Widäng; ”’Högskolemässighet’ Karakteristika för utbildning och undervisning vid högskola och universitet – ur ett lärarperspektiv” and The National Agency for Higher Educations qualityaspects. What seems to be the four top characteristics are the degree of researchconnection, the degree of scientific approach, the students opportunities to develop a critical thinking and their ability to measure their knowledge towards others. Our criterias are: Research connection, Theory and Practice, Selfstudy and Critical thinking, Infrastructure, Internationalization, and Evaluations. By studying documents such as schedules, bibliography and curriculum and by asking questions by e-mail to the person responsible for Mediatecnique we have been investigating how högskolemässigheten is expressed within these categories. Högskolemässigheten varies within and between these categories. The researchconnection is low. If you would judge Mediatecnique only by this criteria it would not live up to the demand on högskolemässighet. But if you consider all criterias you can say that Mediatecnique is högskolemässig. Our conclusion is that the ones responsible for the subject should strengthen högskolemässigheten by increasing the researchconnection and give more room to discussions between teachers and students.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

We travel more to day than we have ever done before and there is an abundance of destinations to choose from. All -destinations have vantages and disadvantages and the things that are favourable for one traveller can be the opposite for another. So the questions are, why do we have different opinions about the same destination and what is it that makes us choose one destination before another?

The purpose with this thesis is to investigate if the demographic factor age has an influence on the Swedish traveller’s opinion about winter destinations. The thesis also investigates if there is a link between the traveller’s demography and their opinion of a destination. As an example the authors decide to make a comparison between the Alps and the Swedish mountains

The thesis is built on two primary source, a questionnaire study and interviews. The secondary source is literature and scientific articles concerning tourism, geography and marketing. It is also based on the homepages of Skistar and the ski lift organization.

The result shows that there is a deferens in the opinions between the Alps and the Swedish mountains, due to the demographic factor age. People have different needs because of their demographics. Income and children can have an influence on their opinions and priorities. It doesn’t mean that you have children or a high wage just because you are in a certain age. But age, income and family can place people in different social-classes, where they share the same opinions and values about a destination.

Datorprogram i skolmiljö: en utvald grundskola som fallstudie2005Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

In this thesis I'm trying to investigate how good educational computer programs work in elementary school. I delimited the study to contain one elementary school in the stages of 6 to 9. The method I used was qualitative and the approach was inductive. I interviewed four teachers and five pupils as the way to collect data for the study. The theories I used were parts from different books with authors, which have done similar studies and researches. I also used the elementary school course documentations as theories.

From this study I can tell that the selected school's programs are best suited for background information. The programs are not as good for deeper knowledge. The motivation gets better among pupils when using the programs. The programs for mathematic follow their course documentation better than the programs for the social-oriented subjects do. The interviewed teachers and pupils want more programs, and the ability to use the programs fully (which aren?t possibly today due to some circumstances). This study may be continued in the future to include other schools in Sweden.

Gränssnittsdesign: kvalitativ och kvantitativ utvärdering av FöreningsSparbankens hemsida2003Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This essay concerns medical- and dental tourism. The main purpose with the essay was to study which factors that affects Swedish choices to seek medical- and dental care abroad and therefore reach an understanding for Swedish medical- and dental tourism to other countries. The aim has also been to try to reach an insight in how Swedish medical- and dental tourism might develop the future. The study is based on qualitative interviews with five officials who were well-grounded in the field. The theoretical framework concerned the need of travel, push- and pull factors, Maslow’s hierarchy of needs and the thinking about needs within business activities. We found out that both factors within and outside Sweden influence the choice to seek care abroad. Significant push factors are disadvantages within the Swedish medical- and dental system, especially long waiting periods and high costs but also insufficient service. Important pull factors are security and cultural similarities but also service and marketing. All of the interviewed officials believe that medical- and dental tourism will increase in the future.

Perspectives on digital divide: Internet usage and attitudes in Arusha, Tanzania, a minor field study2005Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

This paper outlines the current situation of Internet usage and attitudes towards the Internet among ordinary people in Arusha, Tanzania, and examines the views of ordinary citizens on the effects of the arrival of Internet and the possible digital divide.

Using qualitative interviews with equal groups of ordinary Internet users and ordinary non- Internet users in Arusha, the authors found varying levels of awareness about Internet services and facilities and their availability. There was also a widespread concern about immoral western influences communicated by the Internet and how it may affect the domestic culture. It was clearly shown that Internet usage and the possibility to utilize the information found is dependent on education levels and the economic situation of the users, two closely related factors. To get additional views on the subject interviews were also carried out with representatives for Radio and TV stations as well as newspapers located in Arusha, institutions for higher education in the ICT field, Internet providers, and Arusha Municipal Council. To examine the actual Internet usage we extracted random samples of visited websites in several of the Internet cafés, which most of the Arushans use to access the Internet.

It was found that government action is necessary that the in order to bridge the digital divide, but as a result of systematic censorship of media government efforts meet a profound distrust among people, neither does the government consider this to be any of their responsibilities.

SMS i TV: ett sätt att skapa interaktion i TV?2002Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose with this essay is to examine the phenomenon SMS in TV. Partly by identify the communication process behind the phenomenon and partly by describing it in a editorial and technical point of view. We have analysed the communication process regarding scientific theories in communication, interaction and convergence. With a qualitive approach we have fulfilled four interviews and two small ethnographical field observations. Objects for the interviews and observations have been two Swedish produced debate-programs, broadcasted in TV; Diskus in TV4 and Debatt in SVT2. Our conclusions shows that the phenomenon SMS in TV provides the traditional one-way communicative medium TV a new opportunity to create a feedback-channel between the TV-viewer and the TV-producer. The main purpose with SMS in TV from a TV-producers point of view is to let the TV-viewer have the possibility to send a SMS-message with his or her thoughts or questions to the TV-producer and by that affect the TV-program. Our conclusions also describes how the phenomenon is used in a editorial way and how it’s produced and used in a technical point of view. Further discussions are made regarding problems connected to the phenomenon and it’s future possibilities.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose with this case study is to find out what a good hands-on-artifact made for museums is and how it should be designed. The study is made at the Marvels of the human body located at the Swedish museum of Natural history. The empirical material has been collected trough short interviews and observations with visitors at the museum and extended interviews with people working in the field. The results have then been analyzed individually but also together, after this the results have been categorized. The conclusion of this study showed that there is a lot of aspect to have in mind when creating interactive stations, one of the most important aspects is distinctiveness about the purpose of the station and how it should be carried out.

Sveriges Radio - Public Service: Den digitala vägen till nya användare2006Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 points / 15 hpStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this report was to study how the Swedish radio channel Sveriges Radio (SR) website changed over time. What are the differences between various media websites? How many people listen to normal and web-radio and what are the differences between the various services offered on the SR website?

Reports from the BBC, Statistics Sweden, Mediavision and the Swedish National Post and Telecom Agency were compared. Several theoreticians have been studied, including Donald A Norman, Jonas Löwgren, Karen Holtzbratt, Jacob Nielsen and Geoffrey Moore.

The method used by the author comprised a systematic mapping of statistics from webTrends, KiaIndex, SiteCensus, TNS Gallup/K2analys and reports from RUAB. The data studied have been collected from telephone interviews, postal surveys, internet panels, and from log files. The statistics have then been compared and in some cases tables have been cross-correlated.

The results from the various studies showed that SR is following the rising trend displayed by a few of the media websites reviewed. It is of particular interest to note that web-radio listening between the final period 2004 and 2005 almost doubled.

The next stage will be to offer the listener/user a more central position. By listening to users, and above all non-users, the function and content can be adapted to the larger group of pragmatists and conservative listeners that are looking for sustainable and convenient solutions.

On demandradio, nya lyssnarmönster: En c-uppsats om radio när man vill2005Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 points / 15 hpStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of the thesis is to study if new radio listening patterns have been created since Swedish public radio Sveriges Radio (SR) began offering radio repeats on demand via its website.

Communication theories written by John Fiske have been used and theories by Walter Benjamin concerning how things change when reproduced. Marshall McLuhan and Tony Schwartz historic theories have also been utilized.

The method used has been divided into three sections, where a comparison has been made between various secondary data from SR, Radioundersökningar AB (RUAB), the Nordic Information Center for Media and Communication Research (NORDICOM), the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) and Radio Joint Audience Research Limited (RAJAR). Quantitative data was collected via a questionnaire that was published on the SR website and through emailing the questionnaire to a reference group. The authors have carried out 35-45 minute telephone interviews which were recorded and partly transcribed to collect more qualitative data.

Results from the questionnaires and interviews suggest that listeners to on demand radio services use a new, more active way of listening to the radio. People listen to on demand radio when they have time, listen when they have missed something in a programme, or choose to listen to a programme again.

It is however difficult to see if the time for listening has changed, but the time for listening to radio programmes that require more concentration seems to have moved to evenings, and when listeners have an available “window” for concentrated on demand radio listening. It is nevertheless clear from the BBC figures and the growth in on demand radio listening at the BBC that this growth is also likely to take place in Sweden once the public becomes more aware of the availability of this service.

Kundrelationer via digitala medier2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 points / 15 hpStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This study explores the relatively new phenomenon of online poker. More specifically, it elaborates on who the online poker player is, why s/he plays online poker, what the fascination of the game is, why s/he continues to play, and what the experience is. The study is delimited to focus on individuals who mainly play Texas hold’em online. The empirical material is based on semi-structured interviews with active online poker players, as well as on secondary data such as articles and literature. Both professional and amateur players are included among the respondents. The material has been coded and qualitatively analyzed. Earlier studies in the same field have also been brought to light and discussed, among which we especially centered on Reith’s theories about gambling and the gambler. Finally, the study concludes that the four factors primarily motivating the online poker player are excitement, money, social interaction, and the aspect of skill.

    Abstract [en]

Museums are commonly viewed as uninteresting and boring environments where old and dusty objects are on display, an opinion that museums are struggling to change. Today’s increasing competition from other cultural and leisure facilities put further pressure on museums to renew themselves. This indicates that museums today face great challenges in their work and a professional approach regarding marketing is necessary.

So how do museums market their exhibitions and activities? What differences are there between the museums ways of working with marketing? In this essay the writers take a closer look at four museums in Stockholm, Sweden.

The aim is to examine how the chosen museums work with marketing and compare the findings with each other. The results show that the museums implement recommended marketing strategies to a certain extent. Taken together, in order to develop exhibitions that meet the customers’ needs and wishes, museums need to study and involve their customers to a greater extent than is done today.

    Abstract [en]

The development and marketing of a destination can contribute with benefits such as employment growth and infrastructural improvements. At the same time, uncontrolled exploitation can have the reverse effect and work negatively on sensible cultural- and natural environments. Knowledge about these effects has, in discussions and literature about destination development, led to the dominating roll of the perspective of planning. Meanwhile there are other important factors to consider when looking to the big spectra. In this context collaboration, networking and destination marketing becomes significant aspects to review. With a focus on, and theoretical preunderstanding for, these concepts this thesis will focus on the two case-studies of Ornö and Utö, two neighbouring islands in the archipelago of Stockholm, Sweden. In spite of their physical similarity the two islands have undergone very different developments as tourism destinations. The purpose with this thesis will therefore be to determine how the concepts of collaboration, network and destination marketing have influenced the development of the islands.

    Abstract [en]

This C-level thesis deals with Russian tourism in Sweden and explains what measures are being used in Sweden in order to attract Russian tourists. Since a high number of companies and organizations are actively involved in developing Russian tourism to Sweden, we have decided to focus primarily on the most active Swedish and Russian companies within the industry. Therefore several big and well-established companies, often located in the largest cities of Russia and Sweden i.e. Stockholm, Moscow and St Petersburg, have been the subject of our analysis.

Chapter “Bakgrund” presents numerous facts and information about the nature and scale of the Russian tourist market today and in the nearest future. The reader will get a chance to take a closer look at the changes that have happened in the Russian society contributing significantly to the fast development of the tourism industry.

In chapter “Metod” the methodology applied during the research, analysis and drawing conclusions is described. Our choices are discussed and motivated as well as key terms and concepts are defined.

The theoretical framework of the thesis consists of selected theories. The theories used include among others such concepts as push- and pull factors, classifications of tourists and Butler sequence model (Resort Life Cycle Model).

The theoretical framework follows of our empirical research, which includes documentation of our interviews with chosen companies and organizations along with analysis of existing publications and sources within the field. The interviewed and analyzed subjects were Visit Sweden, Stockholm Visitors Board, Junibacken, Vasa Museum and several larger Russian travel agencies i.e. Federal Tourism Agency of Russian Federation. Also an own survey between the immediate consumers of the Swedish tourist offers was covered by our research and will be summarized in this chapter.

The analytical part of the work consists of discussing the information gathered through the different channels. The analysis is carried out in the light of the applicable theories and models. The conclusions are drawn about the existing situation and an attempt is made to create several future scenarios describing possible development of the Russian-Swedish tourism exchange.

Finally a criticism of the sources and a review all references used in the thesis are carried out.

I inneslutande VR: En kvalitativ undersökning om användares närvarokänsla första gången de befinner sig i en virtuell miljö.2006Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 points / 30 hpStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This essay covers computer gaming as seen from a perspective of gender theory. The main purpose of the essay is to examine women’s relationship to computer games, and more specifically women’s attitudes to the games they play. The theoretical basis for this essay is sprung from a hermeneutic perspective. The empirical basis for analysis consists of two in depth interviews and game analysis of the two computer games Counter Strike and Final Fantasy XI. The theories and previous research we have taken in consideration discuss topics like computer usage, gender studies, identity, identification, cyborg theory, subculture, fanculture and narration. This essay has shown that the two computer games contain multiple gender related and theory relevant connotations. The aspects of the games the informants consider important in the identification process mainly consist of game related communion and the interaction with other players. Both informants have presented several views on what they find important in the process of identification and what they chose to discard.

SERVQUAL: ett lämpligt mätinstrument av upplevd tjänstekvalitet inom reseindustrin?2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 points / 15 hpStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The travel agencies exist on a market that is distinguished by increasing competition. A majority of the travel agencies offer different services that all satisfie the same customer need. However,

one major difference in the market aspect is the service quality, this making it an important mean of competition. There are several acknowledged methods of measurement when it comes to service quality and it is important to use an instrument that takes into consideration the fact that charter tours is a complex merger of several services. The purpose of this essay is to establish if the SERVQUAL method is a suitable instrument for measuring service quality in the travel

industry. This study is a thorough analysis and evaluation of what Apollo’s customers think about the service quality of Apollo as well as how they perceive that Apollo fulfils their travelling

expectations. Moreover, the essay will examine which factors affect travellers’ experiences of the service quality on charter tours. The study has an objective outlook and the authors have applied a deductive approach. The authors have performed a quantitative study on 70 of Apollo’s customers. The aforementioned study was carried out using a questionnaire that was based on the

SERVQUAL method and the theories that were used in the theoretical part of that study.

The result show that the SERVQUAL method only considered the aspects that involve the travel agency and did not consider the other aspects that affect the traveller’s overall experience of the

service quality. In conclusion this study determines that the SERVQUAL method is not a suitable instrument for measuring service quality on charter tours in the travel industry.

    Abstract [en]

    Abstract [en]

Design education is taking on new forms at many universities around the world, since many people see that a designer today works in many different contexts with many different materials. In Europe, the Bologna reform of higher education is therefore timely. It offers a possibility to reflect and restructure design curricula for the changing world of design. In this paper we outline the development of a Bologna style curriculum for a Master of Science (two years) with a Major in Design at Linköpings universitet in Sweden. The Master's Programme in Design is multidisciplinary, and the guiding principle is that a designer of tomorrow will work less with specific materials and more within differing design contexts. A problem we faced with the studio classes was how to define progression. In order to structure the progression we identified a set of core competences for designers. These competences are used to define areas within which learning outcomes can be defined. The competence fields are; Vision & concept, Design methods, Tools & materials, User & actor perspective, Versatility, Design theory & research and Continuous competency development. Our conclusion is progression in studio classes can be structured in relation to these fields.

Hållbar destinationsutveckling: En fallstudie av Ürgüp, Turkiet2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 points / 15 hpStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This bachelor thesis concerns a region in central Turkey – Cappadocia - and its need of a sustainable tourism development. A town called Ürgüp is located in the centre of this region, which mainly consist of a rich geographic, cultural and historic access. Our focus in this essay will be concerning Ürgüp and the importance of a sustainable tourism development. Our intensions are to examine what Ürgüp has to offer as a tourist locality and how Ürgüp can maximise its visitors through a sustainable development. We also examine how the locality can be developed in a tourist perspective. Finally, are we interested in conducting a discussion about how an increased tourism flow could affect a city like Ürgüp and its inhabitants.Qualitative methods is behind the decisions of our empirical examines. Our selection of interview respondents was done in a systematic way and our data is collected from primary as well as secondary sources - such as interviews, literature, Internet sources and research articles. We have used four different theories which aim to give answers to the questions we are concerning. The empirical collected material consists of three different interview respondents who explains the existing situation and how a sustainable development can have an effect on Ürgüp. The material also handle examines which explains the importance of sustainable development and maintenance of the towns historical and cultural inheritance. The empirical text also examines Ürgüps tourism access and the most effective way to a sustainable development. In the analytic session, we discuss the theoretical models applied on the empirical material. The discussion illuminates our question at issue and how Ürgüp can be developed in a sustainable way. The analytic session helped us to give a legible structure over the assignment and tie it up for a conclusion. The conclusion provides us with an answer to our problems and re-establishes a connection between theories and empirical facts. The answers to our questions leads to an conclusion that Ürgüp has much to offer as a touristy locality but needs further sustainable develop in order to reach a sustainable balance with an acceptable carrying capacity.Activities and the well-protected heritage with opportunities to different accommodations open up for big development possibilities for the town such as increased activities and better accessibility for the tourists.Today, Ürgüp does not amount to their full capacity and a increasing tourism can only be made if they can solve their problems which have resulted in a relatively low amount of visitors. This can be solved with better marketing, development of the already existing accesses, common aims for the whole locality and an increased communication between inhabitants and tourists. The tourism industry affects the locality in both positive and negative ways. The negative factors can be reduced trough a closer co-operation between tourists and inhabitants and trough increased information about the positive affects of tourism in the region. The tourism industry has helped to improved the modernisation and development of the town and at the same time increased the social, economic and geographical situation for the inhabitants.

A case study of how user interface sketches, scenarios and computer prototypes structure stakeholder meetings: Proceedings of HCI 2007: The 21st British HCI Group Annual Conference2007In: People and Computers XXI: HCI-- but not as we know it : proceedings of HCI 2007, the 21st British HCI Group annual conference, University of Lancaster, UK, 3-7 September 2007, Swindon: British Computer Society (BCS), 2007, p. -9Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In stakeholder meetings during an interaction design project, prototypes are commonly used for creating shared representations of design ideas. It can, however, be difficult for designers and meeting facilitators to know which prototyping technique to use. In this case study we compare user interface sketches, scenarios, and computer prototypes, and analyse video material from six stakeholder meetings. The scenario did not facilitate a focus on aesthetic or ethical perspectives, nor did it facilitate operational or perceptual issues. The prototype did not facilitate discussions on the overarching concept of the design, to the same extent as the sketches did, but it did facilitate operational issues. The sketches gave the broadest discussion. The groups also approached the design differently; for example, the system developers constantly returned to a constructional perspective. This means that the choice of prototyping technique should be made based on the composition of the group and the desired focus of the meeting. © 2007 Maria Johansson, Mattias Arvola.
