Reportern som ett verktyg för att belysa de andra: Narratologiska konsekvenser av den journalistiska ögonvittnespositionen2015In: Tidskrift för litteraturvetenskap, ISSN 1104-0556, E-ISSN 2001-094X, no 1, 5-16 p.Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

A reportage is the reporter's story about reality. Even though it details real events, it always presentsa personal interpretation of these events. In contrast to the news article, which primarilyinforms readers, a reportage involves a pronounced degree of personal narration. Normally it is based on the reporter's role as an eyewitness. This essay discusses how the position of the eyewitness establishes narratological structures inthe text, which seem to differ from the structures present in other kinds of non-fiction narrativestold in the first person. For instance, in reading an autobiography, a reader's empathy willbe drawn toward the main character. By contrast, a reportage will direct the reader's empathyaway from the reporter and towards the other. The narratological construction of a reportage may be studied as an interplay between threeinstances: the experiencing reporter, the narrating reporter and the director (the implied reporter). Thus, a three-part model may be utilised in order to help explain, for example, how ahomodiegetic narrator can be combined with external focalisation, and how a character otherthan the experiencing reporter can be internally focalised. It can also illuminate how the textmay employ a form of dissonance between the experiencing and the narrating reporter to serve ajournalistic purpose (displacing the perspective from person – the reporter – to subject-matter).

A Narratological Approach to Literary Journalism: How an Interplay between Voice and Point of View May Create Empathy with the Other2016In: Literary Journalism Studies, ISSN 1944-897X, E-ISSN 1944-8988, Vol. 8, no 1, 106-139 p.Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this essay is to present a model for analyzing the in- terplay between voice and point of view in literary journalism/reportage. The model can be used to nuance previous researchers’ discussions about “subjective” and “objective” journalism. It also problematizes the reporter’s special role as an eyewitness by highlighting how narrative techniques can create empathy with the Other and move the reader’s gaze away from the reporter, away from the one who is witnessing. Using tools from classical narratology, I focus on the form of the texts. The tools help me investigate the narrator’s as well as the characters’ subjectivity and interpret the narra- tive’s construction as an expression of a journalistic mission. I systematize variables such as the narrator’s visibility, the relation between an experienc- ing reporter and a narrating reporter, the interplay between the experienc- ing reporter and other characters in the text, and in what way a level with a director (an implied author) can facilitate a comparison between vari- ous kinds of literary journalism. I also examine whether it might be time to abandon the theory that a first-person reportage is more subjective in general than a third-person reportage. I explore whether it is instead the narrator’s visibility that determines the position of the text on a scale be- tween “subjective” and “objective” forms. (Note: I have provided a glossary of terms at the end of the essay.)

CSR, receptet för en lyckad M&A transaktion?: En kvantitativ studie om hur effekterna av företagens sociala ansvar påverkar M&A transaktioner2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine whether the awareness of social- and environmental factors could be beneficial within M&A transactions in such that companies tend to obtain a higher success in such transactions if they are aware of these factors. The study also examines whether the actual return by the event date strikes higher for the social- and environmental aware companies than the unaware companies, where the event date is when the M&A transaction was due.

Method: The authors have chosen to use two different methods; the Event Study- and Panel Study methods. The event window consists of five days before- and five days after the due date of the M&A, which makes it a total of 11 days. The estimation window is based on the 30 days before the event window and is examined in order to obtain an expected return of which is not affected by the event. The sample is based on international, Swedish companies which has undergone a M&A with a non- Swedish company, and is connected to the UN’s initiative Global Compact.

Theory: The authors have chosen to apply the Efficient Market Hypothesis and besides that, a developed model based on a current one, the Merger Management Model. The difference between the models is that the Merger Management Model is based on tangible factors whereas the developed model, Social and Environmental Merger Management Model, is based on intangible factors. The chapter starts with the Efficient Market Hypothesis and then continues with the Merger Management Model and an explanation of the social- and environmental factors. The chapter ends with an explanation of the factors’ impact on companies and culminates onto the developed model.

Conclusion: The outcome shows that companies of which are aware of social- and environmental risks, have incentives to a higher success rate in M&A transactions than companies that are unaware of these risks. The results of the hypothesis test made in this study strengthens the conclusion since the outcome of the p-value almost reached 64 percent, which means that there most likely is a correlation between the companies’ awareness of the social- and environmental factors and their success in M&A transactions.

Procedural Fairness and Political Trust Among Young People: Lessons from a panel study on Swedish High School Students2015In: Acta Politica, ISSN 0001-6810, E-ISSN 1741-1416, Vol. 50, no 3, 253-278 p.Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The role of ‘fair’ institutions in developing democratic legitimacy has received increased attention. Citizens who perceive – on basis of past experiences – that they are being treated fairly by authorities have been held to have greater trust in political institutions. However, previous studies on the relationship between procedural fairness and political trust have not paid sufficient attention to individuals with limited first-hand experiences of authorities. We examine the relationship on an authority that virtually all individuals meet early in life: the school. Using structural equation modeling on unique panel data covering 1500 Swedish adolescents (ages ranging from 13 to 17), we find a reciprocal relationship: personal encounters with school authorities shape young people’s political trust; however, the images that adolescents get of the political system (through family, peers, media and so on) have also consequences on their perceptions about the authorities they encounter in their daily lives. The analysis increases our understanding of how individuals form their political allegiances by showing that the relationship between fairness and trust is more dynamic than has previously been suggested: neither an accumulated set of experiences of authorities nor formal ties with political institutions (as voters and so on) are required for a relationship to emerge.

Ledarskap i den kreativa processen: En studie om små dataspelsföretag2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Title: Leadership in the creative process: A study about small computer game companies.

Problem: Currently there is a lack of studies that focus on different leadership perspectives effect on creativity within groups. There is a lack of information about how leadership shapes and the leadership’s role in the creative process, especially in creative intensive industries. A big part of previous research focuses on countries like USA and Japan, but not Sweden. The computer game industry is a fast changing industry, therefore there are many challenges and business opportunities that organizations might lack knowledge about.

Purpose: The purpose of this essay is to gain an understanding for what leadership in the creative process in small computer game companies look like. At the same time we want contribute knowledge and understanding about the leadership's influence on the creative process.

Method: The study is based on a interpretive social science perspective with a qualitative research strategy. A phenomenological approach has been used to capture the respondent's’ experience of leadership in the creative process in the computer game industry with the help of semi structured interviews. The research approach was abductive due to the researchers constantly going between data and known theories when searching after the most probable explanations. During processing of data a phenomenographic data analysis model was used.

Conclusion: Different leadership perspectives work differently under different circumstances. According to the theoretical framework leadership theories does not necessarily exclude one from another, rather aspects from different leadership theories are combinable. Since there are many kinds of computer game companies it is imperative to understand one’s own organization and to be open to pick aspects from different leadership theories to tailor a leadership perspective that fits the organization's context.

Inget vågat, inget vunnet: En kvantitativ studie om skillnader i riskbenägenhet mellan män och kvinnor utifrån demografiska faktorer och geografiska områden2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Problem: This study aims to examine the factors that influence the individual's different choice of risk level. Demographic characteristics are the underlying factors being analyzed in the study with a special emphasis on geographic factors – this in order to analyze and explain the Swedish individual’s approach to risk. Based on certified private advisers’ perspective, the study will also examine their approach to manage individuals’ risk.

Purpose: Studying the differences in risk aversion among individuals when making investment decisions, based on demographic factors and geographical areas.

Theory: The essay’s theoretical framework deals with theories covering behavioral finance, the risk appetite development in individuals at a demographic and geographic way, and an overview of previous research on the subject.

Method: We conducted a quantitative study in which 340 respondents were asked to answer a survey. We also interviewed three certified counselors from three different banks in Sweden.

Conclusions: In line with behavioral finance theory, people are not rational when making investment decisions. The study concludes that people in big cities tend to be more risk-averse than people in smaller cities. Sex is shown to be a differentiating factor with men having a higher risk-aversion than women. A higher income and level of education leads to a higher risk attitude and marital status affects the risk appetite where a married person has a higher risk appetite than a person who is single. Age and education, showed to have no relationship to the level of risk.

Den digitala generationen: En surveyundersökning om ungdomars nyhetsvanor och förtroende för medier2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This is a quantitative survey of young people's news habits and trust in media. Our main points mainly concern how and how often young people consume news, and what confidence they have in different news sources. The result shows that half of the 126 respondents are consuming news every day. Social media is the respondents main source of news, and they think it's easiest to get news from there. At the same time, it appears that the surveyed people have low confidence in social media as a news source, compared to traditional media such as television, radio and newspapers, that only a few of the respondents use as main sources for news. We discuss how this outcome may affect journalism in the future, as the new generation of media- and news-consumers choose new media in front of traditional ones.

    Abstract [en]

Purpose: Venture Capital has been of big importance for new ventures in high technology industries, but has decreased markedly in numbers since the end of the”dot-com” bubble. The main purpose of this thesis was to examine how the IT and communications industry manages the reduction in the private equity market. The second purpose was to study the importance of venture capital on new ventures in the IT and communication industry. The research questions concerns how new ventures manages their financing, how they choose financing and which method they use to pursuit it, as well as how competitors influence them and with their venture capital funding.

Method: The study was based on method triangulation with both qualitative data through interviews and quantitative data through researching annual reports.

Results and conclusions: Of the twelve researched new ventures has five gotten venture capital. The companies have chosen different financial sources and control aversion was the main cause of internal financing. This study shows that financing sources also can contact companies to invest in. The majority of businesses with venture capital has used external assistance when seeking venture capital investments. Most of the businesses have not been affected from competitors’ venture capital investments.

Understanding and Explaining Corruption: A case study of Afghanistan2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Afghanistan a country affected by decades of war and invasions has been subject of democratization and state-building of foreign donors post-2001. Despite the efforts of international community for improvements of state institutions, the country is and has been located at the bottom corruption indexes for many years. This essay tries to understand and explain why Afghanistan has been at the bottom line of corruption despite external actor’s vast democracy aid and building of effective state institutions. The case study of Afghanistan with qualitative method and descriptive text analysis examine causes of corruption in Afghanistan. The materials consist of both statistical data in terms of surveys and scientific literature to provide explanations of corruption in Afghanistan. The analytical framework of the study is based on previous research where formal institutions with focus on political system and informal institutions with focus on clientelism, patronage and neopatrimonialism, are used to explain the empirical data. The findings are that corruption is endemic in Afghanistan, occurring at all sectors of the government and the main reason is the defective political structure along with patronage and clientelistic networks and a state that rest on neo-patrimonialism.

Vad förväntas kulturen leda till?: En studie av Kulturbryggan och Postkodlotteriets kulturstiftelse2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay is to increase knowledge about how latinamerican women are potrayed in American popular films. We examine whether ther are apparent sterotypes in relation to gender, ethnicity and class. With the support of an intersectionality approach and with the use of conceptual explanations of ''latino'' represantations in films, we aim to analyze three Hollywood films over the time period of 2003 to 2011. These films are ''Chasing papi'' (2003), ''Ask the dust'' (2006) and ''Without men'' (2011). The used method to enable us to further analyze the material is a qualitative content analysis. The crucial aspect of a qualitative content analysis is to work with themes, which we have done. These themes are (1) sexual discourse (2) rasified discourse (3) class marked femeninities.  Through our analysis we have found that the latinamerican female character is stereotyped in relation to her gender, ethnicity and class in the sense that she is portrayed different and exotic in contrast to other actors in the films.

Val av K-regelverk, hur kan detta förklaras?: En kvantitativ studie som ämnar undersöka huruvida fastighetsbolags val av K-regelverk kan förklaras utifrån Institutionell Teori och Positive Accounting Theory.2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to bring out the social economic residential segregation that exists in Bredäng and in Mälarhöjden by experiences and perceptions from local residents with a qualitative research. The study will also show how these expectations forms from local residents in these districts. Both these districts take place in southern Stockholm.

Bredäng, the public housing neighborhood and Mälarhöjden, the garden neighborhood are two districts that was built up during two different eras but has a social economic difference bigger than the geographic distance. The majority of the local residents in Bredäng are low incomes and have a lack of university or college education. The majority of the local residents in Mälarhöjden have a higher percentage of university graduates and the average income per year are twice the size of Bredängs resident’s. The main focus of this study will be to inquire into why the social economic elements lead to residential segregation in these districts, but also in how Mälaräng will effect on this. The main focus will be to examine why the social economic elements leads to how segregation forms from the expectations that exist.

It generally occurs similar beliefs and perceptions from all respondents about these districts. The results shows that all respondents confirms that it exist social economic differences between Bredäng and Mälarhöjden with consequences that Bredäng becomes the segregated district towards to Mälarhöjden that is considered the “fancier” district with higher “status”.

We have used the concept segregation that is central in this study and two theoretical points, Goffman’s identity and Elias and Scotson who writes about established and outsiders. We use the theoretical perspectives to connect the empirical part about how individuals form experiences and perceptions toward to the opposite district. We also find how identity creations forms from the categories that the individual gets.

Faktorer som påverkar goodwillnedskrivningen i svenska börsnoterade bolag: En kvantitativ studie inom IT- och telekombranschen2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In order to achieve harmonization and create a conformity of accounting standards in the European countries, the European Parliament in 2002 applied IASB standards and IFRS became mandatory regulations for listed companies in the EU from January 2005. Preparation of financial statements in accordance with a common and internationally accepted regulations would facilitate investors to evaluate companies in different countries. The introduction of IFRS in 2005 has meant that goodwill and other intangible assets are no longer amortized, but instead are tested annually for impairment, in line with IAS 36. Previous research has shown that there are difficulties with the implementation of IAS 36 since IFRS has been adopted as regulations for listed companies within the EU. There are no specific rules on how companies should do when they test goodwill for impairment which provides the management greater opportunities to influence the impairment of goodwill. The purpose of this study is to identify the factors affecting goodwill impairment in Swedish listed companies in the IT- and the telecommunications industry. A quantitative method and deductive approach has been used in this study. Data collection was based on the annual reports of listed companies in the IT- and the telecommunications industry on the Stockholm Stock Exchange, NASDAQ OMX during the period 2009–2015. Studies results have shown that there is a significant positive correlation between the change of CEO and goodwill impairment. This result has shown that there is an incentive for management to act in their own interest at the accounting choices and this can give a misleading picture of the company´s financial position.

Health Effects of Overweight and Obesity in 195 Countries over 25 Years2017In: New England Journal of Medicine, ISSN 0028-4793, E-ISSN 1533-4406, Vol. 377, no 1, 13-27 p.Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

BACKGROUND Although the rising pandemic of obesity has received major attention in many countries, the effects of this attention on trends and the disease burden of obesity remain uncertain. METHODS We analyzed data from 68.5 million persons to assess the trends in the prevalence of overweight and obesity among children and adults between 1980 and 2015. Using the Global Burden of Disease study data and methods, we also quantified the burden of disease related to high body-mass index (BMI), according to age, sex, cause, and BMI in 195 countries between 1990 and 2015. RESULTS In 2015, a total of 107.7 million children and 603.7 million adults were obese. Since 1980, the prevalence of obesity has doubled in more than 70 countries and has continuously increased in most other countries. Although the prevalence of obesity among children has been lower than that among adults, the rate of increase in childhood obesity in many countries has been greater than the rate of increase in adult obesity. High BMI accounted for 4.0 million deaths globally, nearly 40% of which occurred in persons who were not obese. More than two thirds of deaths related to high BMI were due to cardiovascular disease. The disease burden related to high BMI has increased since 1990; however, the rate of this increase has been attenuated owing to decreases in underlying rates of death from cardiovascular disease. CONCLUSIONS The rapid increase in the prevalence and disease burden of elevated BMI highlights the need for continued focus on surveillance of BMI and identification, implementation, and evaluation of evidence-based interventions to address this problem. Inköpsstrategiska konkurrensfördelar: En fallstudie av H&M:s inköpsstrategi2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The globalization of trade, the rapid development of information technology and increased consumer demand has changed the competition in the fashion market. Due to the emergence of the Fast Fashion phenomenon - the fast and daily fresh fashion - the success of a fashion retailer lies in how quickly they are able to meet consumer demand; while its preferences today are instantly changing. The phenomenon has enabled the latest fashion to be available in stores within less than a month after it has been shown at international fashion shows. The consumer of today has high demands and the meaning of purchasing as a strategic competitive advantage for companies has therefore increased. To achieve this, the focus should be aimed towards a long term and effective relationship with the supplier.

There have been previous studies showing briefly how fashion companies work in relation to each other but not described in depth how their purchasing activities are formed. This aroused an interest in how fashion retailers in practice adapt their purchasing activities to the competition and its influencing factors. This thesis aims to identify the purchasing strategy of the Swedish fashion company H&M and any competitive advantages it bring, as well as underlying reasons for the strategy’s formulation. A qualitative case study based solely on critically examined secondary data has been conducted to answer these questions and to fulfil the purpose of the thesis.

Based on the findings within the study, H&M’s purchasing strategy is summarized as a self-designed model where the supplier is in focus. The company obtains competitive advantage through a strong, reduced supplier base characterized by close and long-term relationships with carefully selected partners. From these, decisions about H&M outsourcing all its manufacturing to create cost savings are made. The prominent feature of the identified purchasing strategy is the involvement of sustainability into all business parts. External factors such as the consumer’s everchanging demand and rapid development of technology affects the decisions taken and how they are implemented.

Lånefest och skuldsjuka: Framställningen av eurokrisen i Grekland och Irland i svensk opinionsjournalistik 2009-20112013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Lean Produktutveckling: När effektivitet och kreativitet möts2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

In the year 2005 it became mandatory for listed companies in the EU to apply IFRS in their consolidated financial statements. The purpose of IFRS is to create harmonization and to facilitate the comparison of financial statements between countries for investors. Previous studies have shown that the application of regulation has not been harmonized which prevents comparability and creates a significant barrier between companies in different countries. The issue of harmonization was found in, among other, the accounting of acquisitions. Acquisitions have increased with globalization of the financial markets and have been an important driving force in development. This increased importance of acquisitions has led to higher demands on the companies’ published financial information, which resulted in the new accounting standard IFRS 3. This study seeks to analyze how companies in the United Kingdom and Germany account for acquisitions and how they differ between them. It also seeks to compare the countries with previous research from Sweden, and investigate how the influence of supervision affects their accounting.

This study concludes that there are some differences in the accounting between the United Kingdom and Germany, but that these differences were not as great as perceived. Between Germany and Sweden there were significant differences despite the fact that they share the same historical accounting. The biggest discovery was that all countries relation between goodwill and intangible assets is becoming centralized. The supervision of companies is also a factor that seems to have a bigger impact in Sweden’s accounting than in Germany and the United Kingdom. The supervision does not explain the difference between Germanys and Swedens accounting.

Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The diversity of operators offering training and educational care within the Swedish school system and hence the possibility for parents and students to freely choose schools, has increased as a result of allowing private pre-schools and schools. The Government believes that competition and diversity is beneficial for the quality development and give students and parents the opportunity to choose a school. Autumn 2013 was the total number of children enrolled in kindergartens around 489 300 and 97 400 of these went to a private preschool, which is approximately 20% of the total. Reform efforts in the preschool market have a history older than 20 years, but it’s still considered to be too early to speak about concrete consequences. Statistically speaking the numbers of children in private kindergartens are few in comparison to those in municipal preschools. This despite the fact that there was a political will to increase the share since friskolereformen in 1992 and especially in the last decade. The purpose of this study is to examine and analyze the perceived conditions for the establishment and operation of independent pre-school activities in the Swedish market.

This study is based partly on studies of various policy documents and statistics that describe the development of the emerging preschool market and partly on interviews with seven persons who are or have been directors of private kindergartens in municipalities in Stockholm County during the past 20 years.

The result shows that most of those interviewed preschools feel that the conditions for running private kindergartens are inadequate and that there are obstacles for continued expansion. This view seems to be more common with preschool whose preschool managers have not previously worked in responsible positions at municipal preschools. There is also a perception that competition is distorted at the pre-school market in favor for the municipal activities. Most of those interviewed have a negative attitude towards the local government twofold role as executor, the body that approves the establishments, and runs their own preschool. There is also dissatisfaction with the decision-makers where they are considered not to have an understanding of what it means to run private preschools. It is instead considered that the municipalities should renounce the role of performer and instead be a body that is in shaping the rules.

    Abstract [en]

In 1993 the internal market within the European Union was formed and ensured free movement of goods, services, capital and people. This led to the removal of trade barriers between members of the European Union. When opening up for competition, price differences between countries decreased and more jobs were created. A single currency was introduced by eleven countries in 1999 with the goal of reducing transaction costs, eliminating exchange rate risk and to further simplify trade. In 2001 Greece joined the collaboration and introduced the euro. With a single currency, price differences are expected to decrease. The aim of this study is to investigate whether a common currency has had a significant effect on reducing price dispersion or not. Two types of convergence are tested, beta and sigma convergence. 21 different product groups are included in this study and are sorted after the speed of convergence. All of the 27 EU member states are included and divided into two groups, one euro group and one non-euro group. We also examine if differences in productivity can explain price convergence. The results indicate that the introduction of a common currency did not decrease price dispersion within the majority of product groups. For the product groups in which price convergence are evident, only one product group within the euro countries and one product group within the non-euro countries have proven to be significantly positive in terms of differences in productivity.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study is to examine how the acquisition method affects the purchasing companies’ abnormal returns in the short term, and to ascertain whether the companies’ industry affiliation has an impact on the reaction. The study applied three theories and a number of previous researches that are of significance to the study. Theories used are different forms of acquisitions, the efficient market hypothesis and the signal theory. This study was made by a quantitative and comparative approach using an event study where 64 acquisitions were observed. The acquisitions were divided into four different industries and distributed in the approaches of share- and asset acquisitions. These acquisitions have been observed during an eleven-day period, five days before to five days after publication. The collected secondary processed data has been collected from Nasdaq OMX, Google Finance and the database Zephyr. The results according to this study conveys that an acquisition of asset is preferable in comparison with the acquisition of shares, except for companies in the consumer discretionary sector as seen benefits from an acquisition of shares. It is possible to discern how the healthcare sector is the one that benefits most in the publication of an acquisition, in terms of the abnormal returns.

Housing Policy Regime in Lithuania: Towards Liberalization and Marketization2014In: GeoJournal, ISSN 0343-2521, E-ISSN 1572-9893, Vol. 79, no 4, 421-432 p.Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper reviews housing policy development in Lithuania in the light of previous literature which reinterprets Esping-Andersen’s work on welfare regimes and adopts it to study housing policy. It seeks to highlight the major features of the Lithuanian housing policy. The findings of this paper reveal that the Lithuanian housing regime exhibits many features which are common under the liberal one. Most significant of these are low de-commodification for those who have to buy or rent a home for the market price, increasing stratification based on income and the dominant position of the market in housing production, allocation and price determination. However, a detailed examination of the Lithuanian housing policy reveals that the housing policy system, despite having many features similar to the liberal one, has been operating in different social and economic settings as a result of unique historical experience of the communist housing policy (massive production of low quality apartment blocks during the communist era, which currently need substantial renovation) and consequently drastic changes in the housing field since 1990s (massive privatization of the housing stock and decentralization of the housing management system). The Lithuanian housing policy regime could be characterized as a regime with the higher owner-occupation compared to other welfare state regimes, but the lower economic power of the owners to take care of their property maintenance, repair and renovation.

This paper explores the scope, causes, flourishing, and decline of squatting in Lithuanian society during the period of 1990-2002. Drawing on 16 in-depth interviews conducted with squatters in Vilnius, newspaper articles and legal documents, this paper shows that squatters made contributions to the city with their cultural capital, creating local subcultures and making the urban space more attractive. Squatters promoted an alternative way of life, contributed to the preservation of the city and fostered counter-cultural activities. They offered spaces for performances, exhibits, and concerts. These activities are still present up to this day in the Užupis neighborhood that hosted the most long-lived squat, which in turn was transformed into Art Incubator.

    Abstract [en]

This paper reviews activities of community organizations in the post-Soviet city of Vilnius. The particular attention is paid to the reasons for mobilization of the local communities; the leadership and motivation; the reasons for non-participation; and the communication with the local authorities. The findings of this paper show that mobilizations are not taking place on the massive scale. However, they are being institutionalized and have achieved noteworthy results. Communities mobilize against illegal or unwanted constructions close to their vicinity or to defend green zones in the city. The successful movement is centered around a charismatic leader who devotes his/her time and non-material and material resources to attain results. The explanations for non-participation can be found in difficult economical conditions of the majority of the population; low level of civil society; increasing individualization and income inequalities. The findings of this paper also demonstrate that the political and institutional structure is fairly unfavorable for local activists. The community organizations are not supported by the local governmental structures in a substantial way. On the contrary, they are faced, in most of the cases, with the authority’s alienation and confrontation.

Struggle over public space: grassroots movements in Moscow and Vilnius2015In: International journal of sociology and social policy, ISSN 0144-333X, E-ISSN 1758-6720, Vol. 35, no 7-8, 565-580 p.Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to explore urban mobilisation patterns in two post-Soviet cities: Vilnius and Moscow. Both cities were subject to similar housing and urban policy during Soviet times, and they have implemented urban development using neoliberal market principles, provoking grassroots opposition from citizens to privatisation and marketisation of their housing environment and local public space. However, the differing conditions of democratic Lithuanian and authoritarian Russian public governance offer different opportunities and set different constraints for neighbourhood mobilisation. The purpose is to contrast local community mobilisations under the two regimes and highlight the differences between and similarities in the activists' repertoires of actions in two distinct political and economic urban settings. Design/methodology/approach - The paper employs qualitative methodology using data from semi-structured interviews conducted with community activists and state officials, presented using a comparative case study design. Findings - Although, citizens' mobilisations in the two cities are reactions to the neoliberalisation of housing and local public space, they take different forms. In Vilnius they are institutionalised and receive formal support from national and local authorities. Moreover, support from the EU encourages organisational development and provides material and cognitive resources for grassroots urban mobilisations. In contrast, residents' mobilisations in Moscow are informal and face fierce opposition from local authorities. However, even in an authoritarian setting, grassroots mobilisations evolve using creative strategies to circumvent institutional constraints. Originality/value - Little attention has been paid to grassroots urban mobilisations in post-Soviet cities. There is also a lack of comparative attempts to show variation in post-Soviet urban activism related to housing and local public space.

Hushållens krediter: En tidsserieanalys av svenska hushålls skuldsättning mellan 1980 och 2012, utifrån Minskys hypotes om finansiell instabilitet2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The debt level of Swedish households has increased noticeably since the 1980’s and is today at a record high level. This has given rise to questions regarding the sustainability of the debt level, its macroeconomic implications and driving factors. Previous studies on the subject show deficiencies in the standard theory for analyzing household debt, the life-cycle hypothesis, due to lack of consideration in the theory of credit restrictions and humans’ inability to act completely rationally. An alternative framework for analysis received renewed attention in connection with the financial crisis in the U.S. in 2008 – Hyman Minsky’s financial instability hypothesis – incorporating speculation in credit and asset markets as explanations for indebtness. This thesis investigates whether Minky’s hypothesis can be applied on Swedish households and explain the change in debt levels since the 1980’s, through a linear regression model, using aggregate data for the period 1980 to 2012.

The results of the thesis indicate that the increased debt level to a large extent can be explained by Minsky’s hypothesis, where a de-regulated credit market and falling interest rates seem to have caused increased speculation in real assets, increased risk-taking by both debtors and creditors and thus an increased level of household debt.

Är vi alla beroende av svart guld?: En eventstudie av reaktionen på företags avkastning vid signifikanta oljeprisförändringar2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Background: BFN started a project in 2004 in order to simplify for companies in Sweden. The project is called K-project. In the year of 2014 smaller unlisted limited companies was forced to choose between K2 and K3.

Purpose: The purpose of the study is to examine whether differences in the amortization and development costs between K2 and K3 has been crucial for the choice of regulation. The aim is also to examine who has had the biggest influence in the choice and if any problems has occurred in the implementation of the selected regulatory framework.

Conclusions: Differences in methods of depreciation and development costs has been conclusive in the choice between K2 and K3. Real estate companies wanted to avoid applying the component method and development intensive companies wanted to avoid the expensing model. The ability to be financed and continue to grow in K3 has also affected the choice of regulatory framework. Mainly auditors but also accountants has had the biggest influence in the choice of regulation, but in some cases the board has had the biggest impact. The problems that has occurred has been a consequence of the shortage in the frameworks, which is the possibility in K2 and the simplicity in K3.

"Det är kränkande men jag behöver göra det": En kvalitativ studie om personals syn på missbrukares integritet och autonomi vid LVM2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to examine in which way personnel who work with LVM approach their client’s integrity, autonomy and their participation in decision making. We used a semistructured interview when we interviewed three social workers, one placement secretary and four care personnel who work at institutions for LVM. In the theoretical approach of this study we used the total institutions and the user influence by clients. The study has shown that personnel’s considerations to their client’s integrity, autonomy and participation in decisions are a convoluted problem. Care personnel who work at institutions are the unit that has the best opportunities to consider their client’s desires.  The placement secretary has a certain possibility to consider their clients desires when determining their placement. The unit of personnel that has a significant limitation when it comes to their client’s integrity and autonomy are social workers. Since LVM is a law of constraint it’s causing an insult to the client by losing their autonomy. In this regard it is impossible to consider clients integrity.

Medierna och Syrien: En kvalitativ innehållsanalys av tre globala mediers rapportering av Syrienkonflikten.2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Men Al-Jazeeras rapportering såg dock annorlunda ut.

    Abstract [sv]

Motivation i läraryrket: En studie i vad som motiverar lågstadielärare och hur nya skolreformer påverkar deras motivation.2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This paper discusses and aims to give the reader a greater understanding of how police cadets experiencing stress in relation to their employment status and a gender perspective on male and female cadets experience different demands and expectations. As scientists, we will also study how aspirants handle stress and how they experience the benefit of the work. This is because the one who is rejected by the aspirant will lose all possibilities of becoming a police officer. The essay will primarily highlight the impact of employment status have on stress according to police cadets and how gender can affect the stress.

During the research process, the researcher will have worked through qualitative semi-structured interviews with six respondents who work as police cadets. We have analyzed our material by Karasek and Theorell of requirements, control and support model that is about the extent of demand and control individuals have the work-related aspects. We also give examples of how the requirements and control support model works for police cadets in the field with the help of research addressing the topic. The other theoretical starting point is an occupational stress research of Kelloway, Hurrel & Days (2008). Data collection shows, and supported by our theory that the form of employment is creating concerns over future work, and that perceived stress is equal for both men and women.

En studie om användandet av årsredovisningen vid bostadsrättsköp2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: Find out how and in what way buyers of housing co-operatives use the association ́s annual report in their purchase decision and investigate whether they understand it or not.

Method: The study is conducted using a qualitative method in the form of interviews. The Authors stood outside viewings and interviewed presumptive buyers of housing co-operatives in Stockholm.

Empiricism: The study was conducted on 22 respondents, all interviewed outside a total of six different viewings around Stockholm. It turned out that the majority of respondents did not fully understood annual reports and most of them asked for help. The majority of those who felt they understood the annual report also asked someone in their surroundings to help them determine the stability of the housing association's economy. The result showed that homeowners usually use the annual report to see "warning signs" that indicate that a association will raise its fees. To evaluate the association ́s economy, most of the respondents used indebtness.

Analysis: The study points out that since many homeowners did not fully understood the annual report, it could be difficult for them to make decisions based on it. This has been linked to previous research that highlighted similar problems. There are similarities between the improvement and change proposals developed by FAR together with other organizations and the results the study has shown.

Conclusion: Presumptive buyers of housing-cooperatives generally do not understand annual reports so well that they can make a financial decision based on it. At the same time, the study has shown that even those homeowners who felt they understood asked for further help and advice from their surroundings. The study's conclusions are that there is a great deal of room for changing the accounting for housing co-opratives associations to make them more

transparent and understandable to it ́s users. Furthermore, it was concluded that regardless of the individual's understanding of an annual report, he largely takes advantage of his surroundings as it is a major and comprehensive decision.

En slumpmässig vandring eller genomsnittlig återgång: Råder förutsägbarhet på Stockholmsbörsen?2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study has been conducted in order to determine the existence of predictability for the Stockholm stock exchange. With this purpose the random walk theory has been raised against the theory of mean reversion in order to determine which theory is the most substantial. Data has been collected from Nasdaq OMX Nordic and furtherly been processed using the statistical software EViews. Swedish listed companies’ daily share values between 2000-2014 have been analyzed using two tests; an Augmented Dickey Fuller test and a Variance Ratio test. The results show generally that the null hypothesis - and thus the random walk - is rejected in the short term. This means that both on an aggregated level and on an individual level, the Stockholm stock exchange is predictable in the short term - in the form of mean reversion - and that it is most evident in small cap firms.
