Does openness affect economic growth?: A panel data on developing and developed countries2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This paper investigates the impact of trade openness on economic growth through a panel analysis containing a set of 61 countries over 15 years. The method we use is the fixed effect regression model in Stata, to see whether openness to trade has explanatory power over GDP per capita growth. We use secondary data taken from World bank and Worldwide Governance Indicators. The data used is a panel data containing 61 countries and the period we are studying starts at 2002 and ends in 2016, a 15 years' time interval. Our empirical results suggest that openness during these years have had a small negative impact on growth, but although this, the variable does not seem to have a statistical significance upon per capita growth within this period of time. Therefore, with reference to this study we cannot see any significance of openness upon growth.

Behöver pensionssystemet en förändring?: En studie om investmentbolag i premiepensionssystemet2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: The purpose of this study is evaluate if there is another investment opportunity than the current investment opportunities in the Swedish pension system. In order to do this the study will produce a portfolio of a Swedishand an international investment company with a good balance between risk and return for a comparison of today’s premium pension scheme.

Methodology: The study is based on historical data for ten years which further is analyzed through the Pearson R model. The selection consists of investment companies in the Nordic- and the American market. Along with the quantitative study an interview will be made with a representative well familiar with savings and pension investments. Finally the credibility of the study and methodology criticism is presented.

Theoretical Framework: The theoretical frame of reference consists of previous theories that are relevant to produce the best-suited portfolio. Markowitz modern portfolio theory is the main theory which is supplemented by additional essential measures as the Sharpe ratio. Furthermore, a developed portfolio theory by Grubel & Solnik is applied to get an international perspective.

Result: The result consists of a presentation of the processed data as underlies the analysis being carried out.

Conclusions: The study produces a portfolio in the form of Bure Equity AB and Berkshire Hathaway. In comparison with the pre-existing pension options the study’s portfolio shows a significantly higher nominal return. The constellation of Bure Equity AB and Berkshire Hathaway exhibits a nominal return of 19,75 % in relation to the active saver in the premium pension with a nominal return of 7 %. The passive saver assigned to AP7 Safa exhibits a nominal return of 11 %.

A Narratological Approach to Literary Journalism: How an Interplay between Voice and Point of View May Create Empathy with the Other2016In: Literary Journalism Studies, ISSN 1944-897X, E-ISSN 1944-8988, Vol. 8, no 1, p. 106-139Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this essay is to present a model for analyzing the in- terplay between voice and point of view in literary journalism/reportage. The model can be used to nuance previous researchers’ discussions about “subjective” and “objective” journalism. It also problematizes the reporter’s special role as an eyewitness by highlighting how narrative techniques can create empathy with the Other and move the reader’s gaze away from the reporter, away from the one who is witnessing. Using tools from classical narratology, I focus on the form of the texts. The tools help me investigate the narrator’s as well as the characters’ subjectivity and interpret the narra- tive’s construction as an expression of a journalistic mission. I systematize variables such as the narrator’s visibility, the relation between an experienc- ing reporter and a narrating reporter, the interplay between the experienc- ing reporter and other characters in the text, and in what way a level with a director (an implied author) can facilitate a comparison between vari- ous kinds of literary journalism. I also examine whether it might be time to abandon the theory that a first-person reportage is more subjective in general than a third-person reportage. I explore whether it is instead the narrator’s visibility that determines the position of the text on a scale be- tween “subjective” and “objective” forms. (Note: I have provided a glossary of terms at the end of the essay.)

    Abstract [en]

A reportage is the reporter's story about reality. Even though it details real events, it always presentsa personal interpretation of these events. In contrast to the news article, which primarilyinforms readers, a reportage involves a pronounced degree of personal narration. Normally it is based on the reporter's role as an eyewitness. This essay discusses how the position of the eyewitness establishes narratological structures inthe text, which seem to differ from the structures present in other kinds of non-fiction narrativestold in the first person. For instance, in reading an autobiography, a reader's empathy willbe drawn toward the main character. By contrast, a reportage will direct the reader's empathyaway from the reporter and towards the other. The narratological construction of a reportage may be studied as an interplay between threeinstances: the experiencing reporter, the narrating reporter and the director (the implied reporter). Thus, a three-part model may be utilised in order to help explain, for example, how ahomodiegetic narrator can be combined with external focalisation, and how a character otherthan the experiencing reporter can be internally focalised. It can also illuminate how the textmay employ a form of dissonance between the experiencing and the narrating reporter to serve ajournalistic purpose (displacing the perspective from person – the reporter – to subject-matter).

    Abstract [en]

Aim: The aim of the study is to describe how social entrepreneurs' establishment process and then identify the challenges and factors that social entrepreneurs should take into account when establishing abroad and what resources that have been used to tackle the various challenges.

    Research questions:

    • How do social entrepreneurs establish operations abroad?
    • What factors are important to consider for social entrepreneurs when establishing abroad?
    • Witch resources can be used by social entrepreneurs to tackle the challenges that comes along when establishing abroad?

Method: This is a case study and is investigating the case with social entrepreneurs' establishment process of the non-profit organization Happier Children in Morocco. Introspective method and qualitative research strategy were used to gather the empirical material. The study is based on an inductive approach. The study's choice of respondents consists of Swedish social entrepreneurs who established an orphanage in Morocco.

Theory: The theories used in this study are Barriers during establishment abroad and Resources used during establishment abroad.

Conclusions and results: This study showed that social entrepreneurs established a business/ projects in Morocco by first having a preparatory work. The preparatory work included planning, material collection and procurement, information retrieval, administrative applications and the establishment of a new wider network. Thereafter, the social entrepreneurs established their projects in Morocco. The periods for the social entrepreneur’s establishment process of the various projects and programs varied between three months to two years. During the establishment process of Happier Children, all of the social entrepreneurs experienced various challenges. These challenges caused stress, frustration, disappointment, lack of trust and cooperation, limited information availability and constant 7 barriers. CSR, receptet för en lyckad M&A transaktion?: En kvantitativ studie om hur effekterna av företagens sociala ansvar påverkar M&A transaktioner2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine whether the awareness of social- and environmental factors could be beneficial within M&A transactions in such that companies tend to obtain a higher success in such transactions if they are aware of these factors. The study also examines whether the actual return by the event date strikes higher for the social- and environmental aware companies than the unaware companies, where the event date is when the M&A transaction was due.

Method: The authors have chosen to use two different methods; the Event Study- and Panel Study methods. The event window consists of five days before- and five days after the due date of the M&A, which makes it a total of 11 days. The estimation window is based on the 30 days before the event window and is examined in order to obtain an expected return of which is not affected by the event. The sample is based on international, Swedish companies which has undergone a M&A with a non- Swedish company, and is connected to the UN’s initiative Global Compact.

Theory: The authors have chosen to apply the Efficient Market Hypothesis and besides that, a developed model based on a current one, the Merger Management Model. The difference between the models is that the Merger Management Model is based on tangible factors whereas the developed model, Social and Environmental Merger Management Model, is based on intangible factors. The chapter starts with the Efficient Market Hypothesis and then continues with the Merger Management Model and an explanation of the social- and environmental factors. The chapter ends with an explanation of the factors’ impact on companies and culminates onto the developed model.

Conclusion: The outcome shows that companies of which are aware of social- and environmental risks, have incentives to a higher success rate in M&A transactions than companies that are unaware of these risks. The results of the hypothesis test made in this study strengthens the conclusion since the outcome of the p-value almost reached 64 percent, which means that there most likely is a correlation between the companies’ awareness of the social- and environmental factors and their success in M&A transactions.

Procedural Fairness and Political Trust Among Young People: Lessons from a panel study on Swedish High School Students2015In: Acta Politica, ISSN 0001-6810, E-ISSN 1741-1416, Vol. 50, no 3, p. 253-278Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The role of ‘fair’ institutions in developing democratic legitimacy has received increased attention. Citizens who perceive – on basis of past experiences – that they are being treated fairly by authorities have been held to have greater trust in political institutions. However, previous studies on the relationship between procedural fairness and political trust have not paid sufficient attention to individuals with limited first-hand experiences of authorities. We examine the relationship on an authority that virtually all individuals meet early in life: the school. Using structural equation modeling on unique panel data covering 1500 Swedish adolescents (ages ranging from 13 to 17), we find a reciprocal relationship: personal encounters with school authorities shape young people’s political trust; however, the images that adolescents get of the political system (through family, peers, media and so on) have also consequences on their perceptions about the authorities they encounter in their daily lives. The analysis increases our understanding of how individuals form their political allegiances by showing that the relationship between fairness and trust is more dynamic than has previously been suggested: neither an accumulated set of experiences of authorities nor formal ties with political institutions (as voters and so on) are required for a relationship to emerge.

    Abstract [en]

Title: Leadership in the creative process: A study about small computer game companies.

Problem: Currently there is a lack of studies that focus on different leadership perspectives effect on creativity within groups. There is a lack of information about how leadership shapes and the leadership’s role in the creative process, especially in creative intensive industries. A big part of previous research focuses on countries like USA and Japan, but not Sweden. The computer game industry is a fast changing industry, therefore there are many challenges and business opportunities that organizations might lack knowledge about.

Purpose: The purpose of this essay is to gain an understanding for what leadership in the creative process in small computer game companies look like. At the same time we want contribute knowledge and understanding about the leadership's influence on the creative process.

Method: The study is based on a interpretive social science perspective with a qualitative research strategy. A phenomenological approach has been used to capture the respondent's’ experience of leadership in the creative process in the computer game industry with the help of semi structured interviews. The research approach was abductive due to the researchers constantly going between data and known theories when searching after the most probable explanations. During processing of data a phenomenographic data analysis model was used.

Conclusion: Different leadership perspectives work differently under different circumstances. According to the theoretical framework leadership theories does not necessarily exclude one from another, rather aspects from different leadership theories are combinable. Since there are many kinds of computer game companies it is imperative to understand one’s own organization and to be open to pick aspects from different leadership theories to tailor a leadership perspective that fits the organization's context.

Kulturell mångfald inom företag: En fallstudie om kulturell mångfaldsarbete inom transportsektorn2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Problem: This study aims to examine the factors that influence the individual's different choice of risk level. Demographic characteristics are the underlying factors being analyzed in the study with a special emphasis on geographic factors – this in order to analyze and explain the Swedish individual’s approach to risk. Based on certified private advisers’ perspective, the study will also examine their approach to manage individuals’ risk.

Purpose: Studying the differences in risk aversion among individuals when making investment decisions, based on demographic factors and geographical areas.

Theory: The essay’s theoretical framework deals with theories covering behavioral finance, the risk appetite development in individuals at a demographic and geographic way, and an overview of previous research on the subject.

Method: We conducted a quantitative study in which 340 respondents were asked to answer a survey. We also interviewed three certified counselors from three different banks in Sweden.

Conclusions: In line with behavioral finance theory, people are not rational when making investment decisions. The study concludes that people in big cities tend to be more risk-averse than people in smaller cities. Sex is shown to be a differentiating factor with men having a higher risk-aversion than women. A higher income and level of education leads to a higher risk attitude and marital status affects the risk appetite where a married person has a higher risk appetite than a person who is single. Age and education, showed to have no relationship to the level of risk.

Does Export Diversification Boosts Economic Growth in Sub SaharanAfrica Countries?2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Growth induced export has become a major concern for policy makers to transform and upgrade the export composition to achieve economic growth objectives; in this respect, export diversification become at the heart of growth induced export narrative. Nevertheless, this study attempts to find relationship between export diversification and economic growth. To investigate this relationship, a cross-section method is used with averaged data from the period 1991 to 2009 of 41 sub Saharan Africa countries; moreover, diagnostic tests were conducted to ensure the robustness of the model. The empirical result of this study shows positive correlation between export diversification and economic growth which can be concluded that export diversification promotes economic growth.

CSR och de fyra storbankerna: En kvalitativ innehållsanalys av storbankernas CSR-kommunikation2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background and problematization: The demands of CSR have increased in both Sweden and the rest of the world. A sector which has during the 2000s increased its commitment to CSR issues is the banking industry. Banks have a great economic importance for society, but also a great importance for sustainability and social development. Banks are active in socially responsible companies and are inclined to report information about their CSR activities. Despite this, banks have not had a great attention in the field of CSR research compared to other sectors. Few studies within CSR have also been longitudinal.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to describe and analyze how the four largest Swedish banks Handelsbanken, SEB, Nordea and Swedbank have presented their CSR activities during 2000-2010.

Research question: How have the CSR activities been formed within the four largest banks in Sweden between the years 2000-2010?

Method: For this study has a qualitative content analysis of the four largest banks annual reports and sustainability reports during 2000-2010 been conducted. In the content analysis, emerging coding has been used where categories were developed after an examination of the empirical material. The content was divided into four themes: stakeholders, environment, ethics and philanthropy.

Result and conclusion: The result in this study shows that the banks have presented CSR activities in similar areas which are stakeholders, environment, ethics and philanthropy. All the banks had extended their responsibilities and had an active participation in CSR issues during 2000-2010. The differences between their CSR activities are mostly when they developed them, but in the end the banks have tended to be similar in their CSR.

Den digitala generationen: En surveyundersökning om ungdomars nyhetsvanor och förtroende för medier2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This is a quantitative survey of young people's news habits and trust in media. Our main points mainly concern how and how often young people consume news, and what confidence they have in different news sources. The result shows that half of the 126 respondents are consuming news every day. Social media is the respondents main source of news, and they think it's easiest to get news from there. At the same time, it appears that the surveyed people have low confidence in social media as a news source, compared to traditional media such as television, radio and newspapers, that only a few of the respondents use as main sources for news. We discuss how this outcome may affect journalism in the future, as the new generation of media- and news-consumers choose new media in front of traditional ones.

Styrande faktorer och aktiemarknadens påverkan på finansiering inom IT-branschen2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study has been to examine the possible relationship between patterns on the stock market and the capital structure of IT-companies. Furthermore, the study attempts to contribute a deeper understanding of the ways Chief Financial Officers (CFO) and Chief Executive Officers (CEO) handle aspects pertaining to levels of debt, solidity, the market when making investment decisions and factors that influence a company´s value. This has been done using the Market Timing Hypothesis as the main theoretical frame of reference. The study has primarily been conducted using quantitative data analysis in the form of multiple regression. Qualitative interviews have been subsequently conducted with the purpose of enhancing the statistical findings. The results from the study indicate that financial decisions largely vary depending on the situation, albeit market value being an influencing factor. Moreover, the profitability of the company and the amount of fixed assets play a role in financial decisions. The respondents further noted that the amount of equity and debt of the company does affect its value.

    Abstract [en]

Purpose: Venture Capital has been of big importance for new ventures in high technology industries, but has decreased markedly in numbers since the end of the”dot-com” bubble. The main purpose of this thesis was to examine how the IT and communications industry manages the reduction in the private equity market. The second purpose was to study the importance of venture capital on new ventures in the IT and communication industry. The research questions concerns how new ventures manages their financing, how they choose financing and which method they use to pursuit it, as well as how competitors influence them and with their venture capital funding.

Method: The study was based on method triangulation with both qualitative data through interviews and quantitative data through researching annual reports.

Results and conclusions: Of the twelve researched new ventures has five gotten venture capital. The companies have chosen different financial sources and control aversion was the main cause of internal financing. This study shows that financing sources also can contact companies to invest in. The majority of businesses with venture capital has used external assistance when seeking venture capital investments. Most of the businesses have not been affected from competitors’ venture capital investments.

Democracy Promotion in Afghanistan: The top-down or bottom-up approaches of EU or US2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Democracy promotion is a key objective in both US and EU foreign development policy. The study attempts to provide a better understanding of both actors democracy promotion in Afghanistan. The US and the EU are perceived to have different approaches regarding democracy promotion. Therefor the study examines if US used top-down and EU bottom-up approaches respective coercive and persuasive methods. Approaches used by actors are examined in the study regarding democracy promotion in the case of Afghanistan. It is a case study with qualitative text analysis and the theories used are top-down and bottom up channels of democracy, and persuasive and stick methods. The survey has looked at the both actors’ commitment in Afghanistan during period of 2001-2014. The result shows that the US and EU have more similarities than differences in the case of Afghanistan and actors have combined both top-down and bottom-approaches in promotion of democracy and focused on cooperation and partnership.

Understanding and Explaining Corruption: A case study of Afghanistan2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Afghanistan a country affected by decades of war and invasions has been subject of democratization and state-building of foreign donors post-2001. Despite the efforts of international community for improvements of state institutions, the country is and has been located at the bottom corruption indexes for many years. This essay tries to understand and explain why Afghanistan has been at the bottom line of corruption despite external actor’s vast democracy aid and building of effective state institutions. The case study of Afghanistan with qualitative method and descriptive text analysis examine causes of corruption in Afghanistan. The materials consist of both statistical data in terms of surveys and scientific literature to provide explanations of corruption in Afghanistan. The analytical framework of the study is based on previous research where formal institutions with focus on political system and informal institutions with focus on clientelism, patronage and neopatrimonialism, are used to explain the empirical data. The findings are that corruption is endemic in Afghanistan, occurring at all sectors of the government and the main reason is the defective political structure along with patronage and clientelistic networks and a state that rest on neo-patrimonialism.

Kundens kanalupplevelse: En studie om kunders upplevelse av interaktionen med detaljhandelsföretags olika kanaler2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Digital and mobile channels has dramatically changed the retailing environment. New technologies allow companies to integrate information between different channels, in order to create a seamless and personal shopping experience for its customers. This is termed omni-channel retail strategy. In previous research it is discussed that this is the only way for retail companies to survive in the new retail environment. Previous research has focused on customer attitudes and values but not on their actual behaviour. Thus, more research is required on how customers combine different channels during their buying process and how they experience the interaction.

The purpose of the thesis is to create an understanding of how the omni-channel customer experiences its interaction with retailing channels. The goal is for companies to be able to use this study to better understand their customers experiences, and thereby improve their omni-channel strategy. In order to achieve the purpose of the study, a theoretical model, S-O-U, has been designed based on the classical Stimulus-Organism-Response model, which  often is used to describe consumer behaviour. The theoretical model has been used as a basis for the study's implementation and analysis.

The study has a qualitative research strategy, and the data has been collected through focus groups. The collected data has been analysed based on the theoretical framework of the study, and the result shows that the customer uses different channels during its buying process to maximize their exchange. Furthermore, it has been found that the customer has different needs during the phases of the buying process. At the beginning of the buying process the customer is primarily driven by utilitarian values, while at the end of the buying process it is rather driven by hedonic values. The selection of channel depends on how well the channel can meet the customer's needs. Although the customer is driven by different values during the buying process, the result has clearly shown that both utilitarian and hedonic values are necessary for the customer to have a positive experience of the interaction with different channels.

Vad förväntas kulturen leda till?: En studie av Kulturbryggan och Postkodlotteriets kulturstiftelse2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

It is no longer individual companies competing against each other but rather supply chains and this assertion has been the starting point for this study. As trade becomes globalized, companies are faced with challenges about how international relations are to be managed. Companies need to make a consideration in the choice of supply strategy with decisions regarding what degree of cooperation and integration they should have with their suppliers.

This study is intended as an illustrative example of how supplier relationships and supply chains are organized in practice, with the purpose to provide in-depth understanding of how relationships in supply chains can be designed. The focus in the study lies on information exchange and integration between the parties. To investigate this, a qualitative case study has been conducted at the Swedish retail company Rusta. They act as an example to help illustrate how companies in trade-intensive sectors work with issues related to supplier relationships and global sourcing.

For the study, a framework has been designed based on previous research and theories about transaction costs, contract and control, supplier relations, information and integration. These topics have been the basis for data sample. The study is based on data collected through interviews, document examinations and one observation.

The results found show that there are many dimensions in the design of supplier relationships. Rusta has purchasing offices in Asia to be closer to its suppliers and create a more secure business environment for trade. In some cases, Rusta works in close relations with their suppliers and in others on a transactional basis. We see that Rusta shares a large amount of information with their suppliers on a daily basis. Integration is evident in various ways, yet there is no shared business system operating between Rusta and their suppliers. In conclusion, the study shows that the more complex a product is, the more complex the relationship becomes. Another conclusion is that there is no general type of relationship that suits all business transactions.

Mansjagande amazonkvinna, den självuppoffrande eller machohataren: Tre stereotyper av den latinamerikanska rollfiguren inom amerikansk populärfilm2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay is to increase knowledge about how latinamerican women are potrayed in American popular films. We examine whether ther are apparent sterotypes in relation to gender, ethnicity and class. With the support of an intersectionality approach and with the use of conceptual explanations of ''latino'' represantations in films, we aim to analyze three Hollywood films over the time period of 2003 to 2011. These films are ''Chasing papi'' (2003), ''Ask the dust'' (2006) and ''Without men'' (2011). The used method to enable us to further analyze the material is a qualitative content analysis. The crucial aspect of a qualitative content analysis is to work with themes, which we have done. These themes are (1) sexual discourse (2) rasified discourse (3) class marked femeninities.  Through our analysis we have found that the latinamerican female character is stereotyped in relation to her gender, ethnicity and class in the sense that she is portrayed different and exotic in contrast to other actors in the films.

Val av K-regelverk, hur kan detta förklaras?: En kvantitativ studie som ämnar undersöka huruvida fastighetsbolags val av K-regelverk kan förklaras utifrån Institutionell Teori och Positive Accounting Theory.2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Segmentation has long been used by companies as the main strategy to succeed in the marketplace. This method is mainly about dividing the marketplace into smaller segments, where individuals are divided according to predefined variables. These variables are based on the solid social positions of individuals, of a modern society and have been questioned by researchers who believe that this method should be reviewed. The reason is that the modern society is considered to have been replaced by the postmodern society, which is dynamic and fragmented, in which these variables are considered irrelevant. It is from this perspective that the term "Consumer tribes" was chosen to be studied in more detail in this paper. As a starting point, Bernard Cova's theory of the social link, has been used. The purpose of the study was to find out to what extent the idea of consumer tribes are present in practice. In order to investigate this, segmentation was chosen as a point of view inthe study. To carry out the survey, a deductive research effort was adopted with a qualitative method. The data has been generated from ten qualitative semi structured interviews that have been held with people who work in the subject area. The study's results show that the majority of companies are familiar with the concept of consumer tribes. Although most companies do not use the concept in those terms, the result shows that the idea is used by the companies in other terms. However, the traditional segmentation variables are most common among the companies in the survey, although someof the postmodern reasoning can be found in the result. Furthermore, it is noted that the most common way for companies to try to position themselves in the chosen customer segments is through different types of opinion shapers.

Det ligger i deras händer: En sociologisk studie om segregationen mellan Bredäng och Mälarhöjden2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to bring out the social economic residential segregation that exists in Bredäng and in Mälarhöjden by experiences and perceptions from local residents with a qualitative research. The study will also show how these expectations forms from local residents in these districts. Both these districts take place in southern Stockholm.

Bredäng, the public housing neighborhood and Mälarhöjden, the garden neighborhood are two districts that was built up during two different eras but has a social economic difference bigger than the geographic distance. The majority of the local residents in Bredäng are low incomes and have a lack of university or college education. The majority of the local residents in Mälarhöjden have a higher percentage of university graduates and the average income per year are twice the size of Bredängs resident’s. The main focus of this study will be to inquire into why the social economic elements lead to residential segregation in these districts, but also in how Mälaräng will effect on this. The main focus will be to examine why the social economic elements leads to how segregation forms from the expectations that exist.

It generally occurs similar beliefs and perceptions from all respondents about these districts. The results shows that all respondents confirms that it exist social economic differences between Bredäng and Mälarhöjden with consequences that Bredäng becomes the segregated district towards to Mälarhöjden that is considered the “fancier” district with higher “status”.

We have used the concept segregation that is central in this study and two theoretical points, Goffman’s identity and Elias and Scotson who writes about established and outsiders. We use the theoretical perspectives to connect the empirical part about how individuals form experiences and perceptions toward to the opposite district. We also find how identity creations forms from the categories that the individual gets.

Faktorer som påverkar goodwillnedskrivningen i svenska börsnoterade bolag: En kvantitativ studie inom IT- och telekombranschen2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In order to achieve harmonization and create a conformity of accounting standards in the European countries, the European Parliament in 2002 applied IASB standards and IFRS became mandatory regulations for listed companies in the EU from January 2005. Preparation of financial statements in accordance with a common and internationally accepted regulations would facilitate investors to evaluate companies in different countries. The introduction of IFRS in 2005 has meant that goodwill and other intangible assets are no longer amortized, but instead are tested annually for impairment, in line with IAS 36. Previous research has shown that there are difficulties with the implementation of IAS 36 since IFRS has been adopted as regulations for listed companies within the EU. There are no specific rules on how companies should do when they test goodwill for impairment which provides the management greater opportunities to influence the impairment of goodwill. The purpose of this study is to identify the factors affecting goodwill impairment in Swedish listed companies in the IT- and the telecommunications industry. A quantitative method and deductive approach has been used in this study. Data collection was based on the annual reports of listed companies in the IT- and the telecommunications industry on the Stockholm Stock Exchange, NASDAQ OMX during the period 2009–2015. Studies results have shown that there is a significant positive correlation between the change of CEO and goodwill impairment. This result has shown that there is an incentive for management to act in their own interest at the accounting choices and this can give a misleading picture of the company´s financial position.

Health Effects of Overweight and Obesity in 195 Countries over 25 Years2017In: New England Journal of Medicine, ISSN 0028-4793, E-ISSN 1533-4406, Vol. 377, no 1, p. 13-27Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

BACKGROUND Although the rising pandemic of obesity has received major attention in many countries, the effects of this attention on trends and the disease burden of obesity remain uncertain. METHODS We analyzed data from 68.5 million persons to assess the trends in the prevalence of overweight and obesity among children and adults between 1980 and 2015. Using the Global Burden of Disease study data and methods, we also quantified the burden of disease related to high body-mass index (BMI), according to age, sex, cause, and BMI in 195 countries between 1990 and 2015. RESULTS In 2015, a total of 107.7 million children and 603.7 million adults were obese. Since 1980, the prevalence of obesity has doubled in more than 70 countries and has continuously increased in most other countries. Although the prevalence of obesity among children has been lower than that among adults, the rate of increase in childhood obesity in many countries has been greater than the rate of increase in adult obesity. High BMI accounted for 4.0 million deaths globally, nearly 40% of which occurred in persons who were not obese. More than two thirds of deaths related to high BMI were due to cardiovascular disease. The disease burden related to high BMI has increased since 1990; however, the rate of this increase has been attenuated owing to decreases in underlying rates of death from cardiovascular disease. CONCLUSIONS The rapid increase in the prevalence and disease burden of elevated BMI highlights the need for continued focus on surveillance of BMI and identification, implementation, and evaluation of evidence-based interventions to address this problem. Inköpsstrategiska konkurrensfördelar: En fallstudie av H&M:s inköpsstrategi2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The globalization of trade, the rapid development of information technology and increased consumer demand has changed the competition in the fashion market. Due to the emergence of the Fast Fashion phenomenon - the fast and daily fresh fashion - the success of a fashion retailer lies in how quickly they are able to meet consumer demand; while its preferences today are instantly changing. The phenomenon has enabled the latest fashion to be available in stores within less than a month after it has been shown at international fashion shows. The consumer of today has high demands and the meaning of purchasing as a strategic competitive advantage for companies has therefore increased. To achieve this, the focus should be aimed towards a long term and effective relationship with the supplier.

There have been previous studies showing briefly how fashion companies work in relation to each other but not described in depth how their purchasing activities are formed. This aroused an interest in how fashion retailers in practice adapt their purchasing activities to the competition and its influencing factors. This thesis aims to identify the purchasing strategy of the Swedish fashion company H&M and any competitive advantages it bring, as well as underlying reasons for the strategy’s formulation. A qualitative case study based solely on critically examined secondary data has been conducted to answer these questions and to fulfil the purpose of the thesis.

Based on the findings within the study, H&M’s purchasing strategy is summarized as a self-designed model where the supplier is in focus. The company obtains competitive advantage through a strong, reduced supplier base characterized by close and long-term relationships with carefully selected partners. From these, decisions about H&M outsourcing all its manufacturing to create cost savings are made. The prominent feature of the identified purchasing strategy is the involvement of sustainability into all business parts. External factors such as the consumer’s everchanging demand and rapid development of technology affects the decisions taken and how they are implemented.

The Patterns of Democratic Backsliding: A systematic comparison of Hungary, Turkey and Venezuela2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This dissertation attempts to answer the research question on whether there is a common pattern of democratic backsliding. Levitsky and Ziblatt’s theoretical model of democratic backsliding is utilized as the guiding theory. The theory suggests that Democratic Backsliding has three stages where different goals are attempted to be achieved. The goals are first to take over state institutions, thereafter to use these institutions to target political opponents and protect the government from criticism. The third stage concerns entrenching the political dominance.

The research question is answered by a systematic comparison of Hungary, Turkey and Venezuela. The results are that each case does follow the suggested path of democratic backsliding, with certain differences. More emphasis is put on the media, election monitoring, and how the institutions are controlled. The institutions are often taken control over by hijacking the nomination process, a fact overlooked by the theoretical model. These aspects are not expanded on in the theoretical model, and this dissertation suggest adding these to the model.

Lånefest och skuldsjuka: Framställningen av eurokrisen i Grekland och Irland i svensk opinionsjournalistik 2009-20112013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Lean Produktutveckling: När effektivitet och kreativitet möts2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Digitalization has meant that a huge number of commercial messages reach us every day, and brands therefore have difficulties managing the fast-growing market. Traditional media agencies need to be digitized to keep up. The study aims at creating insight into how media agencies perceive that digitization has changed the ability to help their customers reach their intended target audience and thus achieve a sense of accuracy. The challenge is to navigate within the fast-growing digital market and at the same time perform accurate marketing to reach its target audience. There are more and more channels of communication and a lot of brands fighting for the same consumer's attention.

A modified AIDA-model was created with a focus on digitalization which helped the study to get a more comprehensive picture. It was also used to understand the interaction between personalization, platforms and word of mouth.

The study has a qualitative approach and five media agencies were interviewed through semi structured interviews about how they work with accuracy and digital marketing for the media agencies customers. The result showed that digitalization has helped media agencies reach the right target audience. Today you do not need to chance because you know the target audience. The target audience can be found on platforms, where data is used to help find them. It has opened the opportunity to work more confidently because you can make the choice to communicate only with your actual target audience.

When you only communicate with your target audience, the advertisement can be perceived as content because the consumer has an interest. The marketing can be recognized as accurate. After that there is a great chance that consumers converge and interact with the brand than if they have used a broad marketing campaign.

Tillämpningen av IFRS 3 i Storbritannien, Tyskland och Sverige: En undersökning av hur rörelseförvärv redovisas2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In the year 2005 it became mandatory for listed companies in the EU to apply IFRS in their consolidated financial statements. The purpose of IFRS is to create harmonization and to facilitate the comparison of financial statements between countries for investors. Previous studies have shown that the application of regulation has not been harmonized which prevents comparability and creates a significant barrier between companies in different countries. The issue of harmonization was found in, among other, the accounting of acquisitions. Acquisitions have increased with globalization of the financial markets and have been an important driving force in development. This increased importance of acquisitions has led to higher demands on the companies’ published financial information, which resulted in the new accounting standard IFRS 3. This study seeks to analyze how companies in the United Kingdom and Germany account for acquisitions and how they differ between them. It also seeks to compare the countries with previous research from Sweden, and investigate how the influence of supervision affects their accounting.

This study concludes that there are some differences in the accounting between the United Kingdom and Germany, but that these differences were not as great as perceived. Between Germany and Sweden there were significant differences despite the fact that they share the same historical accounting. The biggest discovery was that all countries relation between goodwill and intangible assets is becoming centralized. The supervision of companies is also a factor that seems to have a bigger impact in Sweden’s accounting than in Germany and the United Kingdom. The supervision does not explain the difference between Germanys and Swedens accounting.

Corporate Social Responsibility och dess påverkan på lönsamhet2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    BAKGRUND:

    Abstract [sv]

Trump’s tweet and media treat: A Critical discourse analysis of US and Pakistani newspapers2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Trump’s new year tweet about Pakistan’s role in the fight against terrorism ignited a controversy and a war of words between Pakistani officials and the US. This thesis studies newspaper coverage of both countries on this particular issue. Dawn and The News International are chosen from Pakistan and The New York Times and The Washington Post are selected from US media. The aim of this research is to analyse and compare the media discourse. Critical discourse analysis (CDA) was adopted as the most suitable choice. A sum of eight articles, comprising two from each newspaper, is analysed intensively. Outcomes of the analysis are discussed in relation to ‘framing’ and ‘agenda setting’ theories.

Five key elements from the theories are listed including: language (vocabulary), conflict presentation, sources, related issues and emphasis. Results reveal that Pakistani newspapers use very strong, rather harsh vocabulary while reporting response to Donald Trump’s tweet. The US newspapers adopted literary phrases and less harsh tone to report this issue. Conflict presentation was focused on Trump’s tweet as a central idea in all the newspapers. Pakistani newspapers focused on the coverage of reaction from military and government officials of the country. On the other hand, US newspapers included sources from both countries to have an objective view. But they have included some controversial issues, which do not have a direct link to this debate starting with Trump’s tweet.

Keywords: Twitter and news media, Trump’s tweet about Pakistan, Afghan war, CDA, Framing.

Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The diversity of operators offering training and educational care within the Swedish school system and hence the possibility for parents and students to freely choose schools, has increased as a result of allowing private pre-schools and schools. The Government believes that competition and diversity is beneficial for the quality development and give students and parents the opportunity to choose a school. Autumn 2013 was the total number of children enrolled in kindergartens around 489 300 and 97 400 of these went to a private preschool, which is approximately 20% of the total. Reform efforts in the preschool market have a history older than 20 years, but it’s still considered to be too early to speak about concrete consequences. Statistically speaking the numbers of children in private kindergartens are few in comparison to those in municipal preschools. This despite the fact that there was a political will to increase the share since friskolereformen in 1992 and especially in the last decade. The purpose of this study is to examine and analyze the perceived conditions for the establishment and operation of independent pre-school activities in the Swedish market.

This study is based partly on studies of various policy documents and statistics that describe the development of the emerging preschool market and partly on interviews with seven persons who are or have been directors of private kindergartens in municipalities in Stockholm County during the past 20 years.

The result shows that most of those interviewed preschools feel that the conditions for running private kindergartens are inadequate and that there are obstacles for continued expansion. This view seems to be more common with preschool whose preschool managers have not previously worked in responsible positions at municipal preschools. There is also a perception that competition is distorted at the pre-school market in favor for the municipal activities. Most of those interviewed have a negative attitude towards the local government twofold role as executor, the body that approves the establishments, and runs their own preschool. There is also dissatisfaction with the decision-makers where they are considered not to have an understanding of what it means to run private preschools. It is instead considered that the municipalities should renounce the role of performer and instead be a body that is in shaping the rules.

Har en gemensam valuta resulterat i en minskad prisspridning?: En jämförande studie på priskonvergens inom euroländer i förhållande till övriga EU länder2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In 1993 the internal market within the European Union was formed and ensured free movement of goods, services, capital and people. This led to the removal of trade barriers between members of the European Union. When opening up for competition, price differences between countries decreased and more jobs were created. A single currency was introduced by eleven countries in 1999 with the goal of reducing transaction costs, eliminating exchange rate risk and to further simplify trade. In 2001 Greece joined the collaboration and introduced the euro. With a single currency, price differences are expected to decrease. The aim of this study is to investigate whether a common currency has had a significant effect on reducing price dispersion or not. Two types of convergence are tested, beta and sigma convergence. 21 different product groups are included in this study and are sorted after the speed of convergence. All of the 27 EU member states are included and divided into two groups, one euro group and one non-euro group. We also examine if differences in productivity can explain price convergence. The results indicate that the introduction of a common currency did not decrease price dispersion within the majority of product groups. For the product groups in which price convergence are evident, only one product group within the euro countries and one product group within the non-euro countries have proven to be significantly positive in terms of differences in productivity.

Företagsförvärvens påverkan på aktiekursutvecklingen: En eventstudie om hur förvärvsmetoden påverkar aktiekursen2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study is to examine how the acquisition method affects the purchasing companies’ abnormal returns in the short term, and to ascertain whether the companies’ industry affiliation has an impact on the reaction. The study applied three theories and a number of previous researches that are of significance to the study. Theories used are different forms of acquisitions, the efficient market hypothesis and the signal theory. This study was made by a quantitative and comparative approach using an event study where 64 acquisitions were observed. The acquisitions were divided into four different industries and distributed in the approaches of share- and asset acquisitions. These acquisitions have been observed during an eleven-day period, five days before to five days after publication. The collected secondary processed data has been collected from Nasdaq OMX, Google Finance and the database Zephyr. The results according to this study conveys that an acquisition of asset is preferable in comparison with the acquisition of shares, except for companies in the consumer discretionary sector as seen benefits from an acquisition of shares. It is possible to discern how the healthcare sector is the one that benefits most in the publication of an acquisition, in terms of the abnormal returns.

Community Mobilizations around Housing and Local Environment: Insights into the Case of Vilnius2013In: Sociologija: Mintis ir Veiksmas, ISSN 1392-3358, E-ISSN 2335-8890, Vol. 32, no 1, p. 136-151Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper reviews activities of community organizations in the post-Soviet city of Vilnius. The particular attention is paid to the reasons for mobilization of the local communities; the leadership and motivation; the reasons for non-participation; and the communication with the local authorities. The findings of this paper show that mobilizations are not taking place on the massive scale. However, they are being institutionalized and have achieved noteworthy results. Communities mobilize against illegal or unwanted constructions close to their vicinity or to defend green zones in the city. The successful movement is centered around a charismatic leader who devotes his/her time and non-material and material resources to attain results. The explanations for non-participation can be found in difficult economical conditions of the majority of the population; low level of civil society; increasing individualization and income inequalities. The findings of this paper also demonstrate that the political and institutional structure is fairly unfavorable for local activists. The community organizations are not supported by the local governmental structures in a substantial way. On the contrary, they are faced, in most of the cases, with the authority’s alienation and confrontation.

Housing Policy Regime in Lithuania: Towards Liberalization and Marketization2014In: GeoJournal, ISSN 0343-2521, E-ISSN 1572-9893, Vol. 79, no 4, p. 421-432Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper reviews housing policy development in Lithuania in the light of previous literature which reinterprets Esping-Andersen’s work on welfare regimes and adopts it to study housing policy. It seeks to highlight the major features of the Lithuanian housing policy. The findings of this paper reveal that the Lithuanian housing regime exhibits many features which are common under the liberal one. Most significant of these are low de-commodification for those who have to buy or rent a home for the market price, increasing stratification based on income and the dominant position of the market in housing production, allocation and price determination. However, a detailed examination of the Lithuanian housing policy reveals that the housing policy system, despite having many features similar to the liberal one, has been operating in different social and economic settings as a result of unique historical experience of the communist housing policy (massive production of low quality apartment blocks during the communist era, which currently need substantial renovation) and consequently drastic changes in the housing field since 1990s (massive privatization of the housing stock and decentralization of the housing management system). The Lithuanian housing policy regime could be characterized as a regime with the higher owner-occupation compared to other welfare state regimes, but the lower economic power of the owners to take care of their property maintenance, repair and renovation.
